reasons why i'm anti-psychiatry (personal and historical)

when i was having a mental breakdown (for lack of a better word), emergency services were called on me to drive me to the hospital. i confided in one of the operators that i was trans and she outed me to my family. fortunately this didn't result in any transphobic violence, but it could have.

when i told a psychiatrist that the medication he put me on was decreasing my libido he immediately dismissed it by saying "that's something depression also does". i had never had a low libido prior to taking those meds.

when i told another psychiatrist that i thought i was autistic, she said that she didn't think i was and that it wouldn't be relevant for my treatment anyway.

that same doctor stopped my mom from speaking for me, even tho i struggle with communication sometimes (but surely i don't have autism, right? /sarc).

later on i had to do a more intensive treatment with a nurse who deadnamed me and was very rude to me when i corrected her.

in my experience, doctors don't do a thorough enough job of explaining the side effects of the medications they prescribe.

psychiatry has historically been used to deny autonomy to, and to abuse people, especially vulnerable groups like women, poc, lgbtqia+ people, the homeless, and drug users.

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
