The Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula (Monocentropus balfouri) is one of a very few, and probably the most famous species of tarantula that can be kept communally. Most tarantulas can be cannibalistic and will eat another tarantula in the same enclosure. But this species has been kept communally for many years with high levels of success. (good) side being able to recognise the 183828 spies the other side is sending because duh. look at them they have big scared eyes and shake at the sight of a commanding officer. they eat like starving dogs. they can't walk past the infirmary without tearing up a little.
i'm at the point where chores don't feel like some overwhelming thing that i feel guilty about not doing, they just feel like things i have the power to do to make my environment better. like i can just see that my floor is dirty and be like. well i would feel better if i swept this. and then do it. and that's like the most basic thing that a lot of people have already been doing for forever but to me it feels like a superpower
whumper who always accepts whumpee's negotiations. who mostly listens when whumpee begs. whose rules are very explicit and strictly enforced but outside of that? whumpee's free.
not enough whump where whumper acts like they have all the time in the world to do what they want with whumpee. what is not hurting whumpee for one day in the face of decades of doing whatever you want to them? do you need violence to break someone or do you think decades of captivity will suffice ?

Recently I’ve been really into characters that request to be tied up, for whatever reason. Some ideas I’ve been rotating around in my mind:
Whumpee was horribly traumatized by being isolated for a long time, to the point that they started to scratch themselves bloody as a form of self harm, just to feel anything. When they are rescued, they are semi-delirious and Caretaker has to restrain them to get them to stop hurting themselves. They realize that as long as they’re tied up, they literally can’t be isolated again because eventually someone will have to come in and give them food or water to keep them alive. Meaning they start to associate being restrained with safety from isolation, so they panic if unrestrained.
Exact same as previous point but it’s actually Whumper who first saved them from the isolation (maybe they were the one who put Whumpee in it, maybe they weren’t) and is absolutely delighted to see that Whumpee panics when left unrestrained (I personally like to think that Whumper does pet whump with Whumpee now). Bonus points if later on Caretaker tries to rescue them from Whumper and they don’t want to leave because they know Caretaker wouldn’t let them be constantly restrained the way Whumper does.
Hero works at a super abusive hero agency that overworks all its heroes and doesn’t let them have friends/family/whatever outside of hero work due to it being a ‘security risk’. So Hero is super touch starved and Villain feels bad for them so they start bringing them back to their lair after particularly rough fights to patch them up, and give them some much needed positive human contact. But Hero tells them that the agency will kill them if they find out that they are ‘fraternizing with the enemy’ (even though Hero is often very injured/exhausted when this happens and likely could not put up much of a fight even if they wanted to) so Villain has to tie them up, do all that under the guise of ‘capturing and interrogating’ them. Because obviously the agency doesn’t give a shit if one of their employees is getting routinely captured and tortured, but if they’re getting medical aid from a Villain? They would definitely care about that.
Hero who knows that they can’t actually escape an evil villain who has captured them and turned them into their pet. But they don’t actually tie Hero up or lock the doors or anything. This could be for so many reasons. Maybe Villain is just so much stronger than Hero that they both know trying to run is pointless. Or maybe Hero is ‘willingly’ staying with Villain in return for the safety of their team or city. Or Villain lives somewhere super secluded, so yeah, Hero could get out of the house but they’d just starve to death in the woods. Or Villain has the entire city under their control and as soon as Hero gets out someone just spots them and returns them to Villain. Whatever reason, Hero is trapped but theoretically does possess the physical ability to try to escape. This is killing them inside, they can’t just not even try. So they keep trying to escape, even knowing it’s futile, likely getting themselves hurt and traumatized every single time they try (either that or they don’t try to escape and feel incredibly guilty about that). So eventually they just snap and beg Villain to just tie them up so they can actually rest without either being actively working on an escape plan or feeling incredibly guilty for having the ability to try to escape and not even trying. They can’t feel guilty for not trying to escape if they’re restrained and don’t posses the ability to even start an escape attempt.
Any ideas or prompts for how to condition a whumpee without leaving any scars?

This is fun because you didn’t say ‘do you have ideas for physical torture that doesn’t leave scars?’ - you said conditioning. Which opens up so many possibilities.
The first thing you have to realize is that there are many ways to condition someone. Primarily, we have positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Secondarily, it can be a psychological effect or a physical effect. Psychological conditioning can be incredibly effective - possibly more effective than physical conditioning, and mixing and matching these traits can give varied and fun results.
The only hard and fast rule with conditioning is consistency. Unless the ‘condition’ you want whumpee in is ‘broken beyond repair’, whumpee needs to know what actions give what outcomes and be able to predictably make decisions (to gain or avoid certain outcomes) that whumper wants them to make.
Let’s chart out a few examples. Since I mentioned two elements earlier (psychological <—> physical, and negative <—> positive), we can pop that shit right on a graph.
Example A: This is our hard and fast whump. Whumper is unforgiving and cruel. They are unafraid to beat, whip, or otherwise torture whumpee for every single toe out of line. They don’t offer comfort or praise - if they do, it’s incredibly rare and makes whumpee suspicious as fuck. Whumpee’s ‘reward’ for a job well done is not getting hurt that day. Whumper is surprisingly good at controlling their temper, choosing violence as a joy and a tactic rather than wielding it without control. Whumpee lives in fear, walking on eggshells and doing anything at all to avoid being harmed again.
Example B: A classic yandere sits here. Whumper is incredibly loving and dotes on whumpee when they’re being good, but isn’t afraid to lash out if whumpee shows any signs of refusing their love or wanting to leave. Whumpee will paper them and shower them with praise and affection, but snap immediately into beatings if whumpee responds improperly. They berate and insult whumpee, slowly convincing them that no one else could ever love them. Combining mostly psychological positives and physical negatives, whumpee will often feel like whumper is easier to understand as two people - the safe one, and the monster. It’s rare for whumper to truly be plural, but whumpee’s survival instincts will have them adapt to react to both of whumper’s states as if they were entirely different people, needing to become entirely different themselves to deescalate the situation.
Example C: The soft yandere. Also incredibly effective in situations where whumpee is in a position of power (ie, a prince forced to move to a new place against their will). Whumpee is never physically harmed. Ever. Whumper has the moral high ground and will often repeatedly point out that they’ve never hurt whumpee. They may insult them, but much of whumpee’s torture involves being locked in their room. Whumpee is rewarded lavishly when they behave the way whumper wants them to, and before long, the rewards and treats may overwhelm the desire to not be there. At least they’re getting some affection and lovely things. Why be sad in your room all day when you could be out having a nice meal with whumper and visiting the garden? Happiness is a choice, and it’s hard to remember why they weren’t happy here.
As you can see, there’s a near-infinite amount of ways a whumpee can be ‘conditioned’ with or without physical pain. That being said, I think what you really wanted to know is some physical torture methods that don’t leave scars. At least, not if you take care. Anything at all can leave a scar if you move roughly or bind them tight. In contrast, plenty of other things would leave a scar, but may not if the wound is cared for properly or the scars are strategically placed.
Torture techniques that don’t cause inherent scarring.
- Drowning
- Electrocution (dependent on location and intensity, ofc)
- Drugging - bad trip or just sensations and unknown
- Torturing loved ones instead
- Gaslighting
- Starvation
- Temperature shock
- Temperature extremes
- Phobia plays
- Dehydration
- Isolation
- Confinement
- Overstimulation / sensory overload
- Sensory Deprivation
- Induced hallucinations/hypnosis
- Stress positions
- Nerve poking (the opposite of good acupuncture)
- Restricted circulation
- Frostbite or burning (in moderation)
- Gentler whippings (soles of feet, especially)
- Dislocations
- Broken bones
- Damaging (not severing) tendons
- Concussions
Methods to avoid visible scarring:
- The inside of the mouth heals quickly and stays out of sight
- Lots of oils and lotions to keep the skin hydrated and avoid stretching while it works
- Tattoos cover a lot if they’re the right texture
- Invisible stitches rather than ones that zigzag over the skin
- Cuts in the creases of the body (lines in the hands, elbows, along every curve) (shoutout to @distinctlywhumpthing for that brilliant idea in her series, Together and Apart)
- Massaging the fresh scar a few minutes a day helps break down scar tissue
- Of course, keeping the wound incredibly clean.
- Minimize movement and stretching that section of flesh. The stiller it is, the cleaner the heal.

thinking about conditioning, and the horror of how inescapable it is. specifically, conditioning a compliant whumpee.
whumpee knows the rules. they don't intend to break them. it's not worth the cost.
it doesn't matter, because knowing the rules is not enough. whumper needs whumpee completely incapable of disobeying. whumper doesn't care about whumpee's compliance; there's nothing they can do to appease them. whumpee's will means nothing. whumper won't be satisfied until whumpee's body rejects even an attempt at breaking the rule.
"it's a test," whumpee thinks - but it's not a test you can pass. whumper wants them to disobey. whumper will force them to disobey by any means necessary so they can punish them brutally for it, again and again and again.
I’ve been in a terribly whumpy mood lately, so please for your consideration, imagine a whumpee that’s been so heavily conditioned by whumper that they can’t really function without rules and orders, and now imagine a caretaker that will actually do that. I see so much where the caretaker tries to break whumpee out of that mindset, but what about a caretaker who just doesn’t have the time or resources to break the conditioning, and so their next best option is to just… go along with it?
whumpee won’t eat or drink or sleep without being ordered to? caretaker puts rules in place that require whumpee to do those things at set times, and the consequences for missing one of those times (because you know whumpee won’t accept that there are rules without punishments for breaking them) is to do that thing in the company of caretaker. whumpee misses their lunchtime? now they have to sit with caretaker to make sure they actually eat the food set out for them. it’s a consequence that doesn’t actually harm them, and one that will subtly reinforce that caretaker values whumpee’s wellbeing, without seeming like a cop-out.
caretaker knows that whumpee has been irrevocably changed by their experiences under the hand of whumper, and they know that the trauma incurred isn’t something that can easily be contradicted or fixed. they know whumpee is damaged, and they know it isn’t something they can help with right now, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to give up and leave whumpee behind, or expect whumpee to just bounce back on their own. caretaker wants whumpee to be safe and healthy, so they’re going to do their best to make that happen, even if they have to utilize the very conditioning that whumper put in place to make that happen.
