Favorite gift you've ever received?

I guess it would have to be the necklace my mother gave me for my 11th birthday. It has the Black family crest to always remind me where I’ve come from.

I can’t possibly say. I mean Narcissa is my little sister and I would do anything to protect her but I’m equally close to Regulus.

Dorcas turned sharply, to face the person behind her. “I’m not trying to be rude, honestly, however, I need you to either take two steps back, so you aren’t stepping on my feet, or walk to the side of me so you can tell me whatever it was you wanted.”

“Oh!” Andromeda hadn’t realised she was so close behind Dorcas, and quickly jumped back on the request. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realise.”

Kieren had been a little late getting out of Quidditch Practice and the rest of the team had left without him. Not that he really minded, after the noise of practice the quiet evening grounds were much more appealing. Unfortunately his quiet moment of peace was broken by the sound of footsteps behind him. Perfect. 

“I know it’s tempting but if you keep following me you’re not going to enjoy the result,” He said, raising his voice slightly so he could be heard without turning around. His free hand sneaked down to the wand in his pocket. 

Andromeda had been behind him walking through the grounds not exactly following him but heading in the same direction in a world of her own her mind racing full of other thoughts when his voice broke through. “W-what?” she said surprised by his words. “I- I wasn’t following you. I’m just going back to the castle.”

Alex was in the library. He had to repeat that thought to himself several times for it to really sink in. The library, of all places. Willingly. He was going to have to break at least seven rules once this was over in order to feel like himself again. If someone saw him, he was going to lose at least half of his punk cred. These really were dark times. However, he was pretty sure Slughorn thought he was somehow behind that stupid prank and so he was determined to actually write the essay about why the professor was wrong. The prank wasn’t even his style. Brilliant, maybe, but there had been no flames. Like Alex could even brew a potion, anyways. 

He was lost in that train of thought, not watching where he was walking, when he ran straight into someone. Books went everywhere, making enough noise that he was pretty sure he was going to be banned from the library again. “Oh fuck- I’m so sorry.” He bent down, frantically gathering books. “But, like, can you not tell anyone you saw me here?”

Andromeda had been just heading out of the library, books she had borrowed clutched in her arms when she walked straight into Alex her books falling all over the floor. She quickly scrambled to pick them up and stuff them into her bag, glancing up at Alex as he asked her not to tell anyone she saw him here. Her eyebrows knitted together in confusion. “Why? Worried that you’ll ruin your reputation?”

“Between Bellatrix being a psycho and Narcissa being self-proclaimed princess of all the lands, how did you end up relatively normal?” Marlene inquired, not bothering to hesitate when it came to insulting Andromeda’s sisters. There was no doubt that Andromeda knew what half the school thought of her sisters. It wasn’t as if she was saying anything new, not in Marlene’s eyes.

Andromeda couldn’t disagree. She wanted to defend her sisters but there wasn’t much she could say against Marlene’s points - they were true. Andie shook her head with a laugh, “who knows. Middle child syndrome maybe.”

When Andromeda alerted her that it had been almost a month, Alice wanted to scoff. Had time flown by that quickly? Of course it had. It was strange feeling, this responsibility, and though she knew life was only going to give her more & more of it ( she thought herself prepared for it, at least ) – Alice couldn’t help but be shocked by it. “Honestly? It feels strange. I still remember getting the badge and now we’re almost at Halloween? Salazar’s pants, between this and Dueling Club, it’s going to be February before we even know it, yeah? I mean, it’s been smooth, but my father always says as soon as you get comfortable is when you’re in trouble. How do you think I’m doing as Head Girl? Doling out enough punishments?”

“You’re an excellent Head Girl,” Andromeda beamed, reassuring her friend. “I only hope that I can do as good of a job next year,” she said with a sly grin. She didn’t know she’d be head girl next year, in fact there were plenty of good contenders for the position but she was sure that the teaching staff would see her value. “More than enough punishments - I mean with Slughorn’s I don’t think you need anymore. Oh I’m sorry, we’re not talking about that are we?”

A sly smile adjusted itself onto Marlene’s face. It didn’t necessarily amuse her to see Andromeda in such a vulnerable position, but it was nice to see that the purebloods were all just as human as the rest of the cast and crew. “I wouldn’t dream of it, princess,” she assured the other girl, “Family can be a pain in the ass.”

Andromeda gave Marlene a grateful smile, so glad to have her promise she wouldn’t tell Sirius or anyone that she was inquiring about her cousin. She couldn’t let any of her family members know she was still asking after Sirius and she didn’t want him worrying either. “Thank you. Tell me about it,” she said with a playful smile.

Sirius’ grin grew as Andromeda lighted up a little bit and leaned back into his chair. He turned his face a little bit as she mentioned moving out and just leaving but tried finding the correct way to approach it. “I get it Andie, I really do. But, are you ready for that? Are you ready for just completely shutting out the entirety? No mean to offend but..Sometimes your mother comes off worse than mine and we’ve witnessed the damage mine has made.” He said, his voice dropping into a low whisper. “That’s a big mental step that I want you to consider..Now.” 

Andromeda shook her head quickly when he spoke about them shutting her out. That wasn’t what she wanted, not at all, but she figured much like Regulus that if she could move abroad after Hogwarts they might not find out her lifestyle choices. “They won’t shut me out.” She said a little too firmly.

Getting up from the perch after one last look at the grounds, she made a groan, “I wish as Head Girl I could overrule the professors so EVERYONE doesn’t have to do that stupid essay. You ought to help me rebel.” Alice held out her arm to Andromeda, “at least you’re taking a break. Poor Angelique and a Ravenclaw I know seem to be up all hours with no breaks trying to finish it. But we need to make a rule, the moment we’re outside we’re not allowed to let any talk of that essay slip out of our mouths.” 

Andromeda stood, gathering her things into her bag before linking her arm through Alice’s glad to have her friend to talk to. “No talking about the essay,” Andie agreed, relieved that she wouldn’t have to talk about it anymore. She loved potions and enjoyed having a reason so sit in the library, writing with no one bothering her. “How about how you are using your Head Girl power? How does it feel? You’ve had almost a month now.”

There was only a flicker of softening across Marlene’s features as it dawned on her that Andromeda was simply trying to get information on an important family member. With the background Marlene had, it was difficult for her to put herself in Andromeda’s shoes. “He’s always with his mates,” she assured the other, “He and I never find ourselves in deep conversation, but I know James is taking care of him. That’s what James does.”

Andromeda nodded, accepting the news gratefully happy to hear that Sirius had his friends and he could rely on him and that Marlene didn’t seem to have any worries about him. “Good.. Good,” she said offering a small smile. “Thank you.” She said thinking to end the conversation there before adding, “could you not tell him I asked?”

“Oh, yeah, yeah of course! Sorry, uh, you go anywhere fun over the summer?” Benjy asked. Sure, that was the most basic question he could probably have asked but whatever. As long as it wasn’t Slughorn it was a better topic, “Sorry that was a bit, uh… Boring question.”

“It’s fine,” she said a little sheepishly not really wanting to talk about the summer either especially considering Sirius’ leaving the family but she didn’t want to explain that instead just shrugging. “It was erm, good. I guess. Same as always. I mean, I spent time with my family so I guess that was nice.”

Regulus tried his best to quietly close the heavy wooden door and headed off down the hallway. “The Slytherin common room isn’t exactly the height of freedom, but it’s an improvement. We definitely deserve some sort of celebration.” He felt he belonged in his house, but that didn’t change that they somehow related to half the people in it. 

Andromeda grinned and took his arm as they walked towards the common room. “Yes, before we are too swamped with work. I can’t believe I’m starting my N.E.W.Ts already - time has gone so quickly and so slowly at the same time, hasn’t it?”
