they give me so many feelings
Madison: My boyfriend is too tall for me to kiss him on the lips. What should I do?
Hamilton: Punch him in the stomach, then, when he doubles over in pain, kiss him.
Laurens: Tackle him.
Burr: Dump him.
Mulligan: Kick him in the shin.

In French, we don’t say “ninety nine”, we say “quatre vingt dix neuf” which roughly translates to “I’ve never heard of a functional numeric system before” and I think that’s beautiful

<INTP Rant>
(I am gonna use the collective we, but that doesn’t mean I represent all INTPs)
I am so sick of INTPs being portrayed as cold. Someone can be a warm loving person and be an INTP, it is just not always immediately visible. The dominant function of introverted thinking, makes us very cerebral and we may not always be present in a room of people. This isn’t an intentional coldness on our part, it is just how we interpret and make sense of the world around us. Small talk and social gatherings that are large may make us seem even more cold, because frankly other people’s social lives and small talk aren’t something that a lot of INTPs are competent in and for an INTP to be enthusiastic and engaged they need to feel competent. An underdeveloped INTP is even more stereotypically withdrawn in situations where they don’t feel like they can contribute. They may have spent their youth collecting facts and using these as ways to integrate themselves into social activities. This, however, can backfire and make the INTP the target of ridicule because of their awkwardness and lack of social skills. As we age we may tend more toward quietly observing or being very reserved with what we say. We protect ourselves with our silence and the appearance of a flat emotionless affect.
This changes once you know us though, once you connect with us and we get into a conversation about a special interest, we will light up. We like ideas and philosophical conversations, our interest in who fucked who or what Felicia did to make you say bye, is limited. If you want to engage an INTP, try and talk about some interesting fact you learned or about an idea you have had. We want to connect with people, it is just really difficult to do so when you feel incompetent 99 percent of the time. As you get to know us, you will realize it isn’t that we are cold or mean, it is that we want to know you on a deeper level than what would be considered appropriate for first meetings or small talk. Also, once you get us on something we feel competent in, you will have a hard time getting us to shut the hell up.
If you want to get to know an INTP and see all their good attributes you will have to put effort into the friendship and you may not see that same level of effort from the INTP at first. We tend to be guarded and a little bit dense about the process of making friends. You will have to make an effort to be in our lives because we won’t know what you want, and because we tend to use Ne to collect information, it may take us a while to harmonize you into our systems and make you a part of our life.
Once you become a friend or you know us well enough you will find we have many good traits that are hidden behind our “cold” exterior. We are unbelievably loyal and work really hard to make sure every one feels included when we are in groups. We will be the ones who try to bring someone into the conversation. We are also incredibly open minded and will try to accept others as they are, which can make us seem indecisive at times. We also tend to be exceptionally honest, which can be both good and bad, we may say things that were better left unsaid and we may have to learn to develop a filter specific to your needs. We care about your feelings and we don’t want to hurt them. We can be really enthusiastic and this makes us excellent pep talkers. If you want a pep talk just find your INTP. We also sometimes go off on abstract tangents which can be either irritating or really entertaining depending on how you approach this odd quirk. We are also good to have around in chaos as we have a general stability and rationality that allow us to assess and work through chaotic and emergency situations without panic. Oh and we love puns and are super punny.
So if you think of an INTP as cold, then I am guessing you have never befriended one. Our cold exterior is only half of the picture and momma always says “don’t judge a book by the cover!” So do me a favor when you are trying to type a person or television character, don’t assume they aren’t an INTP because they show qualities of caring and loyalty. We aren’t the robots we appear to be, we are emotional and loving and we make excellent friends if you care to make the effort…
