OKAY BUT here’s the thing: the years that harriet spends saying no? they’re not wasted. she could not say yes before. she could not say yes if it meant being… subsumed into peter, being made a part of him and losing her own Self. and that is what it would have been, even though she cared for him.
he walks such a narrow line with his proposals. making sure she knows the offer still stands, and making it so easy for her to say no. it becomes almost a game between them, but only almost, because it is always in deadly earnest.
and by the time she says yes… she knows herself, and she knows him, and he knows her. down to the depths of their souls.

-ne is an interrogative clitic that doesn’t presuppose any kind of answer! My Latin Composition prof actually used Peter’s proposals to illustrate the difference between nulle, num, and -ne questions.
So the difference, I understand (for those of us who didn’t take Latin Composition and, separately, may or may not struggle with the number of times and ways in which Peter Wimsey doesn’t take no for an answer), is something like this:
You’ll marry me, won’t you? (nulle)
You won’t marry me, will you? (num)
Will you marry me? (ne)

Personal work inspired by greatest writer ever aka Ursula K. Le Guin's short story Winter's King. You can find it in The Wind's Twelve Quarters, it's set in the same world as The Left Hand of Darkness and it's... well, brilliant, like pretty much all her writing.

And then, as she often does, proceeds to break your heart.
At first, I wanted to make 3-4 illustrations for this story, but found a way to put all scenes into a single piece. And I believe that actually works better, given the cyclic nature of the story.
I'm not done illustrating Gethen. Genly Ai and Therem Harth rem ir Estraven: you are next. Once I finish the commissions I'm working on and have the time and energy for personal art, that is.

literally though if you feel like your life is slipping through your fingers and every day goes too fast… try doing hard things, not just taking the easy route, like reading and making art and exercising and cooking a meal from scratch and journaling, doing these things without distraction, without being absorbed on a screen… the time will stretch and you’ll be reminded that life is long and beautiful if you make it so.
every time i start to feel cringe for being too deep in the hyperfixation i remember the intense depression i have waded through and have to remind myself that enjoyment is fleeting (so grab it with both hands), and life is for loving (so hold that love close), and if anyone thinks i’m cringe they must not be having a very good time (and i hope they can find a good time soon).
