Congratulations on your promotion/raise. I am very proud of your accomplishments. Also your courage to pursue your prospects in the Bay Area. Although I have difficulty appreciating the whimsical magic of urban life, I admire your determination to seek out new experiences. It is turning into a classic "rags to riches" story. Just finished my Frog Creek project between storms. Another big storm at our house overnight with lots of rain. Much of Meadowbrook Golf course is under water from the club house to the creek. Bike path by McDonald's is under several feet of fast moving water.
“Congrats” email, Dad
Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening. We may feel hostile or angry or weepy and hysterical, or we may feel depressed. It would never occur to us, unless we stumbled on a book or a person who explained to us, that we were in fact in the process of change, of actually becoming larger, spiritually, than we were before. Whenever we grow, we tend to feel it, as a young seed must feel the weight and inertia of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way to becoming a plant. Often the feeling is anything but pleasant. But what is most unpleasant is the not knowing what is happening. Those long periods when something inside ourselves seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods we wait for, for it is in those periods that we realize that we are being prepared for the next phase of our life and that, in all probability, a new level of the personality is about to be revealed.

"...I hope you have a good week and keep your head above water and maybe even dolphin jump out of the water, even if just for a moment, and see the horizon keeps going, just as the waves do."

i miss you. i feel a little lonely but too vulnerable to reach out to flesh-and-blood friends here, so this email to you, my old and dear distant friend, is the next-best way for me to feel like i'm close to people. being 'close but still far' is the way i've been wired to feel safe, and moments like this one are when i'm sadly aware of that the most.
how are you? three unrelated thoughts on my mind:
i've been having strange dreams lately. for the past few years, all my dreams were about water but now everything is dry in them, and they're about kittens and cats and other little furry things like baby bunnies. i'm busy in real life (3 jobs) and my dreams keep me busy at night too.
my brother and his wife moved here a few weeks ago (yours moved to LA recently too right? funny parallel!). my brother's hair is greying around his temples. i use him as my mirror for many things, so that means i've aged too but i'm not sure where or how to look to find it.
i need to write more.
xo,

She is free in her wildness, she is a wanderess, a drop of free water. She knows nothing of borders and cares nothing for rules or customs. ‘Time’ for her isn’t something to fight against. Her life flows clean, with passion, like fresh water.
This is exactly the sort of vague but inspiring tumblr wisdom I needed tonight.

I read your poem last night, quickly. Then I read it again, slowly. But something about the words you chose and my poor attention span worked to quicken the slow, and I ended up not reading it at all. So I tried again, just one more time, and instead of gaining any comprehension, I got a visual of someone like Pocahontas (but smaller, rounder, younger), whose eyes were painted with thick white raccoon stripes (from the feathered arrows), and then I imagined that the wilderness you mentioned in the poem was actually the area at the corners of my eyes that are beginning to show the roots of trees. Suddenly I was the smaller, rounder, younger Pocahontas. I imagined how cool the paint must have felt on my face as the arrows made their pass, and I imagined how itchy it must have been as it cracked when I smiled. And what it would feel like to take one of those warm blades of grass and pick away the cold flakes of paint. I remember wanting to type out a response to you really quickly last night but I didn't. I did but I didn't. Tonight I wanted to write about not writing it to you. But also, I wanted to write about that strange feeling I get when I'm depressed - the feeling that there's an observer inside of me who notices another part of me - one that's grayscale, faded, silent, lying prone, pressed down flat against a white marble pedestal in an empty mausoleum. Who is she? What would she say if she could find the breath to speak? Who is that outsideinside observer? Who's the part of me it's watching? And how did I so quickly become your Pocahontas?
From
The corners of eyes came into my mind but I didn't say them in that poem, I thought that poem was dumb and generic after I reread it and I just hope we can be honest, I mean who cares? I'm terrified of not being authentic but letting it show scares me. The outside observer is one of the tenants of existentialism, and in the most recent episode of radio lab, it's the feeling of looking through a keyhole at someone and then realizing someone is watching you, it's getting caught being alive. For me I'm worried, I have had such burning connections, but right now I'm retreating, I feel alone but don't respond when people reach out, what is that? It's like I want to foster this isolation, a subterfuge for refuge. I want to throw the world away and try to chase it from me, to see if it comes in some other way, some memory. I keep thinking about Pocahontas and Neil Young, I keep thinking I would love a girl paddling softly in a wooden canoe across a cold lake in some forever morning. I appreciate the part of you pressed against cold marble, I think that is beautiful.
To J
The sliding. Yes. I feel it too, so it makes sense that you’d reach out across my distance via text a few days ago (and via email yesterday). I guess I keep waiting to have an actual substantive response for you that sounds more thoughtful than “thank you for being open and honest” or “I’m glad you had these thoughts” or “Welcome back to reality — it’s probably less awesome here than it was in whatever fantasyland I happened to catch you living in.” But that thoughtfulness hasn’t registered yet, or I haven’t been able to interpret it at least. And so Distance stays and grows and possibly becomes a third wheel to our relationship much like Debt has decided to tag along for the rest of my life. Always there. Just something to be worked around.
Suddenly this feels very creative writing class-y. But I’ve been in a funk of my own.
I have lost count of the number of men who have looked me in the eye and said, “Amy, being with you is… refreshing! I’ve never met anyone like you. You make me feel [alive] [different] [young] [stuff!] when I didn’t even remember I could do that.” (That was a lie. There have been four.) But although they were looking straight at me, I was not in their gaze when they spoke. They were looking at me and not seeing me. I essentially didn’t exist for them in these excited moments, instead what they were responding to was some forgotten part of themselves they had stumbled fresh upon because of me. (Maybe because I was looking through them straight into this part, searching for that freshness, that openness, that youth. I’m not saying this has all been a one-sided type of treachery.) Anyway, when I’m pushed out of the relationship in this way - when I realize my lover is falling for a reflection of themselves rather than me, I then insist on actually entering the room. This insistence has often taken the form of my telling a personal story which inevitably contradicts the mental model of my lover’s projection of me - who they expect and assume - passionately - that I am. Who they want me to be, for them. Once I tell the story I spring sharply back into focus - the me me, the real me, the actual me - and inevitably, my lover leaves me. I’m abandoned. The very moment they were confronted with Me instead of the symbol they had created out of me, which served them, that is the very moment they left me behind. Quite painfully, usually suddenly.
This still feels very creative writing class-y. I just have a lot of thoughts and I don’t know quite where to put them. I acknowledge the distance and can claim it as mostly my own doing in reaction to some of the unrealitied things you owned in your textblock.
Are we still doing coffee tomorrow? I can meet at 9 but I have to start driving around 10. We feel very rollercoastery to me, but I imagine that seeing each other and being human together will help to even some of that out.

I align myself with people who support my growth. If you meet someone whose soul is not aligned with yours, send them love and move along.

"The feeling of desire is the soul's longing to move forward."
Eastern Body Western Mind, by Anodea Judith
"I am in love with the world. ..It is a blessing to get old. It is a blessing to find the time, to do the things, to read the books, to listen to the music. ..I cry a lot because I miss people. I cry a lot because they die and I can't stop them. They leave me. And I love them more. ..Oh god, there are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die. But I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready.

When my Dad was 28, he spent $30 on business cards to advertise the opening of the archaeological research firm that he continues to run singlehandedly to this day. His business paid for my private primary schooling, french camp, biology camp, piano lessons, trumpet lessons, gymnastics and tap dance classes I totally sucked at, sweaters I hated and dresses I loved, arm casts, braces, the fees for my club soccer league, tuition at a private liberal arts college, my first through fourth cars, a semester wandering around the history and culture of western Europe, selected segments of my post-graduation malaise, and everything in between.
Tonight I made rice with milk and raisins the same way he used to, and then I designed and printed my own first round of business cards. If my therapy practice is anywhere near as successful as his business is, then I can't wait for my own kids to explore the richness of themselves and the world the way I could growing up.
