“i don’t know if i should feel flattered or offended when i’m addressed as ‘your highness’. it’s nice to know that i could pass as a princess but at the same time i feel a bit unimportant when they can’t get my title right. thee should just use my name, smaller risk of getting it wrong.”

“Is it really that big of a deal? This is a huge place with people from all over the world, people who are most likely occupied with matters that concern their own existence. I would only get offended if they keep getting it wrong after you’ve corrected them several times. Folks are rarely bothered to pronounce my name right, so, well, I wouldn’t be too worried.”

“That’s a good thing. I’m not sophisticated enough to know the difference between really expensive and dirt cheap wine, so me drinking something super fancy would be terrible waste,” she explained. “Which is why I usually buy the cheapest stuff I can find. Just makes sense, really.”

“Ah, fair enough. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before, so you could’ve just pretended it was all your doing. I would’ve been none the wiser.” Amira let out a short, somewhat stifled burst of laughter before shaking the man’s hand. “No, I don’t think so. Amira.”

“yes well, i think he misses speaking his mother tongue and it’s always fun to learn a new language.” lis grinned as she fiddled with her pen, she wasn’t bothered if the accent never came, it was knowing the language that mattered. “all good suggestions, but the accent is hard enough to come by when i’m also trying to understand mandarin. hurts my head just a little.”

“That is understandable. Sometimes it is difficult to express everything you feel in a foreign language,” she agreed, momentarily lost in her own thoughts. “Of course. Mandarin is... very challenging. There’s so much you need to take into consideration. Otherwise you might risk making a complete fool of yourself.”

“you – are a true godsend,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair as he gladly accepted the coffee. he pushed away the papers as he took a sip of the coffee. “i guess i could use a break, too,” he chuckled, shaking his head. he was never truly off duty, living among the people he was dedicated to protect. “never thought retiring from the marines would’ve been actually more stressful.”

“It’s the reason why I was put on this earth. Someone needs to make sure everyone’s properly caffeinated,” she joked and yawned softly behind her hands. Life had certainly become busy, even for her, and she didn’t have to worry about the safety of all these powerful and ludicrously rich people. “Hmm. Must be very stressful,” Amira agreed, “I don’t think I could bring myself to do your job. In fact, I know I couldn’t.”

    “I’d love to hear how one of those frankenlanguages sounds.” Alek said with a laugh. “I mean, i can relate to that -and ill admit I've done it maybe once or twice on purpose for curiosity’s sake- but i’ve had the trouble before when I’m speaking in one language and accidentally switch to another one, or use a word from the other language. Thankfully it was nothing i couldn't laugh off with the people i was talking to.”

“I am sure you will have the utmost pleasure to do just that if you spend any considerable amount of time around me,” she promised, shaking her head. “That’s absolutely normal, mixing up different languages when you speak more than one. What I find interesting is the way people’s personality tends to change a little bit depending on the languages they’re using. I certainly present myself in a slightly different way when I use Arabic on a day-to-day basis. Have you noticed anything like that?”

“A really only ken the basics of some languages, like how to say hello, thank you, how much for a pint. The important stuff.” He chuckled, he had always meant to sit down and try and become fluent in at least one language but he never got round to it. 

“I mean, being able to order a pint in a foreign language is one of the more important things you can learn. I have no idea why so many language teachers start with something like where’s the train station when you are probably going to ask that once in your entire life,” Amira pointed out with a roll of her dark eyes.

“Goodness,” Amira nearly gasped as she shook her head slowly. “That sounds terribly stressful. However, I am sure you have been trained ever since you were very young.” She looked around, incredibly glad she didn’t have to worry about such things. “It’s still very useful. It’s much easier to connect with people when you have a few languages you can try and use in a conversation.”

“well my boyf- bodyguard, my bodyguard,” elisabet coughed as she stumbled on her words, hoping the other wouldn’t notice her slip up. “he’s from italy originally and he keeps picking on me when i try and speak italian to him because i don’t have the accent for it. it’s really only for fun though, i like to stick to english or swedish for simplicity’s sake.”

Amira nodded slowly, entirely unwilling to mention the slip up. After all, it wasn’t her place to question or get smart about it. “Ah, I see. You’re learning, that’s what matters,” she spoke, smiling briefly. “The accent will come eventually, usually with practise and being around people who speak the language. Or, well, you could listen to Italian music or watch television if you really wanted to show him.”

“listen — i don’t really have time for talking. unless you have something important to tell me, that is. then i’m all ears,” he sighed as he sat in the common area, poring over files and documents. not that he was the most talkative guy to start with, anyways. he’d been flooded with so many incident reports of young royals sneaking out that his head was spinning. the little spoiled brats were better than he thought, and if he didn’t find a solution soon, his head would be up on the chopping block. 

“You tell me. Is coffee important to you? I just made some and figured you could use it.” Amira tilted her head to the side, waiting for a response. She had no interest in adding to the poor man’s stress levels, so she simply sat down quietly and crossed her legs, eyes already scanning the room as if looking for some sort of entertainment.

Amira tapped a pencil against the table in front of her, her eyes fixed on the pile of papers she had been going through just minutes ago. “Sometimes,” she began almost absentmindedly, “well, sometimes you just end up using the wrong accent when speaking a certain language. Or, better yet, you combine two accents and create a whole new frankenlanguage. It’s horrendous, really.” Finally, she looked up and smiled somewhat sheepishly. “Sorry about that. Anyway, thoughts on the matter?”

Amira tried her best to remain neutral and appear as professional as she possibly could, but her face was having none of that. Instead, the corners of her mouth began to twitch quite traitorously. “That is very, um, creative. Your Grace.”
