I spy with my little eye... a woman among President Obama's senior advisers. Kind of. Valerie Jarret's leg is barely visible peeping out behind khakis in front of the desk of the President, who has been criticized for lacking women in his "inner circle." I look forward to the rest of his appointments, and to diverse pictures of the President's cabinet where several women--not just a peeping leg--are visible. He tried with Susan Rice, and needs to continue to honor diversity not just with words, but with actions.

Women's underrepresentation in leadership is partly attributed to the discrimination and unique challenges women face in presenting themselves to the public, often made manifest in their attire. While men are often "ready to go" with the uniform of a suit and tie, there is a wide-ranging spectrum of professional clothing options for women, from dresses to suit-skirt combinations to pantsuits, and women are faced with a complex decision calculus on the age-old question: "What should I wear?!"

In reflecting on a viral image Rosea Lake posted to her tumblr classifying women by the length of clothing down a leg, Dr. Lisa Wade thoughtfully illustrates why "women have so many clothes" to fit a range of not only occasions but expectations.

Valor knows no gender. -President Barack Obama

The Pentagon lifts its ban on women in combat.

Facts:

More than 150 American military women have died and another 1,000 women have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ban-lift replaces a 1994 military policy memo signed by Les Aspin, a defense secretary under President Bill Clinton, that excluded women from assignments to units below the brigade level if the unit would be engaged in direct combat.

The new policy is expected to open 230,000 front-line positions to women.
