you must understand that I post first and foremost for my own amusement; the idea that anyone reads what I write here is always a secondary thought. I am just here to scream into the void in a place where I can be around other people
socioeconomic class plays into the things you consider familiar from your childhood: the working poor in the '80s and '90s grew up with aesthetics of the '60s and '70s because we were house poor: everything was secondhand (not quality or old enough to be considered "vintage"), no one ever had new fixtures or decor, everything was handed down and thrifted and cheap.
in the houses of my family, it all bore a yellow tinge and the odor of cigarette smoke.

eating rice, there's definitely an upper limit to how much you can eat, but thinking about it in abstract? when filling a plate? it's hard to conceive of it. that's what makes it so dangerous

I'm trying to fall back in love with movies by actually watching ones I haven't seen and not just having them on while I do shit on my phone or around the house.
tonight's movie was Love Jones (1997) and when I tell you it's a damn near perfect movie—
it is so beautifully shot and lit on top of a slam dunk storyline. I think I was in love with both larenz tate and nia long by the end. this movie is only making my romanticization of chicago worse. what a love story.

I've been in therapy for >20 years because of How My Dad Was when I was growing up and like 3 years ago we were in the car and he casually—as though it had just occurred to him that morning while brushing his teeth—offered "I think maybe I had pretty bad anxiety and depression when you were growing up and it probably affected you."
I was at such a complete loss for words I burst out laughing and startled the hell out of him. we haven't spoken about it since. lol

years ago, roxane gay wrote an essay about how everything everyone says does not always apply to you (it was basically the bean soup thing but based on her own experience as someone with a following who Says Things Online) and I think—maybe without even realizing it at the time—that the phenomenon she bemoaned in that essay was a harbinger of this exact kind of illiteracy that seems to be the dominant mode of processing information on the internet now
