With music by George Gershwin, the climax of the film is “The American in Paris” ballet, a 17-minute dance featuring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The ballet scene alone cost almost half a million dollars to make.

In anticipation of An American in Paris November 22-27, these visual art students from Philadelphia High School for Girls were invited to live-sketch a Pennsylvania Ballet II dance class!

The Tony Award-winning production, An American in Paris, is a tapestry of art and dance alive on stage which was mirrored by this unique opportunity for these students.  

The production follows the story of a young soldier, who is also an artist, brought to Paris by WWII. A love story unfolds through his art, rich ballet choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, and the songs of George and Ira Gershwin.

The girls’ finished sketches will be on display at the Academy of Music during the show’s run.

Tonight we went to see an American in Paris (in Chinatown!) And I was grinning and sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was SO GOOD. Chris Wheeldon’s choreography was stellar and it was so well cast. And don’t even get me started on the Gershwin. My heart.

In honor of An American in Paris closing day, here are the two others songs I have from the French radio show back in 2014. The second song is “But Not For Me”, performed by Brandon Uranowitz and Jill Paice.

It’s a bit different than the cast recording version because Jill Paice is singing bits of “Soon” (the song that was deleted before the Broadway transfer) instead of “Shall We Dance”.
