If Lucretia had time in her regular days, if she wasn’t busy with taking care of their daughter, if she wasn’t filled with an impeccable amount of nerves all the time, then maybe she would keep up with the status of his addiction. However, she was at the very least aware of the time and effort she would have to put into raising a daughter by herself when she’d left. She wished she’d ask about how he was doing with that - most likely to other people, people who she had always assumed would know only a fraction of the Andrei she’d get to know. Now, she knew a fraction of what they did. “You know I c-can’t let you do that. It’s the most you can d-do and I just -” Once again something clearly welled at her insides, and lapping over the edges was panic. Of anything, it was probably guilt and yet, she rocked on her heels once before planting her feet to the ground and biting her lip. “I just mean, I w-would feel very terrible. You could and I’m sure M-Mia would love it and she’d p-probably love having you stay the night. Maybe if you hit it off . .” Her words suddenly stopped and her eyes snapped shut, cursing the hope still curled in her gut before she assured, “4 is fine. I usually grab us sandwiches on Tuesdays b-before I pick her up - and walk to get her, b-but it’s fine.”

Truth was, it didn’t get better. In fact, it got drastically worse after they left. So much, he’d been threatened to be fired, and within reasons. He had to be sober to do a good job, and with how out of control he’d become, they could only think about the eventuality one day, he might walk into work, and not be sober. Not that it ever happened, but Andrei could understand where their doubts came from. Although lately, mostly with what happened with Matthew, he started feeling like drinking wasn’t always the solution. Not that it was under control now, but he’d less often turn to alcohol whenever something went wrong. “Then let me do just this one thing. What would be Thanksgiving without a turkey?” Truth be told, turkeys were expensive. But it wouldn’t be a problem, particularly not if he was doing it for Mia. “I just... I don’t want to impose. If it’s too much for you, I don’t mind going home.” He assured, although he wished he could stay for Mia, he didn't want to be a burden. “We can... I mean, if you want to, we can get something to eat after.”

She’d ducked inside for a break from the frigid temperatures on her way home, but the lure of alcohol warming her body had been all too tempting. So here Catherine had remained. “Something tells me that’s one can of worms you do not want to open.”

Lifting his head from where it was resting in his hand, Andrei looked in direction of the woman that had just spoken. Certainly, no one in the right mind would want to openly talk about everything that was happening in town. But then again... “But is it better to keep it bottled up?”

Not only was the power knocked out everywhere in town, including the station, one of their own had been found brutally murdered in the streets. He was one of the better men on the force, someone Zarah had grown quite fond of over the years. Processing the loss of loved ones had never been her strong suit, but one person who the news was probably hitting far worse came to mind, so she packed her bag and abandoned the mountain of paperwork scattered across her desk. It was no surprise when she found Andrei sat in his usual spot, with his usual drink in hand. She had only just caught what he was saying under his breath as she slipped into the seat next to him, prompting a shrug. “I stopped asking myself that years ago, vato. What’s the use?”

Usually, in times like this, Andrei would be downing drink after drink. But lately, it felt like there’d been more and more odd happenings adding up, and he wasn’t much in the mood to drink. Sure, he’d take one, but he’d barely drank half of it so far, and couldn’t bring himself to finish the glass. No need to mention, anyone that really knew him could tell something was wrong. It was only when he heard the voice that Andrei looked up from contemplating the half empty glass in his hand. “But I can’t just get it off my mind, înger.” Andrei started, his fingers unconsciously wrapping tighter around the glass. He couldn’t just ignore all the crazy around when he wasn’t sure about his family’s safety. “I’ve been calling this place home for... years. How can I keep on doing that when it’s not safe anymore?”

Once layered clothes were in a pile on the chair next to her she turned to face Andrei. She watched him toss the clothes onto the couch and his eyes were fixated on something. It had been her own negligence to not remember her tattoo, how could she be so careless? Before she could protest or step away from him he had taken a few steps closer to her, his vision solely focused on her wrist. If anyone else had seen it she could have lied and told them she got it at the local tattoo parlor and that it was the day of her birthday or it was her lucky number, but Andrei had seen it many years ago. He knew she had it when she was 12 years old and what 12 year old had a tattoo? Priya’s breath caught in her throat as she looked from her tattoo to him. She instinctively covered it with her other hand and looked up at Andrei. “It’s-…” She stuttered to think of an excuse. “It’s a tattoo.” Priya finally said in a softer more vulnerable voice. “And was it was back then too.”

It took everything for him to look away from the tattoo, and it was only when she covered it that he could look up at her. It didn’t make sense, none of it did. Why would she have a tattoo when she was 12? What kind of parents let their kids have a tattoo at that age? What kind of tattoo artist accepted to do it? But it was then, he realized she didn’t have a family back then. And everything made even less sense after realizing that. He’d known from the beginning there was something different with her, but this was bringing it to a whole new level, and he couldn't find any logical explanation to any of it. “But... why?” Andrei finally managed to say after a moment. But it took him some more time before managing to add more words. “Why do you have that? Who did it to you?”

Despite the storm still going on outside, Andrei couldn’t stay locked in his apartment. Not when one of his own coworkers had been found dead. So naturally, he found his way to the pub, shortly after ordering a glass. Which remained nearly even touched, far too concerned and affected by the news. His fingers were drumming against the glass, his head leaned in his other hand. “What’s wrong with this town?” He whispered, mostly to himself, but it’d be no surprise if someone else heard.

Priya looked up at him when he finally said he wanted to help her. He wasn’t just doing it out of pity or obligation but he actually wanted to help. She gave him a small smile of gratitude before nodding about the clothes. She knew he had to go get the clothes but the snow had already melted and her clothes were now wet again her skin, making her shiver. She took off the leather jacket she had on followed by her fingerless gloves. The fingerless gloves had become a everyday necessity for Priya and it was unusual to see her without anything covering her wrists. As a child and even so many years later, she was constantly afraid someone would see her 004 tattoo and either figure out what it meant or send her back to the lab. Maybe it was the cold or that being back in Andrei’s apartment alone make her revert back to that first night they met, but she had forgotten about the tattoo on her wrist as she tossed the gloves on top of her jacket leaving her wrists exposed.

It wasn’t like he’d have a lot of clothing options for her. Since everything would be much too large for her, he just decided to get anything that would be warm enough. Which mostly consisted of a hoodie and some pants. They’d have to do for now, at least until her clothes were dry. But he’d barely made it back, not even having time to say anything, that his eyes caught sight of something. Had he not seen it, it would’ve remained long forgotten, having believed it was only some marker. But that 004 on her wrist was the exact same she had years ago. “What’s that?” Andrei asked in complete shock, tossing the clothes aside on the couch. It only took a few steps for him to get in front of her, eyes still fixated on what appeared to be a tattoo. “I thought that was markers, why do you still have it?”

An inhale as sharp as a knife sounded from the brunette, seemingly in response to his sentiment. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy hearing it, but the fact that he said it now after he’d refused to boot his nights out for them. However, she would not snap at him; not like she did the night they’d left and most importantly, she didn’t want to snap at him. Instead, she ran a brief hand down her face and nodded her head. Wavering on her feet, she issued him a gaze that was only slightly more loose as the paperwork was tugged back towards her core. Certainly the news was good for him and although she hadn’t been ecstatic when Mia had asked about her father after so long, she would embrace the smile he fostered - at least glad to see him content. “Uhm, today?” She echoed, “That’s okay. I just . . I d-don’t think I’ll be able to afford turkey this year and I need to know if you’re p-planning to stay the night. If you could just bring bread, I could make spaghetti or . . or something.” Her words appeared far off almost as if the prospect of Thanksgiving wasn’t only a week away, but soon her attention wavered back to him. “Wait, uh, what time do you get off w-work?”

He expected a reaction to his words. He knew that was all she asked for two years ago, yet he never seemed to be able to do it. Perhaps he took for granted that they’d still be there, forever. But now that he lost them, it only seemed to give him the motivation to get better. It was too late, though, Andrei knew that. But if it could at least allow him to see his daughter more often, that was already a good beginning. Still, at her words, he shook his head slightly. “I can get a turkey, if you want. It’s the least I can do.” He started replying, but avoided the subject of where he’d sleep. He’d rather stay there, get more time to reconnect, but he didn’t want to impose either. “I don’t want to be a bother, I can just go home if you’d rather that.” It felt like the best option, at least, he expected it to be what she wanted to hear. “At 4, is that too early? Or too late? We could always do it another way, whatever is easier for you.”

Priya made it inside the door and started following him up the steps. Her clothes were covered in snow and within minutes would be soaking wet once the snow melted. As she followed him, she got the sense of deja vu. It was like it was 12 years ago but a much younger Andrei taking Priya in after she had fled the lab and Zach’s house. As she made her way inside his apartment she wanted to decline his help, mostly because she hated having people help her, but her body was already starting to shiver. “You sure?” She asked, not denying his help but not completely accepting it right away either. “You’ve helped me before, don’t feel like you have to do it again.”

While the place was still obviously warmer, he had no doubts it was only meant to get colder. And by this point, the snow on her clothes would’ve already melted, making it even worse. “I make a living out of helping people, of course, I’m sure.” Obviously, helping others wasn’t the only thing his job required, but he did consider it the most rewarding part of it. They’d just made it inside, but it was enough for him to notice her shivering. A frown pulled on his face, giving a small shake of his head at her words. “I want to help you.” He stated before moving on. “I don’t think I have anything your size, but at least it’ll be dry, and warm.”

Priya sucked in a breath before she heard a voice. It pulled her out of her daze and she turned to see who it belonged to. As soon as she saw the man she knew him. It was Andrei, one of the few people who met her before she had been adopted by the Helms. She looked around to make sure this was her only option before hurrying towards his door. “I-..” She stuttered as she made inside his doorway and rubbed her hands together. “I didn’t-… I thought I had more time. I got d-distracted.” She told him already trying to explain why she had been out there in the horrible storm.

It seemed like madness to be still out in the storm. No one with a sane mind would purposefully sill wander out, but then of course, there was the possibility they got stuck outside involuntarily. But the thought was shaken off as soon as the door closed behind her. “You’re safe now, it doesn’t matter.” He said, making only a few steps towards the stair before turning around, making sure she was following. That was when he realized how cold she must be, and that soon enough, it would get nearly as cold inside as well, with the power out. At least they could have furniture to keep them warm inside. “I can lend you some clothes, and a blanket, if you want.”

Priya knew she shouldn’t be out at that hour. With the storm starting and only getting worse she should have headed home a lot sooner. But she had gotten distracted while eating at the diner and looking through all the information she had gathered about Matthew’s case. The lights had flickered and immediately scared her. Memories of the lab flashed through her head and almost instantly she got up to leave. She stuffed her papers into her bag before pulling her jacket, hat, and gloves on and headed out into the storm. Of course, the one night she didn’t drive her car the storm came. Priya started towards her apartment building but hers was still a decent amount away. The wind was whipping through her hair and blow against her face as she tried to stay warm. The street lights over head flickered and then went off. Priya let out a nervous breath and looked around, starting to worry.

The moment the snow started, Andrei knew it was going to get ugly. Luckily, he had the day off, meaning he stayed well inside his apartment. And although he tried to waste the day away in alcohol, he seemed, for a rare time, not quite in the mood to get wasted. Something about his instincts, wanting everyone to be safe, was keeping him from drinking to excess. So quite early in the storm, he moved to the chair he had by the window, looking outside. It got boring rather quickly, particularly because the storm wasn’t that bad. And when it got worse, there was barely anyone wandering the streets anymore. Until he spotted a figure through the snow, not too long after the power went out. Although he wasn’t sure who it was, Andrei took no more time before rushing down the stairs and opening the door. Almost instantly, he recognized the girl. “Pryia?” He first said, before worry took over. “What are you still doing outside? Come in!”

“How are you supposed to p-promise that?” The brunette mumbled, jerking her hand towards her face to catch welling tears. Studying him for the moments she had, she admired his lame excuse for a reassuring smile and finished his action for him; a brief hug that warmed Lucretia for nothing more than a few seconds. The feeling that welled in her heart sunk as quickly as it had appeared. Her breath wavered, rubbing her left eye once more as she reared her head away. A wave of uncertainty lingered in her stomach, hopeful of the possibility he could be drawing back on his nights out. All she dreamed of of those nights was the number of drinks he had - having never fathomed he could be doing anything else. “I know . . you want us to stay.” She breathed, avoiding a glance of whatever was left of his smile and biting her lip. “But I-I need to keep her safe and c-can you really protect her? The next time a kid goes missing, I’ll . .” She needn’t finish, pulling the paperwork to her side before her gaze set back on him. Clearing her throat, she shuffled her feet as a breeze from the front door stirred her. Almost as hurriedly as she had ran into him, the topic was switched around - onto one she was aware needed to be addressed no matter that she had retracted their daughter from him in order for her to live and forget. “Mia . . she . . w-wanted to invite you to Thanksgiving - herself. She’s at daycare r-right now, but I could bring her by some time next week or we could p-pick her up . . or . . I don’t know.”

Andrei could only shrug at her question. He’d do anything for Mia, it wasn’t hard for him to promise this. But he couldn’t find the words to explain it. Luckily for him, he didn’t have time to say anything as he felt her arms around him. Even if it only lasted a few seconds, it was enough to appease him from all the torment he’d been feeling lately. But the moment she pulled back, it all came back to him, and worry just stretched on his face. A small shake moved his head before he spoke again. “You know I would never let anything happen to her. Or to you.” Although he couldn’t say it, both of them were the most precious things he had, he couldn’t afford to lose them more than he already had. But those weren’t words he could say, and he just hoped she would understand it. Surprise didn’t take time to appear on his face, however, at her next words. It meant a lot to him, that Mia wanted him there, more than she could probably imagine. He had to stay silent for a moment, letting the feeling sink in, and allowing his head to nod slowly. “I would love that.” The words left his lips almost in a whisper, but it didn’T fail to place a small smile on his lips. “We could pick her up today. Well, if you want to.”

Paperwork squeezed to her chest, it had been difficult to breathe since she had seen him, but now it deemed even worse. This happened every time. It wasn’t new, but conversations were so few and far between that it wasn’t normal either. She didn’t know why distrust thought it best to seep in her bones every time she talked to him. After all, it was simple for her to identify if there was an ounce of alcohol on his breath. She’d done it so many times before that it was second nature. Even with the conditioning of her behavior towards him though, it was difficult to not worry when she passed the bar in the evenings. Whether or not he accepted it, she cared more than she would ever say. Her only hope was that Mia could care less when the time came - could take on the world without the burden of a drunken father. “P-passports?” Echoed Lu, shifting her feet as well as her horrified gaze. She was trying her best to keep her eyes from dampening even further while her voice lowered, “I-I’m scared, Andrei. A child has been abducted and the c-culprit is still out there. If . . if Mia’s next -” Distress arose in her voice, her continued mania sifting out her words as she shifted the wedding band around her finger. “Anybody in this room could have k-kidnapped that boy - k-killed him. Think how much easier it would be to do that to a four-year-old. O-our four-year-old.“

Her words hit him like a bullet. Everything she said, every single word, was exactly what he’d been fearing since the incident. He couldn’t stop thinking about the risk of Mia being taken, but it seemed like there was nothing he could do. Not when he never even saw her. But it was obvious by the tone of her voice they were both scared, and if he let it show, it’d only get worse. So gulping down, Andrei tried a smile, although he seemed weak, and unsure. At least he tried, it was better than nothing. “We don’t know yet what happened to him, but...” He started, shaking his head a little. They didn’t know, but what else could’Ve happened to him? Most seemed to think that’s what happened, and he was starting to believe it himself. But he brushed the thought off his mind. That was not the kind of things he wanted to be thinking about when attempting to make her feel more secure. “I swear, Lu, I swear I won’t let anything happen to her. You can trust me on that.” He’d sleep outside of the house just to make sure no one tried to get in, if needed, but he was not letting anyone take her. Instinctively, he started to move, about to pull her into a hug, but stopped soon enough. Perhaps that was what he used to do, but he could only imagine this wasn’t something she wanted anymore.

The police station had almost started to become taboo; that was something she’d never have dreamed about thinking five or more years ago, especially when she had first stepped into this vagrant town. Paranoia hadn’t lapped at her throat like a river after a flood. That was all solely today’s thinking and sometimes she couldn’t help but wonder if she would have moved out if she hadn’t had a child. Believe it or not, she hoped she wouldn’t have. The drinking was something she could have dealt with if it hadn’t been for their daughter. Half of her work days were spent at the police station - no matter. Those days were most obviously the hardest to struggle through, but every day was hard. The door chimed behind her as she slid inside, struggling with skinning herself of her coat before shouldering it on the coat rack. Her fingers closed around the paperwork as she ventured further into the station; she was here for both work and passports, which she was lucky they had. However, setting an appointment for passports beforehand meant word had had the chance to spread like wildfire already. She should have been aware of that before she almost skirted right around Andrei - until he noticed. Her heart still having the nerve to hiccup before she mumbled out a greeting, “I - uhm, hello.”

Words spread fast in the police station. Even more so when it concerned Lucretia or his daughter. Or at least, it got to his ears faster than the usual rumors would, and with reasons. He still deserved to know what she planned to do with Mia. Most of the dy up until now, he was distracted from work, trying to figure out what exactly he should tell her. And even as he found himself standing in front of her, Andrei still hadn’t worked out his speech. “Hey.” It was the first thing he could say, falling silent for a moment afterward. He had many thoughts running around in his mind, but couldn’t straighten up his mind enough, hence why he didn’t know where to start. For sure, he’d gotten even worse since she left, perhaps that was why his mind seemed so messed up. Somehow, he was seeing why she left, no one would purposefully stay with a mess like him. But through all those thoughts, he could tell he wasn’t there to discuss about her leaving, but something completely different. His eyes fell on the paperwork in her hands, making a vague gesture in its direction. “Why do you need passports?”

It’d been a hard time for all of them. It felt like slowly, it was starting to affect everyone in town. Of course, it could never affect anyone as much as it affected the Helms. Perhaps that was why he was instantly ready to volunteer for the search, and not only because he was a cop. He truly wanted to help, because that’s how he’d want people to react if he was in their situation.
