1000s of students are asking now, Is college worth it? My take on, Should you go to college?
The cost of education has increased by 1000% in the last 22 to 25 years. In this scenario, Do you have this question in your mind? Is college worth it?
Today we have these four challenges.
1. Is it worth wasting, your money, your time and your energy in getting a college degree?
You know that the cost of education is increased to crazy proportions. Whereas the salaries have remained stable for most of the jobs during the same period. Then is it worth spending all the money to get a college degree?
Moreover, it takes a lot of time and energy to get a degree. You can probably learn everything taught in college within 1/4th the time. Then why do you need to spend so much time and energy in getting a college degree?
2. Is it worth getting a degree from a college with low standards of education?
This is a very common trend when the quantity of anything increases the quality decreases. Maybe there are about 20% colleges out there that are recognized in the world. The rest 80% of colleges are only churning out a number of graduates.
The problem is not that the jobs are less, the problem is that there are no adequate graduates to take up those jobs.
So, how can we justify completing college from a substandard college?
3. Can we replace college education with online courses available on Pluralsight or Udacity?
In the last decade or so, many online platforms have mushroomed all over the internet. You can learn almost anything and everything you want just sitting at your home if you have a Laptop or a Mobile and a good internet connection.
In this scenario, Do we still need to go to college? Why can’t we just sit at home and study only the things we love?
4. Whether you can get a job or become a freelancer by just doing software programming courses on PluralSight or Udacity and Why does the software industry respect the degree more than the online courses?
With all the learning platforms available is it possible to just use these platforms and get a job.
Even better is to start freelancing or become an entrepreneur.
But as far as the trends of the industry go they have not stopped taking engineers. The industry is still far away from accepting people who just learn to programme on their own. Why is the industry not changing?
These are some of the questions in the minds of thousands of students who are either in the process of applying for college or they are already students who made their decision to get a degree few months or years back.
