History repeats itself

EDIT: ludwig deutsch <3
Look at those fucking details!!! Look how he makes the light bounce off of the skin, the eyes not pure white but reflecting the colors. Each and every FUCKING CHAIN is painted and highlighted. The folding of the fabric aaaaaaaaaaa

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without infringing copyright! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.
Please add on if you know any more sites for free images <3
Thanks for the information!!
I will reblog this everytime i see it
Ok so while we’re at this, I just checked out Unsplash, and it’s an AMAZING site for free images?

Some fiction book recs . . . . . . Puh-lease.
HI so these are basically books I've read this year and rly liked and there's like a lot of genres so u can pick <3
Margaret the First, Danielle Dutton: This is such a gorgeous gem of a novel. It's a dramatized account of the life of Margaret Cavendish, a 17th century duchess who wrote utopian science fiction and feminist plays and essays. The prose is so beautiful and it's only 160 pages so you can read it in one sitting.
The Broken Earth Series (The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky), N. K. Jemisin: It's set in an alternate Earth called the stillness where near extinction events called the 'fifth seasons' wreck destruction every hundred years or so. I can't talk much about the characters without spoiling the story but the world building is fantastic and unlike any other fantasy series I've read before! It needs a few chapters to get used to but after that it gets pretty interesting.
Tokyo Ueno Station, Miri Yu tr. Morgan Giles: A short (and sad) novel about a deceased homeless man whose spirit lingers in the Ueno Park. He recounts his life and how he ended up at the park and there's also the history of the park itself and snippets of it's visitors. The translation is very clear and elegant and I especially loved the ending.
The Luminous Dead, Caitlin Starling: Found it from this post! It's abt a caver on a foreign planet on an expedition with only a woman in her ear to guide her. It's so creepy at places and the suspense is great you really can't put this book down and also it's super gay.
The Empress of Salt and Fortune, Nhgi Vo: A travelling cleric meets an elderly woman named Rabbit, who recounts the story of the empress In-yo who Rabbit served as a handmaiden. It's tightly written, a little over a hundred pages and it's so beautiful you can't really put it into words you just have to read it.
Disappearing Earth, Julia Phillips: Follows a small community set in the remote siberian peninsula of kamchatka as they deal with the abduction of a two young girls. It has a dozen narratives by a dozen women in the community over the span of a year and it feels jarring at first but slowly you find out how all of them are connected. I usually don't like multiple POVs but this was done so well and the whole book was so atmospheric the last few chapters left such an ache in my heart.
Annihilation, Jeff Vandermeer: This actually is the first of a trilogy but it was fine to read on it's own. The prose is so stunning. I honestly couldn't put it down and was up till 2 am reading it does a good job of keeping up the tension.
The Green Bone Saga (Jade City, Jade Wars), Fonda Lee: Set in a world where jade confers great power and strength to those who can wield it. There's a lot going on in the plot but it's never confusing. The world building is great, and the books overall are very atmospheric. Probably one of my favourite series.
Sword of Kaigen, M. L. Wang: Listen I keep pressing this book into everyone's hands and all the people I've rec'd it to have absolutely loved it. It's exceedingly well written with a lot of empathy you don't really see in fantasy novels. Trust me and just read it.
Severance, Ling Ma: Sort of a post apocalyptic story that goes back and forth in time between a woman living after a most of the population has been wiped out by a strange fever and her life leading up to it. I read this back in Jan and honestly think about this book atleast once a week especially with the current climate which is eeriely similar to the book's plot.
The Poppy War Series, R. F. Kuang: This is definitely my favourite series of all time. Follows Rin, a peasant girl who gets into the most elite military academy in Nikan and discovers her shamanic powers. There's a lot more that happens and it deals with very heavy themes abt war and it's consequences but it's very well written!
A Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, Xiaolu Guo: A Chinese woman arrives in London, and soon moves in with her English boyfriend. She doesn't speak English very well so decides to write her own Chinese-English dictionary. It's pretty charming and at times melancholic + I really loved the atmosphere in this book.
Territory of Light, Yuko Tsushima tr.Geraldine Harcourt: Twelve stand alone fragments about a newly single mother living alone in Tokyo with her daughter. This is the type of book where there isn't much happening plot wise and it's very spare and quiet and the focus is more on the experiences and the atmosphere. It's one of my favs from all the books I've read this year! The way it's interspersed with light is so achingly beautiful and I've been searching for such luminous books ever since.
Tips For Writing Small Towns
The Everybody Knows Everybody
Usually false. If you lived in a town of 300 people, you might know of everybody, but it’s unlikely you would know each and every person’s individual bask story, job, and family life. As the number goes up, the less likely it is that everybody knows everybody.
Everyone is racist
In my state the more rural you go the more conservative it gets, but it certainly doesn’t mean that everyone who lives in a small town is racist. When a small town has a higher population than the surrounding area, including tourists/seasonal activity, those towns tend to be more ‘accepting.’ Towns along coasts (sea towns, port towns, whatever you want to call them) also tend to be less conservative, as they usually get a larger number of tourists.
Everyone loves/hates living in a small town
In books and movies small town characters often either love living in a small town or hate it. In real life it’s more complicated. Give you characters complicated relationships with their small town life.
Schools
I’m so sick and tired of seeing small towns in movies with huge high schools. Most small towns don’t even have their own high school or even middle school, usually it’s combined with nearby towns. (That also depends on how far apart the residents are spread out.) If it’s a combined-town school then yes, there will be a good number of students.
Economy?
Before I answer this question I’ll split small towns into two groups:
Tourist/seasonal towns, business towns, commuter towns, and low population towns.
Tourist/seasonal towns
Have a low number of full time residents
Are by the ocean, mountains, national park or something else that would draw visitors
Have an ‘off’ season where tourists don’t visit as much
Are considered vacation places
There’s a wide range, but if you take in the seasonals to count middle-upper class
Business Towns
Towns that people live in because of their career
Such as college towns, mill towns, and factory towns
When businesses fail these towns will plummet into poverty
Are mostly lower middle class
Commuter Towns
Commuter towns are towns located by highways or larger towns (such as port towns and other business towns)
These towns are different than suburbs because they are not close enough to a large city
Are mostly middle class, there will be residents who commute to larger towns for jobs such as lawyers and doctors
Low population towns
The stereotypical small town
Often located in “the middle of nowhere”
Can either be spread out or very close together
Are found in rural parts of states
Are mostly lower middle class
Of course, every small town is different! My experience comes from New England small towns, but feel free to add on to this post!
No one is coming back for you.
MAG 165 - “What did you say?”
I’m two weeks late after the party but I had to put it on paper! That went a big graphic.
Just a compilation of what I’ve learned over the years! (ignore my horrendous handwriting)
And for a more in depth look at things, here’s some links to tutorials I’ve come across:
my art reference page (lots of things for artists)
realistic coloring tutorial
two coloring techniques
this speedpaint taught me how to do realistic fur
another speedpaint i like
line art tutorial (keep in mind you have to play around with settings if you’re using a different program than in this video)
getting lines smooth in Paint Tool SAI (the stabilizer…..i don’t know if there is something like this in other programs)
create a color palett with this tool
downloads for photoshop and SAI
shading techniques
more color tips
Hope this helps!
To celebrate a follower milestone on ig and also so I don’t have to keep a million references open whenever I draw these characters, I’ve made semi-model sheets on all of them, including their general build, face shape, expressions, and fashion styles.
Another comment I’ll make is that Julian and Lucio have quite similar faces, but Lucio is very sharp while Julian’s rounded out.
Each character tends to have a reoccuring line shape throughout their design:
Asra - Semicircles/curves
Nadia - Straight vs flowing lines
Julian - Loose waves
Muriel - Blocky or jagged
Portia - Bubbly waves
Lucio - Sharp and spiky
I hope this can be useful :D
