I'm Anas Basil, a recent high school graduate with dreams of pursuing a degree in e-business management and building a career. However, due to my family's financial hardships, I enrolled at Khan Younis Training College (KYTC), affiliated with UNRWA. Sadly, the war has turned the college, once a beacon of hope and education, into a shelter for displaced families, stripping it of its educational purpose.

I completed high school with a 93% average, filled with excitement about continuing my education and securing a job to support my family. But like so many others, the war has shattered those dreams.

My younger brother, Ahmad, is 14 years old and currently in the third grade of preparatory school. We’ve always called him "Doctor of the Future" because of his intelligence and natural talent in mathematics. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing war, he has been deprived of schooling for the second consecutive year. In addition to his academic abilities, Ahmad has a passion for football and used to win tournaments.

Our Life in Displacement: The war forced our family to flee to Rafah, where we lived in a tent for several months. Each day, my brother and I would wake up to fetch water, gather wood, and light a fire to prepare food. Survival became our daily task, but we never gave up hope. The conflict affected us deeply, but it did not extinguish our dreams of education and a better future.

Today, my mom went to buy some basic cooking essentials—a liter of corn oil and one onion. These are items we need just to prepare food for our family. But here in Gaza, the prices are beyond belief. The oil cost $15, even though it used to be just $2, and the onion (yes, the one in the picture) was $3.

This is the reality we’re living in. The cost of living here has skyrocketed, making it nearly impossible for families like mine to afford basic necessities. With no job opportunities, destruction all around us, and ongoing hardships, it feels like survival itself has become a luxury.

Thanks to your donations, my mom was able to buy these items and a few others to cook for us today. Your support means everything to us. It helps us hold on to a sense of dignity and keeps us going.

Hello, friends. I’m Anas, writing from Gaza. I wanted to ask a fun question about breakfast, since I know for many of you it’s a comforting and energizing part of your day. For us here, though, breakfast—or any meal, really—has become an unimaginable luxury.

With the borders closed, there’s barely any food coming into Gaza. Even simple items like fresh vegetables, fruit, and bread have become hard to find or too expensive to afford. These days, a typical breakfast might be a little bit of za’atar (a thyme and sesame spice mix) or salt with bread, and even these basics are running low.

I’m sharing this not just to talk about food but to help others understand our reality. My brother Ahmad and I have dreams—of learning, of helping our family, and of living in peace. But here, where we can’t even rely on the next meal, those dreams feel so distant. That’s why we’ve started a campaign to raise funds, hoping for a way out to continue our education and build a future we can look forward to. Education is something that matters a lot to Anas Basil (@anasbasilgaza), but now he has neither safety, nor the opportunity to continue his education. Anas is a recent high school graduate who dreams of studying e-business management. Yet due to his family's financial struggles, he could not study at university and instead enrolled at the UNRWA affiliated Khan Younis Training College. He still aimed to do his best in College. However, this genocidal war meant that his studies came to a halt and his college has instead been turned into a shelter for displaced families.

There is no safe place in Gaza. Even Anas's College has been bombed, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. Anas and his younger brother Ahmad are currently living in a tent in Rafah. Survival is difficult, not only because of the frequent bombings, but also because of the soaring prices of basic necessities like food and medicine. This is especially hard since his family is already struggling financially before the war. 14-year-old Ahmad dreams of becoming a "Doctor of the Future," but he hasn’t been able to attend school for two consecutive years due to the ongoing war.
