her parents married for love but obviously love, alone, isn’t enough to make a family stay together  !  however since image was everything to them, they stayed together despite the obvious differences that began to form a more than hostile environment in their household  –   it also didn’t help that her brother isn’t her father’s kid  –  and that created even more animosity in the house as asali began to see how different her father treated her in comparison to jelani.  however,  this made her need/want to protect her brother more even if it meant standing up to the big bad man she called dad

but her father relented  ( at times ) because he loved asali and so begins her role as the mediator of the family

her relationship w her dad has been rocky since then since she doesn’t approve of the way he treats jelani but she still somewhat cares / acknowledges him because he’s never treated her outwardly 

other than that she loves her mom and jelani to bits  (  out of everyone she knows,  these are the 2 she’ll ever really be Soft for  )

her mom is her literal role model

while jelani can do no wrong in her eyes,  for her,  as long as he tries or attempts,  she’s like  “oh my god, you’re amazing, JUST AMAZING.”

yes,  she’s biased.  does she care? lmfao no.

&   ASALI TIME   .

even if her father didn’t want to conform to the pressure of his family, he had no problem pushing those same expectations on little asali

at the age of 4, she started at an international boarding school ( haven’t decided which so hmu for boarding school blues! ) and from then it was always about being the best, getting the best grades, going to the best schools, wining the best awards, and undoubtedly going to the best universities and becoming the Best of the Best

not that asali truly minded, she liked the push, and she liked the thrill of winning things, but it did give her an unhealthy ( read: pretentious )  ego boost  /  aka she’s unhealthily competitive 

her father had gotten into an ivy league school,  so obviously asali got in with flying colors

unlike her father who lacked the ambition, asali had that in spades, after her bachelor’s, she got her master’s and immediately began training under her mother to take up more responsibility as crown princess

while others who cracked under pressure, asali flourished under it

however unlike her parents’ love story for the ages, the fall out of such a star-crossed romance only made her jaded, her love life, however filled, left her distant and at arm’s reach  –  you never really knew asali except for what she let you know, you never really understood her except for what she wanted you to understand about her

and if you caught her slipping, no you didn’t

the same goes with her platonic relationships, girlie burns bridges as fast as they are no longer needed. once your purpose was up, so was that relationship (select few were the exception to this) !

#UnbotheredPrincess, she’s not afraid to speak her mind and will call you out on your stupid

because of her home environment, she got really good at picking up non-verbal cues  ;  the slightest ripple of an expression or tick.  while she hates to sugar coat things, she does know how to do it and will do it if it will meet a certain means to an end

currently,  shopping for business deals in order to develop tanzania

“ PRINCESS. ” he did not like the slight tenseness in his shoulders. “ i heard you’ve been pretty busy here. wouldn’t have expected any less from you. ”

          her smile is bright,   full of warmth and familiarity.     “   a necessary venture when expected aids had unexpectedly gone,   but that’s been taken care of for a while now   --   nothing you need to worry over anymore.   ”     every darling sparkle of a tooth pristine also carried a bite that couldn’t quite stay hidden,   perhaps there was reason when okeyo had to remind her to play nice.     “   but enough about me,   have you been enjoying spain ?   unfortunate that you missed the bull run,   i’m sure you would have loved it.   ”

“ WON’T YOU TAKE A DAY OFF FROM WORK to celebrate my birthday with me this weekend ?   i’m dreading turning thirty-three as it is. i’m so old. do you know if haera is in town ? ”    @asvli​

          “   i’d hardly call thirty-three old.   ”     what  was so wrong with getting older ?     “   but    alright,   i can make an evening for you   --   a whole day is sorely out of the question,    though.   ”

he leans forward,  arms against his thighs, clasping his hands together as if pleading to asali.  “ everything we have planned is still going to happen  —  the drc and south africa have to be dealt with first. ”  he knows much of an inconvenience this is to her.  asali doesn’t have nearly as much patience.  he leans back into his seat.  “ we have to trust our family.  they’re doing what’s best for us. ”  he nods,  listening intently.  second chances are hardly given out by asali,  she’s too prideful.  “ nah,  don’t worry.  there’s no way he’ll risk professionalism and stand you up again.  and if it does happen again…  who’s to say he hasn’t done this to others?  a rumour like this can be influential in the right places. ”  he shrugs,  not too worried.  

          her gaze turns to steel,     “   is the south not taken care of what with  —   ”     her hand flips about as if to conjure up the name of their nonessential cousin.     “   this is what happens when we trust outside of our family.   ”     she still believed only their immediate could be trusted,   anyone spanning to the third or fourth branch was a liability waiting to happen.     “   fine,   if it must be done,   so be it.   ”     her shoulders pull themselves back as she finally drops her hand from her brow as she reaches for her phone to message her assistant.   “  just this once.   i’ll set up a meeting.   ”

“Princess Asali.” He gives her a polite nod, not that it’ll do much, Alek expects Asali has a list of insults ready to shoot at him. It’s funny, knowing his mere presence is enough to rile her up. “I recall you were unhappy in Regina, I take it this is better suited to your tastes?”

          “   mm,   ”     her hum signals her acknowledgement   --   but if only mere acknowledgement were enough because he continues to keep talking.     “   slight,   but anything is better than dreary regina.     i see the bulls haven’t impaled you yet,   how unfortunate.   ”

“ if we haven’t found this someone else,  it means there is no one else. ”  the only possible someone else would be asali’s ex,  the vice president of namibia.  however,  he’s not nearly as important or relevant as uriah.  “ think about it this way,  there’s no competition here.  it won’t take a lot of ass kissing for him to want to work with us.  i know we can both agree minenhle zulu is not a threat.  she’s the most useless zulu representative next to reggie. ”

          “   look harder.   ”     it wasn’t entirely impossible to make someone essential yet disposable,   surely okeyo has done more with much less.   asali makes a face,   okeyo is nothing but coercive with his words   --   as unwilling as she is,   he has made his point.   as annoying as it is,   she knows he is right.   she presses a hand to her temple.     “   minenhle zulu is not who i am worried about.   uriah on the other hand   ;   poses no guarantee that he will work with us,   not kindly,    anyways,   if he thinks there’s nothing to gain.   what do you have in mind to persuade him ?   ”     apparently tanzania’s treasury had little appeal to the nation of drc.

“ he’s more than necessary. ”  he wishes he wasn’t.  he wishes there had been someone easy to manipulate and easier to sweet talk.  “ c’mon,  asali.  he’ll see it as flattery knowing you still want to work with him after all the shit that happened.  we don’t need his loyalty.  all we need is what’s in the congo.  auntie — your mom,  told me to tell you to play nice — so try to play nice,  alright? ”

     she rolls her neck,   feeling the tension pull the muscles there tight.     “  i’ve been playing nice,   practically kissing his ass at this point.   ”     her gaze deters from her cousin’s persuasive prose.     “   there must be someone else,   i’d feel more convinced with a guaranteed means.   ”     who knew when uriah would fuck them over again.

          “   no.   are we sure he’s even necessary   --   his loyalty may be as unreliable as his word.   ”

“ I THINK YOU’RE THE ONLY ONE I KNOW with that kind of visceral reaction to the bouquet, ”   she can only laugh, twirling it around in her hands. but ana didn’t catch it, so it seems wrong.   “ i think there’s somebody here who needs it more than you and i. ”   with a snort, she sets it on a nearby table. 

          “   one wrong engagement is enough to warrant any reaction to the idea of nuptials,   ”     asali had been a fool once,   never again.     “   i will give no one expectations for a wedding unless i desire it as so.   ”     there were far more important things to consider than a measly marriage.

          “   consider me inimical to the idea.   ”     asali wasn’t a superstitious person but she’d rather not take such ambiguous chances.     “   surely,   it would do better in your hands.   another wedding to add to your family tree.   ”

          a brow skyrockets high,   unsurprised and unimpressed.     “     almost like child’s play,   is it ?   when your country believes you to be doing your utmost best for them,   you’re here   ....   playing house.   ”     no wonder europe was a shit show.
