I’ve been aware of the concept of wabi-sabi for some time, and even before I was entirely aware of it it was an idea I chose to live by. It’s a Japanese world view that beauty lies in the imperfect and impermanent. So often in the western world we equate beauty with uniformity, newness, and perfection. So when something becomes broken it’s value is depleted to nearly nothing and is typically thrown out, or there is an attempt made it fix it in a way that no one could ever tell it was broken in the first place.

More recently I’ve looked at the wabi-sabi concept through the lens of Christianity and the parallels in our own lives. We can put on a show to make it look like we live a life with no cracks, and carry no issues. Seem indifferent to the difficulties around us, because we’ve grown accustomed to this version of “beauty.” And we may not just try to hide these things from other people, but from even ourselves and God.

And the thing is, God already knows all the parts of us. Even the ones we’d rather hide. And He loves us regardless. The imperfections of a person are what make them unique. Having broken pieces doesn’t mean someone is damaged goods lying powerless. Strength isn’t derived from status, material wealth, or what we have that can maximize pleasure. Christ will pick up the pieces and make us whole. He will use imperfect people the accomplish His perfect purposes.

Christ didn’t come to heal the unafflicted.

This quote I have never seen before, but when I read it I related to it so completely. I give myself so much to people, that I don’t realize when I don’t get this in return. I now a lot of people feel the same. Wether it be in love or friendship, you get all of me completely.
