Hello! I am a new fan (I've had Thief since February, but I never got to play it until now), but I realized that I'm not very good with the lore. I'm afraid Wikia isn't very clear, either. I had a few questions (only if you wouldn't mind answering them): What is the Summersday Eve Festival? What does it mean when a document says something like Nr3030 for example? And does the game only take place at night or did the Gloom make the world dark? Thank you so much! <3

Hello anon! I am very sorry for this late response. As you can see from the previous posts…I have not been doing well. I’d love to answer your questions, but instead I will refer you to some great taffers who have thoroughly analyzed Thief and would likely give a far better answer to all your questions than I could at the moment. Sorry you aren’t feeling well, but I am always happy to answer questions about Thief. 

The Summersday Eve Festival takes place very close to the summer equinox so we can theorize that it’s a festival of the official beginning of summer since there are no official mainstream religions in the City at present (Thief Companion App: Religion).

The dating on the documents tells you who was ruling at the time it was written. Anything with NRy refers to the rule of the Northcrest family. Elias Northcrest is the 10th of his family to rule the City as Baron as has been the case for 200 years since the fall of House Marlham. 800 years prior Lord Laurence of House Black established the new calendar and started the rule of the Barons. The ruling houses have been Black, Flevanter, Eydark, Marlham and Northcrest. (Thief Companion App: A Brief History, The Present Day, The Government). So a document dated 6 24 NRy842 is the current year June 24th.

The game takes place almost exclusively at night. The Gloom is the manifestation of Erin’s contamination of the Primal and affects people’s mental state, thankfully not the weather. ^_^

if i remember correctly (and i should probably point out that my memory is terrible, but i have played the game a ridiculous amount of times) it does get pointed out by some NPCs that it’s an unusual cold and rainy summer, so erin might have something to do with the weather after all. or it could be coincidence.

the strings are lazy but also the same. like u can tell a lot of the ppl w/ the stringed instruments may already basically know how to play stringed instruments. like there’s definitely a section at the beginning where you hear a good portion going “oh yeah this is like. a smaller/bigger version of what i do.”

all you hear of any woodwinds is just “pffffttt??? pFFFTTTT???? PFFFFFTTTT I SAID PFFFFTTTT!!!!!” bc woodwinds are fucking HARD and you hear after like the first crescendo half of them just give up. they give up. they’re done. fuck this it tastes weird and my lips hurt.

that trumpet. that person is fucking TRYING man they fucking GOT this. they may not have figured out notes but they figured out LOUD and they GOT this.

tbh i dont get why most people assume that robots are always cold

like have u felt a laptop while its working? its kinda not exactly cold yo

tbh any piece of machinery thats working hard to function is usually not cold, the only time its ever cold is when its turned off

so id like to think while a robot is awake and functioning they could have the potential to be as warm as a human being :0
