When Wolfgang was about to set off on a tour of France, his father was suddenly overwhelmed with so much work that he could no longer accompany his son. Postponing the trip was not an option: the arrangements had already been made, and too much time had been lost. Wolfgang then persuaded Leopold to let his mother travel with him instead, as at seventeen he still required a parent to accompany him. After long hesitation, they reached a reluctant agreement, and Mozart left for France together with Anna Maria.

During the journey, she contracted viral pneumonia. The illness progressed far too rapidly, and she had little chance to receive proper treatment or recover, as they were forced to move constantly from one city to another, following the tight schedule of the tour. No one expected it to end so quickly…

After her death, Leopold was forced to go into debt in order to bring his wife’s body back home and give her a proper burial.
