Hamilton Performance
I feel like people are missing something really key that happened in the 2016 Tonys performance.
Lin changed one word. But that’s all it took to change the meaning of the performance and the Tonys.
“Weapon with my hands.”
They didn’t just take out the muskets to show solidarity, Lin is trying to teach us that what we do, say and write will change perspective for generations to come. He’s showing us how we don’t need a gun or violence to fight for what we believe in. Like Alexander, we have our hands. Our writing. Our words are immortalised when we write, no matter who takes us away. The massacre in Orlando has devastated our country, but why stay silent? Why give them what they want and silence ourselves? We need to make something that is immortalised. Teach generations that come that you can take away our loved ones, but you can NEVER take our words.
no offense but let’s say that is what he meant:
why should a straight cis person be telling LGBT people that we need to be brave, more than others, and immortal.
yeah, it’s sad we’re afraid but of course we are and we always have been. just existing is brave enough, and it’s okay to not use our words and immortalize ourselves. it’s okay to be afraid because just existing as LGBT is brave.
if the OP is LGBT, then whatever, but people reblogging this need to be careful because oppressed groups are always told we have to be stronger and braver than our oppressors.
Hi, OP here!
Just gonna start off with I'm a non-binary lesbian, so LgbT :)
Now I'm going to say: in /that/ point of time. On /that/ day, after /that/ event LGBT people had to be more brave than others. What happened in the LGBT community hurt minorities and majorities alike. When Lin wrote that, he knew that we needed to be brave. There were kids (like me) with parents saying the people deserved it. We /needed/ to be more brave at that point. There were families who, at that point and now, needed to be more brave than many people.
Another thing I'm going to point out: yes, Lin has a wife. Yes, he's never stated otherwise, BUT on tumblr we always promote not assuming sexualities, not assuming genders. Maybe Lin is a closeted bisexual man. For all we know he's non-binary. Just because he is 34 married and has a kid, doesn't mean we can assume his identity. At least not on tumblr, so let's stop being so hypocritical and straight up calling him 'straight cis'.
And if he is? So what? So /what/? People hate the 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' notion, but what was he to do? His best friend is gay. He was hurting because, as people conveniently forget, it was a Latinx night at that bar. They were his people. They were the world's people. Allies are allowed to speak out. Give them shit about it is how you make a homophobe. "An LGBT person attacked me for doing something nice so I'm not gonna help LGBT people any more."
Its not a war on which minority has it worst. Real life isn't tumblr. Real life is people dying. People getting hurt because mommy didn't come home last night. Real life isn't a freaking hashtag that can be edited and deleted. There's a point in time where we ALL need to be just as brave as one another. Not braver. Just brave. There's no need for supurlatives in real life. In real life we aren't just writing. We're people. People can stick to adjectives. An important adjective being "brave".
We Are Not Them, But We Stand With Them
We braid our hair in to styles that we did not create and we call it 'beautiful'. We dye our skin with an artificial spray and we call it 'sun kissed'. We spend hundred of dollars shipping garbs from another country and we call it 'slaying'. We rap along to our favourite artists and call it 'impressive'. We pass the girl in the street, crying over the death of her father and we say 'get over it' We watch the teacher pick on the little boy wearing the hoodie and we call him 'a thug'. We roll our eyes when they ask for equal rights and we shout 'All Lives Matter'. We stand and watch as their fathers, their brothers, their loved ones are shot and murdered by the very people who were supposed to protect them, and we say nothing. We try so hard to be like them, and dress like them, and act like them, because we know that they are beautiful; we know that they are stronger than we could ever hope to be. We are not black, but that does not mean we can't support those who are. We heed to support our black brothers and sisters. God knows they need it.
Fuck Black Lives Matter
I generally try to refrain from swearing on this blog, but seriously, fuck BLM. Everything about this movement is repulsive.
But I won’t counteract it by saying All Lives Matter. If you, on your own, cannot see that the lives of innocent people regardless of race matter, and that NO RACE IS BETTER OR MORE WORTHY THAN ANOTHER, then you are an utter piece of shit.
Where was the invisible 'only'. I might make a missing poster because I really can't find the 'only' in front of 'black lives matter'.
My dearest, dearest white person,
Imagine there is two houses, one is on fire, one is not.
The fire brigade get there and start hosing down the house that isn't on fire, talking about how all houses matter.
Meanwhile in the burning house, people are dying because of the fire brigades ignorance.
Maybe one day you will realise that you, Miss. Privileged, are the fire brigade in this analogy.
IM SCREAMING- MY FRIEND JUST SENT THIS TO ME REBLOG IF YOU HAVE HAMILARIA
@linmanuel
PLS.. u all might disagree here but i know i cant be the only one…………… like….. who hates hamilton??????????
FUCK the founding fathers. FUCK THE FOUNDING FATHERS… GENOCIDAL RACIST DISGUSTING PIECES OF GARBAGE.. LIKE… idk. please… i do Not. give A Fuck.. like who is PLAYING the founding fathers.. i dont care if its people of color playing the founding fathers i dont care if it is Jesus Christ Himself Risen From The Dead playing the founding fucking fathers dont erase what they did or glorify them.. ever.. just stop it
also i see this quote from hamilton passed around a lot a… “Immigrants- we get the job done.”
BUT LIKE… IMMIGRANTS? REALLY? EVIL WHITE PEOPLE WHO STOLE LAND AND BRUTALIZED AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE… WHO OWNED SLAVES.. WHO WERE DISGUSTING AS HUMAN BEINGS.. like we’re gonna call that immigration???? its called white settlers.. colonizers.. please For Gods Sake
(and what the fuck is “the job” that these “””””””immigrants”””””” did? like.. white supremacy? brutal horrifying genocide? erasure and subjugation and suppression and violence that continues to this day over multiple centuries? mayhaps? no? ok)
Please.. Tell me if theres something im missing.. something im not understanding about this…. like this.. can’t be as bad as im making it out to be if so many people like it like… can it????????????
Okay here are the things you don’t understand, my dude:
• In no way are the founding fathers glorified. In the plot Thomas Jefferson is treated like Donald Trump would be in a Hillary Clinton musical. He is an ass. He is portrayed as an ass. The whole first scene of act 2 is him being an ass to his slaves. Everyone hates him. Even our resident good guy is portrayed as an irrational ass. Which he was. His amazing work is glorified, not his being an… Wait for it… Ass.
• Immigrants- Alexander Hamilton and Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette were as immigrant as they come. Alexander showed up to America five years earlier and Lafayette around that time too. That’s not colonisation or being a “white settler”, that is immigration™. You wouldn’t call a French man coming over to the US in this day and age a white settler, so Alexander and Lafayette are also not.
• The job- I love the job. The job is wonderful. You’re thinking about the wrong kind of job if you’re thinking about genocide, my dude, because the job was freeing America from the British rules which were basically killing and starving Americans. Also these particular immigrants (see: [2]) had another wonderful job- supporting their friend, Mister John Laurens, release and support slaves. There was a slave who took Lafayette’s name because the job worked so well. Also, we’re all only paying like 40% taxes now (sweats nervously), and it all goes back in to our economy (see: politicians bank accounts).
Overall, complaining about Hamilton (and especially this line in Hamilton like, really?) Is like complaining about Donald Trump supporting trans™ people using the bathroom that suits their identity. Like… Yeah, you got the right person (or group in this case) to complain about, just not the right topic. It highlights the problems of that particular topic (like really, if even DONALD TRUMP can see they should be allowed… C'mon…)
The founding fathers were assholes, not disputing that, but actually Hamilton is a good thing because it highlights their problems and makes people more aware of them, and stops schools from glorifying them.
*runs away from angry mob sure to follow*
I'm sorry but historically Maria Reynolds was an abused and battered woman desperately trying to get her child and herself out of a shitty situation. She had so little formal education she could barely even write her own name. Maria Reynolds is the victim here historically. It is portrayed very different in the musical, because it's from Hamilton's perspective. Of course it will be blaming her for the whole thing. I don't mean to be argumentative but this is close to modern victim blaming.
I meanApparently there is actually a “Musical Canon,” in which Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy are the only Schuyler children, Burr is less of an asshole, and other stuff I guess. It doesn’t surprise me that Maria would be treated differently in the canon as opposed to irl.Also that pretty terrible ;-;
Actually I disagree with the fact that Maria is victim blamed. The whole way through Say No To This, both when I listened to and watched it, I always felt like it was Hamilton's fault.
Alexander is constantly singing why can't I say no to this. It never says she forced him, it fully describes her situation and when Eliza sings burn she uses words like "girl" and says "you brought this girl in to our bed".
The only time she's victim shamed is by her husband and that acts as another reason for us to feel bad for her because he dehumanises her.
The whole way through she looks lost and scared, and when she begs him she's on her knees and looks so scared. Another thing is Hamilton always approaches her, or pulls her go him.
I think the way Lin wrote it and how Tommy directed it stops "modern victim shaming", and actually treats her with a lot of respect.

@ ham fans that love bumping guns and ships but will turn their nose up at kanye, jay, or any other rapper in the game: fuck you. you can’t grab hold to one part of a genre and be like “this is my shit!11!!!!! i know so much about rap!1!1!!!!!” and then turn around and trash on everything else in said genre. it’d be different to be like “i like hamilton, and certain rappers, but all of it isn’t for me.” cause like, that’s understandable, that’s a valid opinion and everyone is like that. but to straight up say that you only like hamilton rap cause it’s not about “being hardcore and fucking bitches” which is fucking stupid cause yorktown goes hard as fuck and say no to this is literally hamilton cheating on his wife you dumbass is yes indeed, very racist because rap is a genre made by black people and is still deeply rooted into the black community. also you’re a shitty fan cause if you only listen to hamilton rap but no other rap then you might as well stop listening to ham cause daveed’s solo stuff and rap group goes hard as fuck and tonight is a fucking bop lmao see y’all on the other side of the war
At the risk of being maybe torn apart for this, I have to say, I disagree with this post. I deeply respect rap culture or the culture of any music movement, where it came from, and the stories it is trying to tell etc. That being said. Do I like rap or listen to it? No. Do I like Guns and Ships? Yeah. Does that mean in the future I won’t discover another rapper or song in rap that I like? Who knows. Maybe it’ll happen. But saying “fuck you” because I have in fact “grabbed on to one part of the genre” and so far, only that one, is absurd to me. I like musicals. I like musicals because they are musicals, regardless of their musical sub genre.
For example:
Do I like to listen to “A Heart Full of Love” from Les Mis?
Yes.
Sopranos in straight opera?
No.
Do I like Rent? Next to Normal?
Absolutely.
Do I like Rock?
Hell no.
9 to 5?
Yes!
Country?
Kill me.
Once?
Love.
Indie Guitar music?
Nah.
My “genre” is musical theatre. My entire itunes is comprised of musicals. I’m not kidding. And my musical theatre tastes include broad and diverse categories that include jutebox musicals, rock, jazz, indie, pop, and yes, in fact, rap. I do not need to be attacked for not liking or listening to anything else in that subcategory. If I want to listen to Guns and Ships because it is in a musical I happen to like, and then go on to listen to fricken Newsies, or Miss Saigon, or Fiddler on the Fricken Roof, then let me do that in peace.
Thank you.
lmaooooo shut up!!! the entitlement in this post is so ugly!! why you responding to it like it’s you who is personally being addressed? “i don’t need to be attacked” ???? who are you ???
this post is specifically about hamilton fans who CONSCIOUSLY talk badly about rap outside of hamilton and then put the musical on a pedestal as if it’s better because it’s more educated or something!! shut up!!! if it doesn’t apply to you no one cares!! if this is some weird convoluted way to say you’re lowkey racist then!!! shut!!! up!!! like!!! kay did not make this post for you!
tag urself im “fiddler on the fricken roof” and “i deeply respect rap culture”
Honestly I understand the second person’s opinions (which are in no way racist as they literally had no aspect of race in their argument). If you’re going to post something controversial @actualjohnlaurens then you have to expect for someone to reply and disagree with you, and if you’re going to be on tumblr you need to accept that. I do not tend to like rap music. I like Cipping because I find their work ingenuitive and I also find Daveed’s voice calming. I like rap elements to TØP because I like Tyler’s voice and because its a mixture of rap and other genders (hey that’s familiar, I wonder what else is a mixture) But I don’t like rap music much. However I LOVE Hamilton. Mainly because like @watching-what-happens I love musical theatre. With Hamilton it is a Broadway show that represents my people! And before you point me in the direction of eclipsed and shows like that, I like them too. As well as this you have to admit that Hamilton is different to rap. The reason I like Hamilton rap is because, unlike other rap, I can imagine staging and dances and actions and faces, unlike in non-musical raps where I can’t imagine anything. I like to think what technique or lighting I could use for satisfied or if Daveed could do a dance during guns and ships. Ireally can’t imagine Kanye on a stage using stylism to tell a story. If you’re using the genre argument you don’t seem to appreciate Hamilton is musical theatre, so to like Hamilton and to say its your thing you need to like every single musical ever, cause otherwise you’re not appreciating Lin’s work. And if you dare call this post entitled or racist then I will literally fight you because my main reason for liking Hamilton is its created and staring someone who is from Puerto Rico, and is Latinx like me. Rant over.
can you imagine hating black musicians this much
no but for real im guessing you expect a mature response and stuff so ill try to deliver
1. what is controversial about saying that a black-originated musical genre getting more hate than all the other genres is suspicious
2. i don’t know what your purpose with the 21 pilots thing is because the entire band is white and honestly that doesn’t help prove your point
3. if you can’t imagine anything with non-musical rap, please consider that the issue is not the music, but that you have a problem imagining it. because it seems like fans of rap can see exactly what it means
4. u can’t imagine… kanye west…. using stylism…. on stage….. to tell a story. oh ymg od. that is quite the dilemma. here. let me…. assist. here it is ladies and gentlemen and others https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuhl6Ji5zHM
what could it be? could it…. no….. it can’t BE….. KANYE WEST USING STYLISM ON STAGE TO TELL A STORY I’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT I THINK I MIGHT IMPLODE
5. did u not hear @actualjohnlaurens when she said “this post is specifically about hamilton fans who CONSCIOUSLY talk badly about rap outside of hamilton and then put the musical on a pedestal as if it’s better because it’s more educated” this isn’t about you ok… just pls….. stop
6. you don’t have to like rap music. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE RAP MUSIC. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE RAP MUSIC. however, don’t be like “lol im not like other people with their gangsta rap and drugs and bitches im listening 2 historically-enlightened rap musicals about slave-owning racists” OR “lol hamilton bumps up my street cred im sooooo gangster because obviously everything created by poc is definitely meant to be about crime and drugs and the ghetto!”
ok? ok. that was not very hard.
none of what YOU’RE DOING is inherently racist but it IS entitled, because you’re assuming that this shit is about you. don’t even trip. it isn’t.
also, as a pointer, next time don’t say “wow i love this white group with rap influences” and then immediately follow it with “i can’t imagine kanye west telling a story” because it sounds really….. really terrible
This would have upset me more if I were white 😑 I’m sorry for liking white music my friend, it must be really upsetting to you that people like white music, so I apologise. What I’m trying to say is I like their music as it isn’t ridiculously rap-esque. I like how Tyler’s voice sounds. Sue me for liking the white guy.
I’m not assuming this is about me, my friend. I’m using my voice to cast my opinion on the post because this is the land of the free, after all.
And literally admitting that I enjoy a white group and then saying something completely different about a black guy is not me insulting the black guy? I made TWO SEPERATE POINTS about people with contrasting skin colors and automatically makes me wrong because woa… Two different skin colors in the same post??? No way, that can’t happen!!!1!1
And please don’t fault the autistic girl for struggling imagining things. I can imagine lighting and staging, not whatever the living hell rap artists do when they perform, swing as I’ve never seen rap artists perform, yet have studied musical theatre?
There is no entitlement in this post whatsoever. I do not believe this post is about me. What you’re claiming is if you stand up for yourself you’re acting entitled and basically like an ass. So you can’t stand up for yourself or others now? Dude this is tumblr, you can’t get but hurt every time someone voices their oponions.
the whole problem with your 21 pilots v kanye argument is that you uplifted a group that has taken a genre created for and by black people but then turned around and said that you couldn’t imagine a man that changed the rap game using his music to convey stories and make valid points. so yeah, that’s very ignorant of you.
no one said that you can’t like them. literally nowhere in that post does it say that. but you took it to the head. that was what was entitled of you.
As I've just said while sorting it out with @transaaronburr that I regret saying that as I was rather blind to the side of the argument that was racial if you know what I mean? I understand they were not a good example, but the reason I used them is because they aren't a rap group but incorporate rap and I'm not even making sense to myself. Basically I was stupid to involve them, but I stand by my other points and opinions.

Rant over.
