An Awkward Enby

Hello, I’m just an awkward enby with crippling anxiety!

So... I wasn't originally planning to have Slakko age, like, at all. But designing him as an adult for the Fallout AU kind of made me start thinking about what a future AU would look like for him, and that made me realize that he would be one of those kids who's so much happier once he hits his late teens. I figured he deserves to finally get to grow up and be happy.

By the time he's 20, Slakko is in his third year of college, where he's studying engineering (mostly mechanical and computer) with a minor in chemistry. He's going to college at your stereotypical northeastern technical institute, and though Wakko didn't get into it, he's going to a nearby university. They still live together, because of course they do, and they share their apartment with Wakko's best friend, Felix, and Slakko's best friend, Victor (not the cowboy robot, different guy). It should go without saying that chaos ensues.

Obviously, Yakko isn't super enthused with having two of his younger siblings living literally across the country from him, but he's acting as supportive as he possibly can. Every time he calls to check in, though, there's always something in there like, "I completely believe in you, but just know you can always come back home if you want, there are plenty of great schools right here in L.A." This gets to the point that Slakko starts to always answer the phone with, "No, Yakko, I'm not moving back to L.A." He has to apologize to a lot of receptionists calling to confirm appointments. Naturally, about a week before fall break every year, Slakko has a breakdown and calls Yakko in tears saying it's too hard and he wants to come home. Dot usually overhears this and tells him to pull himself up by his bootstraps and get back to it because he knows that this is what he really wants to do.

I'm thinking he also spends his spare time working on various indie games as a freelancer, making music, playing video games and D&D, writing Star Trek TNG fanfic, and "winning" arguments online with edited Wikipedia articles (he thinks it's funny... look, he's better, but he's not perfect). Over the summers, he works as IT at the studio.

Design-wise, Slakko's hair changes because he destroyed his bangs dying them red for decades. Who could tell why he went with the mullet. He's also a lot more casual in his emo looks because, let's be honest, he doesn't want to put that level of effort in for an 8 a.m. class. I gave him a Mojave Express bag in honor of the fact that the New Vegas AU is the reason this storyline exists at all. That's also his favorite game now as one more homage to it.

Full disclosure, I was fully planning to participate in this trend with my actual Courier Six OC, not my Animaniacs OC whom I've tossed into New Vegas because he doesn't have enough problems already, but breaking through art block can make ya do crazy stuff. I feel like Slakko with no emo fringe is vaguely cursed, but he's going for the cowboy look here, so no fringe bangs for you, emo boy.

Normally I'd put the full artwork under the cut, but according to Procreate, I spent five and a half hours on this, so it's not happening this time. I had no idea I knew how to do this kind of painterly shading and lighting (I nearly always use some form of cel shading), so I'm admittedly pretty proud of myself. I did kind of struggle to figure out how to paint the lighting on his black fur, but I don't think it's half bad for a first attempt. The usual rambling and character explanations are under the cut.
