Jihye didn't understand his words at first. They reached her one by one, yet none of them seemed real, swallowed by the lingering warmth of his hands against her face and the ghost of the kiss he'd almost given her. His fingertips still rested so gently along her jaw, as though they were afraid to hurt her, while her lips continued to tingle from where his had only barely grazed them; close enough to promise everything, only to steal it away in the next breath. We can't do this anymore. The words echoed through the little treehouse until they became the only thing she could hear. The smile lingering on her lips unraveled, replaced by quiet disbelief as her eyes searched every inch of his face, desperately waiting for the familiar spark of mischief that always betrayed one of his jokes. " w-what are you saying? " she breathed, a nervous laugh slipping past trembling lips as she shook her head. " don't joke like this... it's not funny. " The laugh died almost as quickly as it came. There was no teasing grin waiting for her, no playful apology; only sorrow. The color slowly drained from her face as the truth settled like a stone in her chest, her lips parting soundlessly before a broken whisper finally escaped. " ...no. "
Her trembling hands rose instinctively, covering the ones still cradling her cheeks before curling around them as though she could stop him from pulling away if she just held on tightly enough. Her thumbs brushed across his knuckles in slow, desperate strokes, memorizing their warmth while tears gathered along her lashes until the world before her blurred. " no... don't say that," she whispered, her voice splintering under the weight of it. "not after everything... not after all this time together. " when he spoke about his business, about the danger that surrounded him, grief twisted painfully beneath her ribs. She shook her head through uneven breaths, refusing to accept the distance he was trying to force between them. " who cares if your business isn't safe? " she asked, emotion cracking through every word, tears filling her eyes. " didn't we promise we'd stay by each other's side no matter what happened?"
She lowered his hands into hers but never let go, her fingers tightening around them with quiet desperation, as if loosening her grip would mean losing him altogether. Tears streamed unchecked down her cheeks, each one falling faster than she could wipe away. " you don't get to decide this for me," she managed between shaky breaths, her voice small but unwavering. " i don't need your protection... i can protect myself. " Her hand briefly lifted to tap against her own chest, a fragile attempt to reassure him, before finding his again without hesitation. The moment her tear-filled eyes met his, the last of the composure she'd been clinging to crumbled completely. Her lower lip trembled, another sob escaping as she searched his face for anything, anything, that might tell her he'd change his mind. " so... please, " she pleaded, barely able to force the words past the tightness in her throat. " please don't say that again..." Her grip tightened one last time, as though her hands alone could anchor him beside her. "...don't leave me."
grief worked through cycles and every stage showcased itself across her face, scenes from a grotesque film reel: the sharp disbelief, the search for humor, the rocking devastation, and the abrupt stop at denial. he kept his lips tightened into a line as she spoke, a rejection, a plea, an ardent statement, another plea. his eyes traced the lines of her face, memorizing how each one deepened, stretched, twisting around the heartbreak that she refused to claim as her own even as it cracked through her voice.
" i care, " he choked, words overlapping hers ⎯
and for a minute, that was all it was: speaking over each other, dovetailing, a messy etude of discordant harmonies, notes falling off the sheet:
" don't say who cares, that's all ⎯ that is all i care about, jihye. you're all i care about. " buried under her words, shot through them, an argument that defied timing, communication ran thin with desperation. " i'm ⎯ i know you can protect yourself, i know, but ⎯ isn't it my choice, too? don't i ⎯ " her words at their end, his an empty beat of air behind. " ⎯ get to choose how i lose you? " silence. his hands in hers, hers in his. he couldn't tell anymore. he held one, she held the other. a fight, even in that. even with tears in his eyes and lungs threatening to drown or dry out. " isn't that my choice? "
and then, as with any shared piece, there was a response. her response, tearstained and hurt but strong, even now. through the holes in the walls of the dilapidated treehouse, the world existed and peeked in on them. a car horn blaring down the street. someone's music offensively loud a few houses over. a cluster of children biking down the block, meaningless chatter that must have held the weight of the world at their age. and inside, within the cupped hands of a treehouse they found and adopted, yukhei exhaled. his forehead pressed against hers, inhaling as if he could hold her breath in his lungs and keep her safe that way. as if there were any other options than the decrescendo they were already facing. " i would marry you. do you know that? if you'd ever wanted ⎯ if i'd ever asked ⎯ " his voice cracked at the end. fracture imminent, a demolition of self. " but you know that's not in the cards. you always knew that, jihye, don't tell me you didn't. "

"I think you're right," Jihye murmured, her gaze drifting toward the view for only a fleeting moment before returning to him with a fond smile. " It is nicer... but i still liked it better before ." a quiet laugh slipped past her lips as she stepped closer, absentmindedly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. " This place is special to me. We had our first date here, after all. " Closing the remaining distance, she gently slipped one arm around his waist, her shoulder brushing his as she leaned into his side with effortless familiarity. Resting her cheek against him, she smiled to herself before tilting her head up to meet his eyes. " but i think the view's overrated anyway, " she teased softly, a big grin wearing her face. "I'd rather look at you." The joke should've earned the smile she knew by heart but instead she found herself studying his face. His lips curved upward, but something behind them felt... wrong. It wasn't the first time she'd noticed it, either. for weeks now, he'd seemed quieter, more distant, as though there was something he couldn't bring himself to say. The warmth in her own smile slowly faded. "... hey. " Her hand slid from around his waist to gently squeeze his arm, her brows knitting with quiet concern. "You've been acting different for a while now." Her voice softened, a hint of worrisome hid underneath it. " Is everything okay? " She searched his eyes, unwilling to look away. "You know you don't have to pretend with me... right?"
the walls of his throat closed in around empty space, denying him air ⎯ denying him the chance to say a word and pry the bricks from his own foundation. it was... a lot. the knit of her brows, the cup of her palm against his elbow, the way her voice melted down into something softer, something he could hold in his palm without breaking. as if it'd scare him less; as if this could ever be any easier. he tried to swallow his nerves but it just sent tears to his eyes. he dropped his gaze from hers, letting it skate the bridge of her nose, the divot of her upper lip, the centimeter of skin where her gloss ran just out of place, smudged from the intentional collision of lips in the car ⎯ or maybe the one before they got in the car, or the one when he first greeted her, or one of the pecks he'd stolen at stoplights, intersections, in front of that café they frequented just to giggle every time the barista spelled his name wrong and stammered out an apology.
his hands came to cradle her jaw without him thinking twice about it, head tipping down to erase the distance between his mouth and hers, fingertips warm with the prayer that one more kiss, one more bid for time, would readjust the hands of fate. he'd been a man starved desperate all day and now his reckoning sat between the palms of his hands and he was all out of bids. his lips moved to capture hers, but only succeeded in grazing them. intentional miscalculations, a dying rebuttal against a decision he'd already made.
'' we can't do this anymore. '' the words ached. he'd hated them in the silence of his head and he hated them all the more in the silence of the treehouse that'd become theirs. but they'd already tainted the air and there was no way to escape hell but to continue through it. '' my... business. it isn't getting any safer, and i don't want to bring you any more trouble. i can't do this with you anymore, jihye. ''

✿ @bearytender .
she shouldn't be surprised to find him standing at the door when she opens it; as if he hasn't proven himself to be as shakable as a skin graft and attentive as a brain tumor. initial reaction to seeing him is the purse of her lips, hand bracing against the doorpost as some half-conceptualized line of defense against the persuasive crooning that's made her forgive in the past in spite of every ardently-sworn promise not to do so. eventually, she sighs, posture slacking only a little. she steps outside, the door cracked behind her. '' why are you here? it's nearly one in the morning. ''
in today's paper, eri finds oliver on her porch late at night. she appears to be tired, hopeful, & conflicted. & now for the weather.

revamp done. back to starters.
'' it's nice in here, isn't it? almost looks better than the last time i brought you here. '' stalling for time ⎯ a lame attempt at it, words beckoning nothing that can't be adequately collapsed into a hum, noncommittal and dismissive. he knows it too; it's in his eyes when he turns around to the eyes he's so used to drowning in and in his smile when he lets it spread. '' c'mere. view's better over here. ''
in today's paper, yukhei steals his lover away for a dreaded conversation. he appears to be mournful, nostalgic, & troubled. & now for the weather.
