I look up at the stars and feel like myself again
One of the worst feelings ever is being in your own house and feeling like you need to go home.
Not to sound selfish, but unfortunately quarantine has made it extremely harder for people with mental disorders.
DC UNIVERSE’S FIRST TV SERIES ‘TITANS’ IS GETTING POSITIVE REVIEWS AND HERE’S WHY!
Everything DC got right in its new series.
As a fan of all things DC and superheroes, my heart is happy with how Titans is faring so far. Admittedly, there was a little bit of worry on my part upon seeing the trailer for the first time. While I was excited to see it, I was also hoping I didn’t get disappointed with it. I’ve been waiting for this show to come out even when it wasn’t a sure thing yet. But now, I gotta say, waiting one week just for another episode is even harder.
With a positive 93% rating from Google users and 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I think I’m not the only one impressed. If you ask me, here are the reasons why we love it and keep coming back for more!
(As always, warning for the spoilers ahead!)
1. THE BOY WONDER
Two words: Dick Grayson.
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one here who is very motivated to watch because finally, finally! We get to see the Richard John Grayson portrayed as he was meant to be portrayed (no offense Chris O’ Donell). They really did give him an apt nickname as the Boy Wonder. Because boyyyy he is wonderful.
Although I’ve never imagined Dick as this dark and brooding character, I guess it only makes sense seeing as he recently called it quits with his sort- of adoptive father slash partner in superheroing. Plus, I’m guessing growing up around Batman isn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows, and it’ obvious from the flashbacks and from his reaction when Raven mentions the circus that the death of his parents still weighs very heavily on him. Again just like Bruce.
And that’s not where the similarities end. Even the way Dick fights clearly shows his training from Batman. We see him blending in with the shadows, grabbing enemies and whisking them away screaming. That use of the gas while covering half his face with the cape maneuver. This are all classic Batman techniques!
Also can we talk about how well he’s trained as a fighter? Because Hawk and Dove were about to be roasted birds before he swooped in to save them. They couldn’t handle the bad guys when there was two of them, but Dick made quick work of them without even breaking a sweat. Of course, since I’m talking about his awesome fighting skills, I need to mention that retractable bo staff. When he first brought it out, my heart literally leapt with joy because it looked so much like an eskrima stick which is his weapon of choice (as I’ve mentioned before). After it extended into a bo staff, I was a little disappointed. But only a little, because the way it happened was pretty cool. Well played Greg Berlanti and Akiva Goldsman. Well played.
We also need to give credit to Dick for his discipline. The way he cleans up his suit after every fight and checks all of his equipment really shows you the kind of training he received from Bruce (or maybe Alfred). As I was telling my dad, who is also a major fan by the way, “he seems to be the Batman we’ve always wanted, but never gotten.”
Of course, there are some bad sides. He needs to get rid of all that broodiness and darkness. Jason Todd could use some of it, though. Cause from what I’ve seen in the trailers, Jason seems to be a bit too preppy. I think somebody mistakenly switched their personalities. Also, no one appreciates a girlfriend stealer Dick! What the heck you doing cozying up to Dove? I would prefer it if he and Donna were together instead. I honestly ship them more than I do him and Starfire. I hope this is explored in the series.
On an ending note (because I could write about Dick Grayson all day), can we just thank whoever decided to cast Brenton Thwaites as Nightwing? Bless your soul. Who wouldn’t mind looking at him all day? *swoon*
(Our first time seeing Dick as he stalks a child abuser and contemplates on putting on his mask)
(Hello to you too Detective Grayson)
2. EDGINESS WITH A PINCH OF HUMOR
I’ve always loved DC’s dark tone. While I do appreciate the humor in Marvel, the dark tone of DC just gives it a much more realistic vibe. These are real people facing real dilemmas. They do get bruised (as seen in Dick’s shirtless scenes) and bloody and broken (as also seen from Hank’s shirtless scene). I like that the series is exploring that and showing us, that yes, these characters are far from perfect. That yes, they walk a fine line between being a hero and a villain, and one wrong decision could put them on the wrong side. They go through pain and heartbreak and betrayal. It’s very raw. Very dark. But I love it.
I also love that the attempt to inject humor here is just right. It’s not overly done or pathetic- looking like Shazam (sorry for those who are excited to see it, but really, I think they tried too hard to be funny with that one and just died). The humor here is much more muted, just perfect to give a little lightness from all the torn up feelings the characters are experiencing. Like I said, it’s just a pinch, but it’s there. And I think the writers have found a perfect balance.
3. PERFECT CAST
I’ve already thanked whoever cast Brenton Thwaites, but really I’m amazed by the entire ensemble. Even to the people behind the scenes for making a successful show to launch the DC Universe streaming platform. This can really be a good start for the other upcoming series like Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn.
Aside from Dick, I’d have to say Raven is also beautifully portrayed by Teagan Croft (and apparently she’s only fourteen?! Dude, what? Can I adopt her?!).
I’m also warming up to Starfire. From the first episode I’ve seen, she can be a badass, but her fun and cavalier personality also shines through as she tried to remember who she is. I’m hoping to see more of the free- spirited, fun- loving Starfire like in the comics and old animated series. Anna Diop is great with giving us the strong yet blasé personality, even that naivety, which Starfire seems to have.
And of course, let’s not forget Hawk and Dove (aka Hank and Dawn). Although I’m not a fan of their somewhat toxic relationship, I did fall in love with Dove’s calm and calming presence. On the other hand, I also like how Ritchson contrasts that with the douchebag that is Hank/ Hawk. Apparently, opposites still attract. Can’t wait to see Donna and Beast Boy incorporated more into the story.
4. ACTION (AND VIOLENCE?)
Welllllllll I’m not really a fan of the violence, but I guess it’s a part of what makes the show interesting. The fight scenes are very well choreographed. I love that there are some tumblings done by Dick (maybe a stunt double) that show his acrobatic roots. I also love the teamwork shown in the scene where he’s fighting alongside Hawk and Dove. There seems to be large amounts of blood spilled, whether it be the bad guys or the good guys. It’s not entirely necessary and reminds me too much of Netflix’s The Punisher, but I guess some people like that. Kudos to the fight choreographers though! Because of them (and not the blood) the fight scenes have become my favourite part of the show. I could watch those scenes a ton of times.
OTHER NOTEWORTHY THINGS:
· Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) is set to make an appearance and you don’t know how happy this makes me! She’s Dick’s best friend in the comics and I ship them so hard. Can’t wait to see what their chemistry will be like on screen and what Wonder Girl will bring to the table. Since Wonder Woman was a big hit, I’m expecting something good from her as well.
· People die in this universe and, although it makes me sad, it is something unavoidable in a superhero movie. I always kind of disliked the fact that no one ever stays dead in a superhero movie or story. Tragedy is a great part of what makes a hero. However, if they kill off Dove, I’m starting a protest.
· Starfire and Raven get costumes. Although it hasn’t been shown in the series per se, it’s been confirmed with some BTS pictures, and that’s nearly as good. My girl Donna should also get her own clothes otherwise-
· Grayson’s soft side when it comes to Rachel. Honestly, Dick being a dad to Rachel and totally denying that he’s good with family is the cutest thing ever (Also can we talk about him calling her Rache?! Too cute!)
And that’s about it! What are you most looking forward to seeing from Titans? Who do you want to be on the team? And are you liking it so far? Sound off with a comment!
BOOK REVIEW #1: The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider
I’ve recently started a slew of new ventures. One of which is to also do book reviews, since I seem to write well enough about movies. I do prefer the books, and it seemed a good idea. Although I won’t always be reviewing recently published books, I do hope to help you along with whether or not you should pick one up or if you should move along to a much more fascinating read. Let’s see, shall we?
(Picture taken from my My Day post)
I. Summary
Everything begins with a tragedy. That is the main theme that the book seems to center on, and it’s a pretty interesting hook in getting the readers to unravel the story of Ezra Faulkner. It begins with an accident, making you think that this is Ezra’s tragedy: a great tennis player who can no longer play the sport he loves, thus losing his identity. He grapples with changes as any teenager would- with great drama and humorous despair. Until, of course, he meets Cassidy Thorpe, who is the new girl in school. Ezra ends up joining the debate team, where unsurprisingly, Cassidy also ends up. Part of the team is Ezra’s ex- bestfriend, Toby. The two had separated once Ezra chose the path of the jocks while Toby wore suits to school because he was proud of being part of the debate team. Suffice to say, the two had travelled down different paths and didn’t expect to come across each other’s way, but the accident that Ezra hates so much for “crippling” him is actually what brings him his best friend back.
It also gives him the opportunity to get to know Cassidy Thorpe, who after going on treasure hunts with, climbing playground castles with and sneaking into college lectures with, finally falls in love with him, and he with her. Everything seems to be going well for majority of the book. But Cassidy has her own story, and her own tragedies.
At the beginning, it’s revealed that Cassidy was a champion debater before dropping out of a tournament (and of her school) to move to Ezra’s hometown of Eastwood. Though no reasons are given at the beginning, secrets are revealed after Cassidy breaks up with Ezra seemingly out of the blue. Because of this, Ezra reluctantly starts to dig into her past.
We find out that Cassidy’s older brother, Owen, who she speaks fondly of, is dead. And to put the icing on the proverbial cake, it was also her brother who caused Ezra’s accident and led to Ezra’s early retirement from ever playing tennis again. In the end, Ezra’s accident isn’t the tragedy. It’s Cassidy Thorpe.
II. Characters
Ezra Faulkner is the main character in the story, and everything is told from his perspective. Although Ezra was an athlete and considered one of the ‘popular’ kids, the author doesn’t paint him as the stereotypical jock. Rather, he does have musings and contemplations about what he is doing with his life, although it takes the car accident for him to wake up to his reality. At the start of the book, Ezra’s thoughts are rather ordinary and expected. Why did he date the pretty girl for so long even though he wasn’t happy in the relationship? Were his teammates really his friends, and if so, why didn’t they visit him in the hospital? But as the story progresses, being with Cassidy Thorpe makes his thoughts turn towards other, bigger questions. Who was he if he wasn’t pretending to be a mindless jock? What books did he like to read? What clothes felt comfortable to wear? He comes to realize he doesn’t know who he really is or what he wants to be- a very relatable dilemma everyone faces sometimes, even if we aren’t all seventeen year- old, hormonal teenage boys. In the end, Ezra also realizes that Cassidy didn’t change him. He was smart all along. He enjoyed intellectual jokes. And he didn’t enjoy parties or getting drunk, but preferred the silence of college libraries. He did everything on his own. Cassidy may have lit the spark that led him to the realization, but he decided who he was completely by himself.
Cassidy Thorpe is probably the most tragic character in the entire book. Though we are introduced to her as if she is free- spirited and thinks outside of the box, she holds the biggest and heaviest secret of all. She talks about being free from a prison, but it’s a prison of her own making. And this, Ezra believes, is the reason why she will never be able to escape. She holds on too tightly to the death of her brother, and after finding out that her brother is also to blame for Ezra’s accident, it causes her to feel guilt every time she looks at him. Schneider does a good job of creating characters that are very relatable, because Cassidy’s struggle mirrors our own. Don’t we all hold on to things a little too tightly? Don’t we all create makeshift prisons for ourselves? And with this realization comes the thought that maybe if we didn’t, we could escape the panopticon that Cassidy talks about in lengthy parts of the book.
III. Writing Style
Schneider’s story seems to start out slow and drag until the last few chapters. I’m not quite sure if it’s due to the fact that the story is set in high school, dealing with mostly high school drama, or if it’s really because the pieces seem to float in the background until the very end, while the focus on the first twenty or so chapters is purely on Ezra and Cassidy getting into a relationship. We do get bits and pieces of Cassidy hiding something, and although it serves as a reason to keep reading until her secrets are unravelled, it does nothing much to excite the reader and keep us turning the page.
We also get a sense of what is to come. Somehow, the fact that Cassidy’s brother is the cause of Ezra’s accident doesn’t come as a big surprise for the reader, but it does for the character. In terms of writing style, I have to admit that Schneider does have a way with words, and his inclusion of the concept of the panopticon was beautifully done. There is also a part in the book both humorous and informative as Cassidy discusses strange, exotic German words that do not have a direct translation in English. It might just make you want to search up German insults in your google search bar.
As for Cassidy and Ezra, their conversations seem to be more mature than what one would expect from high school students. But considering that both have been through their own accidents and tragedies, it is easily overlooked and accepted throughout the novel.
During the last few chapters, the writing and the plot get more interesting as we reach the climax of the story- Ezra and Cassidy’s relationship falls apart, secrets are revealed, and the worst part, old Cooper dies from a Coyote attack. All of the emotions that seem to be lacking in the first few chapters seem to come crashing down all at once in the last fifty or so pages of the book.
IV. Recommendation
Mostly a romance, tragedy and a journey to self- discovery, the book can hardly be grasped or appreciated by grade school students; however, it does prove enough a good read for people who are looking for something that isn’t quite as clichéd as John Green stories. It doesn’t necessarily have a dying character or a happy ending, but it has found a niche somewhere in between. Although not making it to my favourites, I would still recommend the book for reading. It has a very dragging plot, but it is interjected with some interesting ideas such as tumbleweed snowmen, treasure hunting, playground castles, Disneyland fireworks, severed heads and hotels with coffins as beds, our main characters try anything but to be ordinary and usually make fun of the social norms, while underneath still trying to be a part of what is going on. It can definitely be a book you curl up with when you have free time and want to relive your high school days and childhood romances or first loves.

BODY SHAMING AND IT’S EXTENSIVE EFFECTS
People talk about a society that’s open and more accepting.
But the truth is, we’re far from that. Just look at the way we talk about and objectify each other.
The truth is, society’s standards still haven’t changed. We still judge people based on outward appearances. Why else do we have a swimsuit portion in beauty pageants? Are you telling me that how you look in a swimsuit has something to do with your ability to answer a question or help in a charity?
I’ve heard stories of women starving themselves to please their mothers that want the perfect body image for them even when they are already achieving spectacular feats in their academics and their careers. I’ve met girls who are diagnosed with bulimia and/ or anorexia. Disorders that started out as them wanting their crushes to notice them, but progressed into something worse. It’s just as real as the STDs or depression that we promote awareness about. I’ve even heard of girls whose own family members pick on them for their size.
Some of you may think “It’s their fault for being so sensitive” or “Man why can’t they accept the truth?” Well, people deal with things very differently. Some may be able to handle it, but some do get pressured because of it. And doesn’t it say something about us if this is how we view beauty? I know other may have the intention of helping by mentioning a person’s weight, but their is a right way of going about it.
Women (or even men) shouldn’t want to starve themselves to look good. They should want to live a HEALTHY, REALISTIC and MANAGEABLE lifestyle regardless of whether or not that will help them achieve the model good looks that seem to be our standard for judging beauty.
At the beginning of this school year, my students asked me what worthwhile thing I wanted to focus on for the remainder of the year and, maybe, even the coming year. With that being said, I am focusing on promoting health and helping other people achieve it as well. That includes mental and spiritual health. People should be able to look in a mirror and feel good about themselves, regardless of what others may think.
Starting a series of vlogs to discuss different topics related to health. Got some interviews planned with experts, professionals psychologists, maybe some gym coaches and models all to talk about physical and mental health. Already in talks with some of them and I’m really excited for the plans to come to life. Stay tuned!

TITANS TRAILER
Everyone STOP. STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING RIGHT NOW.
I bet you’ve all seen the new trailer for the live action Teen Titans by now (simply titled Titans).
While other people have been having mixed reactions towards the events included in the trailer, I couldn’t be happier. And here’s why:
1. Loving that Dark Tone
Unlike majority of people, I actually like this dark tone that DC has been sporting in it’s shows and movies. Don’t get me wrong- I also love shows like The Flash and Supergirl, which is lighter and more children friendly.
But that’s the thing.
Teen Titans having this dark tone means it can also cater towards the more mature audiences of the DCU. Besides, the first season seems to be teasing that it will be centered around Raven’s character and Raven’s origins, so I’d understand the darker tone.
Besides, this isn’t Teen Titans Go! This is more in tune with the story arch from the original comics from the 1960′s, so it’s expected that it will be more adult.
2. DICK GRAYSON
Do I need any other reason to be happy?
As long as Dick Grayson is here, I’m also here. I loved his character in the comics, and I love his growth into the character of Nightwing.
A lot of people are saying that this Robin shown in the trailer reminds them more of Jason Todd rather than Dick Grayson, which is understandable. In the comics, Dick has always been the light that balances Batman’s darkness. Thus the bold, colorful costume.
However, I am happy about this angsty vibe, because it shows a different side of Dick and teases us about the issues he had with Batman after he decided to strike out on his own. In the comics, Superman gives him the idea of becoming Nightwing, so I’m curious whose going to give him the idea in the series.
I was a little taken aback with him using guns though, but maybe all will be explained in time.
When he said “Fuck Batman” all I could think about was “Bruce why you hurting my Robin???”
But then that’s just me, because I love Dick.
I also love that Brenton Thwaites will be bringing him to life. Super excited for that, especially after watching him in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Y’all can be as torn as you want, but I’m happy. This is like history in the making. Have we ever witnessed Robin’s transformation into Nightwing??? I think not.
3. THE BO STAFF
At some point in the trailer, we see Dick wielding the bo staff with great expertise. And my fangirl heart is very happy.
But.
I hope those things can also be separated and turned into eskrima sticks BECAUSE THAT’S DICK’S WEAPON AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED. The bo staff was more Tim’s thing, rather than Dick, and Jason opts for guns. We all know that. While Damianwas happy with his sword.
But Dick had eskrima sticks so *crosses fingers*
4. MY GIRL RAVEN
Raven has actually been one of my most favorite, DC female characters.
I love her backstory and I love how she struggles with her power and where it comes from.
In the trailer, we see her having sought out Dick and asking for his help. All throughout, we get vibes that they’re going to have a pretty tight relationship in the series.
In the comics, at one point, Raven tries to make a move on Dick. But considering the age difference here, I’m guessing it’s going to be more of a brother- sister relationship?
5. Beast Boy is here!
When talks of the show first started to happen, some were saying Beast Boy might not be part of the gang. After all, the special effects would cost a lot and would be difficult to do.
But I’m glad they changed their minds about it.
Beast Boy could be the one to bring the humor onto the show, much like he did in the animated version. In the comics, Beast Boy and Raven also had a relationship, but I’m not sure what’s going to happen here.
Can’t wait to see what jokes Beast Boy will serve up.
6. Star- freaking- fire
Well, there were a lot of issues regarding this one.
Especially when those set photos leaked on the internet.
I was worried there for a second, DC. Whiw. So glad the post- production looks much better. I’m also curious to see how Starfire will arrive into their lives. If they will be following much of the comics, Starfire should be crashing into their lives while their doing battle and kiss Dick to understand their language.
Somehow, that was not the vibe I was getting from the trailer.
And from Starfire’s get up, I’m not sensing the alien princess vibe either.
I do love what they did with those special effects though! Thank you to the creative minds behind that.
I JUST HAVE ONE QUESTION: WHERE IS BARBARA GORDON?
Is she going to be making an appearance? She’s a big part of Dick’s story, just as much as Batman is. And without Cybrog on the team (thanks to him being on JL) who’s going to be their techman? Or woman? The person in the chair? I mean, Dick is multi- talented, thanks from the training from Bruce. But he can’t lead the team and be the tech person sooooo... who?
PLEASE DC GIVE ME THIS.
In case you want to see it again, here’s the trailer!

CURRENT EVENTS: Modernization of the Philippine Public Transportation System and How it is Affecting Everyone
MNL, 2018- Ever since I was a little girl, I’d been riding the public transportation with my parents. We would take the bus or Metro Railway Transportation (MRT) when visiting my grandparents in Parañaque City. Being that we were all the way from Quezon City, public transportation provided a sure and affordable way for us to get from Point A to Point B every weekend.
As a writer, riding the public transport has also provided me with lots of materials to weave into my stories- whether they be fiction or not. Sometimes, trips proved to be relaxing despite the heavy traffic, while sometimes, it felt like I had entered the ninth circle of hell. But always, always, there was a story to tell.
I just didn’t think I would be telling this one.
What Started It All?
Our government is pushing for the modernization of our Public Utility Vehicles (PUV). Modernization, for them, means phasing out the old jeepneys or making sure that the ones we have pass a Motor Vehicle Inspection Test. The DoTr released a list that jeepney drivers need to follow for them to be allowed to keep operating. And in order to do this, they need to pay ridiculous amounts of money, when in reality, they barely earn enough to last the day. For them, the saying “isang kayod, isang tuka,” is very real.
Does this mean that the modernization of the PUVs is a bad thing?
No, of course not. The modernization of the PUVs is for passenger safety, lessen carbon emissions and improve the standard living of PUV drivers. If other reports are to be believed, the modernization of the PUV could also lead to decongested traffic. God knows enough of us have prayed for this to happen, and apparently, here lies one of the answers. The problem, however, is the rush to accomplish it and the rash planning that seems to be driving us.
Is it really for the people?
The government is telling us that this, in the long run, will be beneficial for the people. Commuters will have an easier time when travelling, our PUVs will hopefully be more environmental friendly and our public transportation system will be more professional. But, if it were really for the benefit of the people, shouldn’t that include the jeepney drivers? Even if they say that expenses will be subsidized, it doesn’t mean that the drivers will not be paying for it. They will pay. And they will need to pay a lot. But according to a jeepney driver, their average income per day is only at eight hundred pesos! Can you imagine that? That’s not even enough to cover gas expenses and feed their family. Truly, my heart breaks for them.
These people are responsible for getting us to work and to school each day. They sit behind the wheel for hours on end, driving to and fro in the tropical heat. And this is what they get? It’s no wonder they want to stage a protest. One of the students I was able to talk to had this to say: “They [the government] started the idea of modernization. But they did not include those who will be affected. Sino kinonsult nila? Not the drivers, but those who will supply the new vehicles. Yung mga mayayaman na lalo pang yayaman.”
Another student had this to add: “Actually, willing na nga magupgrade yug mga driver. Kaya lang mahal p*ta. Pinagkakakitaan pa sila!”
Even the youth is concerned with how our jeepney drivers are being treated. Not just because we feel for them, but because in the end, it affects us, too. Just look at the events of the past two days! Our responsibility, as students, is to go to school and learn. We had our exams scheduled this week. But because of everything going on in our country, even those of us who dislike politics or who are not experts in the matter are reacting. Instead of focusing on school, we are now tuned in to what is happening with our public transportation system- a system that many have agreed to be flawed, especially following the recent events.
The effect on the student body
Today, I woke up early like always, thinking I had school. As a fourth year education major, I also had to prepare for some lessons and tests I would be giving my students in practicum. Aside from that, I was excited to get my preliminary exams over with before Holy Week break.
Guess what? None of that happened.
And here are the difficulties I now face: As a student, my exams have been rescheduled. Apparently, I was not the only one. “My brother was supposed to have three exams yesterday and another two for today. But due to suspension, he now has a day within the week for 6 exams. He is currently divided on how he can cram 6 different contents, each worth 2 months of lectures and activities. I was to take two exams today but am informed that it will be taken on Thursday on the same day where I have 3 exams. Giving me a total of 5 exams almost with no break for rest or even recall of review for the next exam,” a third- year education student told me.
Faced with these odds, our mental and physical health are once again being challenged.
As a teacher, I have to figure out how I can make sure that my students learn the lessons dictated by the Curriculum Guide from the Department of Education. Currently, we are already behind by four weeks, and the students were forced to take home modules during the Holy Week break just to catch up. Am I now supposed to add to those modules when the kids should be relaxing and reflecting during their one week break?
It’s a very tight spot we’ve found ourselves in.
Drastic Changes
When I talked to another of my sources, she pointed out that the state of our country is getting worse, and not just in matters of public transportation. “These drastic changes will totally have an effect on us and on the younger generations. Just imagine how many will suffer if they continue to force the implementation of the modernized PUVs. Just imagine how many children will belong to broken families because of the absolute divorce bill. The state of our country in the current government is really depressing. I hope everyone stays strong and vigilant despite these disturbing changes.”
For others, being strong might mean a show of force. While for some, the solution to such drastic changes seem to be drastic answers as well. But what really is the solution?
How Will this End?
As expected, the opinions of the students I was able to talk to vary greatly.
Others believe that this dispute may be solved in a more civilized manner, by sitting down and talking about it in a diplomatic way. As suggested by some, PISTON should just sit with government representatives and discuss the changes together- though I am not an expert in politics, I was informed that the term for this is “lobbying”. However, as some would argue, sometimes what is agreed upon during these meetings is not always followed through.
Others believe that the protests would work if, in fact, jeepney drives nationwide do stop all their activities for a day. While it would cause a dent in their earnings, some believe that this would be a show of force that the people in power cannot ignore, especially since the past two days has been struggle enough.
As for the threat to the students, there is none. Not physically anyway. Whether there is a protest or not, the PUV drivers are rallying against the government and not students. It only hurts our education, because it is affecting our school. And if this doesn’t end soon, it will continue to hurt us.
And in the end, there will be no one left to benefit from this supposedly beneficial modernization.
The Guys of Shadowhunters Prove Why They’re the Hottest Supernatural Stars
KaraMel is No Longer Sweet : Season 3, Episode 7 Review
I have been waiting for a week to watch Supergirl’s latest episode. Unlike Arrow, Flash or Gotham, I can’t go a week without catching the new episode. And this one was supposed to be extra special because Mon- El was going to be back!
And he was... with his new freaking wife! I mean, is it just me or do the writers of Supergirl not want Kara to be happy? Because I’m not happy. And I know other fans aren’t either. It hurt to watch Mon- El kissing someone who is not Kara after everything that happened, okay. My feelings were invested in the both of them. I can only imagine how Kara felt (brb going to pick up the pieces of my broken heart on the floor)
This has taught me one thing, though. That no matter how much of a good person you are, no matter how much you give and give to others and try to be strong and love yourself, sometimes, there is still no happy ending. Even Supergirl doesn’t always get the guy. Makes me wonder what I’m going to do with my life now that another ship has sunk.
On Sam’s part, I don’t really think she knows what she’s doing or what she was getting into. I could tell that the writers adapted much of Clark’s own experience and made it hers. I was only left wondering how she grew up and went through life without finding out about her powers. I love her line though. “I’m like Supergirl!” Her enthusiasm was cute, but honey, there is only one Supergirl.
Hopefully, next week’s episode will be better and will give us more insight into Reign and *gags* Imra.

THOR: RAGNAROK- THE PERFECT ENDING
I know most of you have probably seen Thor: Ragnarok by now, but for those of you that haven’t, you should probably go see it while you still can!
I have to say, this is by far, the best Thor movie I’ve seen. And if it happens to be the last, well, I don’t mind (brb crying in a corner). But really. If this is the last Thor movie, it would serve as the perfect ending to the franchise.
I have always been a fan of Thor. No, it’s not because of Chris Hemsworth’s drool- worthy everything. It might be partly because of Tom Hiddleston, but mostly, mostly, it was actually my love for mythologies that made me appreciate it. As a lover of literature, mythologies have always been my favourite. And there’s so little about Norse mythology, that I was glad it got a chance to be made into such a spectacular, phenomenal movie, starring such talented actors.
With that being said, let’s delve into everything there is to love and look forward to when it comes to Thor.
(Warning: as always, spoilers ahead)
1. THE HUMOR
I did read an article stating that Tom Hiddleston admitted this would be the funniest Thor ever (I am using a lot of superlatives, I know. It’s just that great!)
And well, he wasn’t lying.
See, Chris Hemsworth is this unfairly, annoyingly perfect human being. I mean, he looks like a god, he can act, he can sing, he is a great dad to his kids, and it turns out, he can be funny. Countless interviews and even that little segment he did where Thor was taking a break with Darryl (see youtube video here, if you haven’t already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_mizUMlvUc)
So yeah, the beginning of the movie already had me laughing. (*spoiler content*) Thor was trapped in a cage talking to a skeleton I was like “wtf?” But what did it for me was when he was being interrogated by that fiery dude (don’t know how to spell his name) and he was swinging on the chain Oh.My.God. You would have to have watched it to understand.
The chain was rotating him around and every time he had his back to the evil dude, he would be like “Hold on.” And “I swear to God, I’m not doing this. It’s doing this on its own.” And it turns out, a lot of it was improvised. So bless you, Chris Hemsworth for your near perfection and humor.
Of course, Tom Hiddleston also had his funny moments. One was when he was kidnapped by the great wizard, Dr. Strange. When he came out of the portal, he was like, “I’ve been falling for thirty minutes!” And I’m sure we’ve all seen the clip where Hela goes “Kneel.” And Loki is just like, “who dafuq does this bitch thinks she is? That’s my line!”
Also, ALSO! When Hulk comes out- Loki’s reaction is just pricless- omfg! You guys, you have got to love Tom Hiddleston for all the sass and attitude and facial expressions he can fit in Loki’s character.
2. THE CAST
Thor brings back familiar faces like Loki, Heimdall and *surprise, surprise* Odin. We even get a scene of Volstagg and Fandral there. But, we also have a slew of new characters. One, being Surtur (big, fiery dude I was talking about.) We also have big, bad Hela. And of course, Valkyrie.
Before we talk about the new characters, let’s talk about the old ones.
Loki. Loki. Loki. He has got to be my most favourite villain of all time. At the beginning of the movie, he is living it up as Odin and even builds a statue of himself. Of course, Thor (even though he isn’t the smartest Avenger) eventually figures it out. They have a somewhat happy reunion, before Thor asks for Odin.
Odin has been on Earth for some time, stripped of his power. He ends up in Norway (big nod to Norse mythology right there) and ends up dying in a sprinkle of golden little lights. Before he dies, he is somewhat able to explain about Hela ( who we’ll talk about later). But Odin, being Odin, he doesn’t stay dead and still appears to Thor in somewhat weird and creepy visions, and he’s sassy too. He goes like “Are you the god of hammers?” Well, excuse you All Father
Volstagg and Fandral. This is the part I do not like of the film. They were such lovable, lovable characters and Hela killed them without blinking. Like wtf? They survived this long only to die like that? WHY MARVEL? WHYYYYY. I mean, Pietro’s death is still fresh!!!
Heimdall. Our watcher has turned into some sort of Asgardian vigilante. He’s running from the law after what he did in Thor: The Dark World, but he also keeps the citizens of Asgard safe while Loki and Thor are stuck on the other side of the universe. Good job, Heimdall! You deserve a raise.
And now *drum roll*
THE BIG BAD. Hela. She is this combination of deadly (ugh duh goddess of death), jealous and powerful. Not really great for Thor, whose hammer is also destroyed by her. And to top it all off, she is the first born, not him. Ouch. Talk about living a lie. See, Cate Blanchett does a great job of playing this death goddess who revels in destruction and killing, but I think it’s the way that Hela is written that doesn’t really do it for me. She’s just so full of hate and wants to take over the nine realms. She is evil to the core, and so, there’s not much going on besides her being a powerful enemy. Sadly, compared to Loki and other villains, her character falls flat. I mean, even Ultron- who was a robot- had some twisted reasoning to all his evilness. At least she had a dog. I want one. All that aside, Cate Blanchett is still gorgeous and talented and I love her!
Valkyrie. I was impressed with her fighting skills, and even though she was drunk, she still won. Way to go, girl! She also feels a lot like a female Thor to me, and maybe that’s why they’ll end up together? I don’t know, but I think that’s where Marvel’s heading with these two, especially since Thor and Jane broke up. (Ikr! Just like that?! After everything that happened in The Dark World?) Still, in the comics, they did get together at times, so it’s not that surprising if the writers go there.
Surtur. Big, bad fiery dude. And when I say big, I do mean big. He is prophesised to destroy Asgard and bring about Ragnarok, when he grows to be as big as a mountain. See, but I’m not telling you if he succeeds. That, you’ll have to see in the movie.
3. THE BROMANCE IS REAL
The thing I’ve always loved about Thor movies is the relationship between Loki and Thor. It’s so real and raw and funny. They really capture how siblings act irl. At least, that’s how me and my brother are. I just assume most people can relate. I love how Thor has finally, finally learned, that Loki will always try to get the best of him. I also love how Loki will come to his brother’s aid no matter their differences. In the end of the movie, when Thor is sitting in his “throne”, I’m happy to see Loki standing there beside him. And that scene in the room! Where Thor was like “If you were here, I might actually give you a hug” and Loki catches whatever Thor throws at him because he is there! WAHHHH MY FANGIRL HEART
4. THOR’S TRUE POWER
Even though Odin could’ve put it nicely instead of being like “Are you the god of hammers?” (see now, I know where Loki gets all his sass from. It wasn’t spending all that time with Frigga) It’s true that Thor’s power doesn’t come from the hammer. Still, Mjolnir was a character all on it’s own. I’m gonna miss that hammer. My most favourite parts of the movie were when Thor used his powers without the hammer. It was so cool seeing his eyes go all blue and lightning just zapping off his body. His fight scene with the Hulk was e.p.i.c. EPIC.
He would’ve won if it wasn’t for that cheating Grandmaster! Seriously, dude? And then Thor also zaps Hela with a hella big blast and she flies out the window. DAMN. DAMN BRO. Thor kicks ass without that hammer. I wonder if it’ll be like that in Infinity Wars and what the reactions of his fellow Avengers might be. *insert smirk*
There were other great parts of the movie- the other gladiators wanting a revolution, Korg (omg Korg, I love him. And the fact that he is voiced by the director makes it even funnier). And the end credits! Goosebumps! I love Thor. I really wish this wasn’t the last movie. But right now, I’m really, reallyyyy looking forward to Infinity Wars.
You don’t know me. You just know that I drink too much coffee but you never ask why I’m always tired.

WONDER WOMAN: MORE THAN WONDERFUL
Ever since the first trailer came out, I could not stop waiting for this movie. Finally, on June 1st, it arrived in cinemas.
And even without a night of sleep, I pulled my closest friends to the theater to go see it. What I found? A movie that did not disappoint. Most people always disagree with me when I say I am a DC fan. Seriously? Why do they always have to compare to Marvel? Can’t we all just appreciate the superhero movies equally?
With that being said, let’s take a look at everything I loved about Wonder Woman.
*Warning: Spoilers ahead. *
1. LITTLE DIANA
Bless this beautiful, beautiful child. She did a great job of playing a young Diana. I think the audience gave a collective, “Awww” when she appeared. With her doing cute little kicks and punches, it just added to the overall cuteness. But then she gives you this smirk and you know that the Princess of the Amazons is also a stubborn, sassy little girl who knows what she wants and goes after it.
2. EPIC FIGHT SCENES
The trailer alone showed some great potential in the fight department, but actually seeing everything on the big screen gives you this whole new feeling! It’s the “holy-shit- I- can’t- breathe” feeling. The kind where you stare with eyes wide open because you’re afraid that if you blink, you’re gonna miss something cool. The first few minutes of the movie, with the amazon warriors fighting off Germans on the shores of Themyscira (thank you, Steve) was amazing! We also see Queen Hippolyta and Antiope in action. (side note: my fave part would have to be her jumping onto a make shift shield that Steve grabbed and killing a sniper, taking down the whole top of the church doing so).
Bruce got nothing on that lasso.
3. Steve Trevor
I love Chris Pine. I have loved him ever since he came out in “Princess Diaries 2” and “Just My Luck”, when I was still a teenager in high school. And then he went and became Captain Kirk in Star Trek, and my fangirl heart could not help but love him more. Now, he has proven again how great he is by playing the charming, fearless, and disobedient Captain Steve Trevor.
I’m so glad he chose to do this over Green Lantern! He was great when they were using the Lasso of Truth on him, but the funniest part for me was when Diana dropped by while he was taking a bath.
Diana: Are you a prime example of the average man? (or something like that)
Steve: No, I’m above average.
4. Gal Gadot
Unlike most people, I had nothing against Gal (or her allegedly small boobs *insert snort*) when she was first cast as Wonder Woman. Honestly, I was more concerned with how the story would go, but damn. She proved everyone wrong. She played the role perfectly. Perfectly. I am not joking. I cannot imagine anyone else who would’ve done a spectacular job as her. (And take note, she was pregnant whilst shooting this).
She could be fierce, emotional, humorous. She lighted up the screen, man. Figuratively and literally. And yes, she rocked that costume! Ugh that costume! At first, I was skeptical. After all, I am a big fun of the comics, and I sometimes hate it when they change these iconic things about characters (e.g. Barry Allen not being blonde in the TV series or the movie). But I came to love it. It showed more of her Amazonian roots than her iconic outfit in the animated series before.
5. No Man’s Land
This was the best scene/ segment of the movie for me. I had goosebumps watching her climb up to No Man’s Land. Add that to the fact that Steve tells her the soldiers have been there for nearly a year and haven’t gain an inch, yet she just strolls up there like is a fcking field of lilies and is dodging bullets better than The Matrix. My heart. My fangirl heart.
Everything about it was so right. You have these bleak, grey landscape and yet Wonder Woman is wearing such vibrant colors. Then there are these slow- motion sequence where she’s blocking the bullets like some sort of freaking Jedi. And her shield seems to like glow while she’s getting hit with a machine gun and and and she’s dodging those bombs like they’re nothing. Nothingggggg. Then everyone else follows her and charges at the enemies. And I’m just sitting there like:
Up to now, my feels are still overwhelming. The story was great, the cast was great AND THE DIRECTOR, PATTY JENKINS. YOU ARE A BLESSING FROM GOD. I cannot wait for the Justice League movie. DC got this right, and hopefully, they keep getting it right.

Reading books is a major key to success. The mega-rich and successful like Bill Gates and Elon Musk devote extraordinary amounts of their time to reading. Musk even attributes his knowledge of how to build rockets to his reading repertoire, and studies have proven that reading can reduce stress, increase focus, and improve long- and short-term memory.
The benefits of flexing your reading muscles are clear. But reading is time-consuming — and as a busy professional, it’s almost impossible to both find the time to read and actually stay focused enough to reap the benefits when deadlines start piling up.
Thankfully, experts at Harvard Business Review (along with a few others) have discovered some tips and tricks to ensure that you not only make reading a daily habit, but that you‘re able to radically increase the amount you read and the benefits you reap.
