when I think about bucky barnes and what happened to him, I gotta lay down for a few minutes. because what the fuck do you mean he was captured, experimented on, freed, captured again, tortured, brainwashed, tortured even more, and then finally freed after decades of doing things he never decided for himself? and somehow he survived it all. and now he can smile again and laugh and cry and experience love and give love in return and make good choices, bad choices, any choice whatsoever. because, despite all the odds, he made it.

The chiming of the cafe door bell pulls you out of your thoughts and in no time Bucky's seated in front of you.
That was quick, but your brain had been too much into panic mode to make sense of how much time had passed, you weren't doing it intentionally but you had been just blankly staring off into space, you still were doing it until Bucky arrived.
He noticed that too as he sat down.
"Kid...kiddo, hey, look at me" He spoke gently. When you didn't respond, he lightly tapped the table in front of you.
You looked at him, your eyes were red from crying and your face was a bit flushed. "I'm so sorry but please...just- just-" You stumbled on your words, and he just looked at you with a patient expression on his face, he gently prompted you to speak.
"just?"
You sniffled, "I can't do it...please, please don't make me...please!!" You melted into sobs again, crying softly.
"Hey kiddo, hey, hey" He got up and gently kneeled down in front of your chair and took your hands in his, squeezing them in order to reassure you that he was there.
he spoke cautiously, "kid...i know that you don't want to, i know" he sighed gently before continuing, "i'll come with you, okay? How does that sound?"
You sniffled, as you thought for a moment. Him coming with you sounded better than you going all alone.
"i have no choice...do i?" you spoke in a low voice, already knowing the answer.
"i wish we could just not go, but you know that the appointment has been due for months, we can't stall it anymore kiddo" He said in a gentle but firm voice.
"okay" you whispered reluctantly.
He sat with you in the cafe for a bit to give you time to cool off, before you two made your way to the dentist. You both sat in the waiting area for a short while, Bucky had been holding your hand firmly all the time to reassure you that it would be alright. Suddenly your name was called and it was time for the inevitable. He gave your hand a reassuring squeeze before you both entered the doctor's office.
As soon as you entered and saw the surroundings, you froze in fear. Bucky looked down at you to see you so scared, he didn't understand why until he saw the surroundings and it clicked in his brain, the chairs...the dentist's chairs...they had a striking similarity to the ones that hydra had used to brainwash and torture you both...
You tried turning back and walking away but he caught you before you could.
"kid, i know what you're thinking...but you're not there anymore, we're not there anymore...we're at the dentist" He spoke with urgency as he saw your panicked expression.
"no please...please" you pleaded as you tried tugging your hand away from his hold, but he held firmly. The doctor was yet to arrive and the nurses present there seemed confused that a kid this old was still scared of the dentist. One of the nurse made you sit on the eerily familiar chair and asked you both to wait for the doctor to arrive.
You averted your gaze from him as he sat on a small stool beside you. Bucky noticed how you didn't make eye contact with him and how your bottom lip quivered ever so slightly.
Bucky spoke up.."kid"
no response from you
"hey kiddo?"
still no response from you.
"ki-"
"NO" you cut him off suddenly, you tried acting brave and defensive but your voice came out small and shaking. Bucky was taken aback by your sudden outburst, but he was concerned, nonetheless.
You were on the verge of tears, you were trying really hard not to cry.
"Kid...you can cry its okay, no one will judge you for it" he spoke softly
"im not crying" you spoke defensively.
Bucky sighed sadly. "Look i know you're scared...i can imagine whats going through your head right now, but trust me, you're safe kid, you're not there anymore, we're not there anymore. Nothing or no one around you is a threat. And even if you think something bad is gonna happen, trust me, you got me by your side, always."
You looked at the floor and sniffled as you heard him speak ever so gently. You knew that it was just a dentist's office but your brain was running a thousand miles per second, thinking of every bad possibility, thinking that someone was gonna come in and torture you now.
As if on cue, the dentist entered the office and greeted you. You stopped breathing for a second, sensing him as a threat until Bucky held onto your forearm and lightly rubbed his thumb over your skin to soothe you.
The dentist and nurses did all the arrangements and stuff, talking about general things, you were mostly zoned out while Bucky did the talking.
You were brought back to reality when the chair started moving upwards slightly and then made you lean back. Your breathing quickened as Bucky whispered "you're safe" and repeated it like a mantra beside you, hoping it'll at least do something.
It didn't. You were breathing heavily but the doctor had already started looking into your mouth and checking things.
You couldn't help it as tears spilled from your eyes after the anaesthetic injection was given, Bucky just sat beside your, gently stroking your forearm with his thumb, he wanted to talk you through it but he didn't wanna disturb the doctor and the nurses.

Bucky couldn't deny it, you were taking it like a champ. You were being so brave despite the situation and he felt both proud and sad at the same time, seeing you now.
He kept his hold on your forearm until the procedure ended, and then the dentist got up and left, giving you care instructions. You still sat on the chair, zoned out. Bucky nudged you slightly and gestured to the waiting room outside, he helped you stand up and made you sit on the couch in the waiting area while he handled the fees and the other instructions that were given.
You just sat there, feeling numb, literally, and shaken to the core. You didn't say anything, didn't cry again, didn't scream. This was highly suspicious and it made Bucky concerned.
"icecream?" Bucky asked, looking down at you with a worried gaze. You shook your head. You never denied icecream so Bucky was seriously concerned.
"the doctor said the cold will help with the healing, c'mon"
He gently pulled you up and you both made your way outside to his car. He opened the passenger side door and nudged you to sit inside. You shook your head and feebly pointed to the back seat door.
"that's okay too, you can lay down in the backseat and rest kiddo" He spoke softly as he got you seated into the back seat. After he began driving, you slumped down against the seat, hiding yourself from his gaze behind the seat. He tried doing small talk to divert your mind but you didn't participate much. You were so zoned out that you didn't realize when you both reached the icecream place and a cup of chocolate icecream was handed to you by Bucky.
He cautiously handed you the cup, after ensuring that you won't drop it, then came and sat beside you on the back seat from the other side. You noticed that he had taken strawberry icecream for himself, which was not likely of him, you knew he liked simple vanilla the best.
Bucky saw you gazing at his cup in his hand, "i wanted to try something different...wanna taste?"
You shook your head and you both sat in silence for a while. Bucky had finished his icecream while you still hadn't touched yours. It melted inside the cup. He gently took the cup of melted icecream from your hand and placed it somewhere it won't spill, then cautiously put an arm around your trembling form and pulled you closer.
He didn't say anything, nor did he force you to speak up. You leaned against his side as he pulled you closer, you hid your face against his shoulder and didn't even realise how many emotions you were holding in until the tears started flowing silently. The silent sobs turned into louder ones, then you were wailing like a little child, you felt so scared, you felt so much that you didn't even know how to express.
He just sat with you on the backseat and let you cry it out as he soothingly rubbed your shoulder.
You didn't know how much time had passed, you both sat there for a while until your loud wails turned into little hiccups. You didn't realise when he had completely enveloped you in both his arms, one on your back, rubbing small circles while the other gently rested on the nape of your neck.
You again didn't realise when you fell asleep like that. He gently manoeuvred you to lay down and drove you back home.
A few hours later you woke up in your bed, gingerly tucked in with your favourite blanket. The nightlight was left on, and the room felt comfortably silent.
You found a little sticky note with Bucky's handwriting on it, it read 'Hey kiddo, i hope you slept well, I'm outside to buy you some medicines and some other things of mine. There's milkshake in the fridge if you feel up to it. If not, then we'll sort something out for you when i get back, rest well champ.'
You kept the sticky note back with a small smile as you pulled your blanket up higher and tried resting again.
