for anybody who wants to learn some history of gender nonconformity (including transness) from across time and through different cultures, i recommend "before we were trans" by kit heyam. i think it does a really good job of showing how as long as there have been culturally constructed genders, there have been people who don't fit into those and how they lived their lives, as well as sharing stories of people from cultures who had more diverse gender experiences than we do today and what their genders meant in the context of their cultures. i double extra super recommend it if you have ever heard phrases like "terf ideology is white supremacist colonial violence" and have been confused by what that means :3

À travesti é oferecida a masculinidade por toda a sua vida: violenta, abrasiva, sem direito à emoção e à beleza. A masculinidade pune a travesti durante seu percurso por performar feminilidade.

A travesti lésbica rejeita a masculinidade duas vezes, a primeira no seu ser e a segunda no seu afeto, e de duas formas se reapropria da sua feminilidade. A feminilidade dela liberta ela dos sofrimentos e das agressões da masculinidade. A feminilidade do seu afeto a faz insubmissa, independentemente, igual.

Eu sou lésbica femme. A minha feminilidade é forte, confiante, questionadora, ativa. Isso é parte do meu gênero. Eu sou travesti. Eu não quero ser mulher. E não teria nada de errado com quem é, mas a minha feminilidade é outra.
