You know what? I do miss Warhammer.
Every weekend we went down to the game store to play. They had 6 big tables to play on, beautiful hand-made terrain.
I was 16, the rest were about 8 decent blokes, each no younger than 35, responsible adults all with families and careers. A few had wives who painted minis and played too. Everyone knew each other. No other kids besides me, yet they made me feel comfortable and included.
I was always bringing in conversions or kit-bashed minis to show off. Everyone loved showing off their minis. Winning games was not in the forefront. It was about having fun moments, making each other laugh.
Setting up armies of tiny boys, plastic or pewter. Back when a box of 30 small alien boys was only about 20 bucks. Games Workshop sold "Bits" which were metal parts of each miniature (heads or arms) for customization. Minis from as far back as the 80's were still in the catalogue.
Rulebooks/Rules editions lasted 5 or even 10 years. We would stay up and play as long as the manager felt like staying around. Depending on how much fun everyone was having, that could be 1 or 2am.
A convenience store right next to us, caffeine and snacks, rowdiness within reason.

Highlight of my whole week. I was being homeschooled at the time, so that was where all my socializing took place. Mom never had to worry about me getting into trouble or drugs or booze, because the guys were responsible adults. She even got to know a few of them.
Now those fellas have moved on. Sometimes it was because they had kids, the ones who already had kids didn't have the time anymore. The shop closed, re-opened at a new place, then closed and re-opened again. Some kept following along, some bowed out.
I miss those respectful, mostly responsible folks. I didn't get treated like a kid, just another one of them, and that felt special.
That environment just doesn't exist anymore. Guys and gals like that can't be found in the 2 remaining game stores we've got around here.
These game stores close at NINE now, for fuck's sake. NINE PM. After work that's enough time for 1 maybe 2 games, then going home.
The kids nowadays are all the same weird breed of noisy clown. Back in OUR day, we played dumb miniatures games with honest humor, civilized roasting, and dignified dumb bullshit.

That place, those people, I don't think I'll have anything like that again. It's just one of those things you can't go back to, the world is different, times have changed.
Can't bring myself to get rid of those damn minis or books though. Because maybe MAYBE the opportunity to use them may come again. Who knows.
