another casual wednesday date. the only free-day he had before championship practice started. its been six months since he posted that picture of you on the sidelines. no kissing, no hugging, definitely not dating, just casual connection and conversation.
you wondered, why hadn't he tried to kiss you yet? it's been six months. were you not enough for him? too much? you pondered if he was losing infatuation in your relationship— or whatever this was.
the season was almost over, what if he changed his mind? what if he wasn't as serious about this as you were? you worried constantly, it kept you up at night. finn started to notice, you had a date tonight. normally you would be giggly and lovestruck, but today something was different. you sat in your side of the booth, fiddling with your thumbs, not paying attention to whatever nerdy shit finn was rambling on about.
"actually emperor palpatine wasn't all that bad when you really look at the movies, i mean-" he cuts himself off. he's never seen you like this before, you were always shy but never with him. "what's wrong?" he questions. "nothing! sorry i just- uhm- zoned out." you stutter, still looking down at your feet.
"something is wrong. tell me." he says sternly. "it's nothing im just-" you sigh. "just what?" a tear falls down your face, he softens a bit. "heyheyhey don't cry. please. fuck." he reaches out to touch your hand, you flinch. "i think i should leave." you sob. "what, why?" he asks.
"im sorry." you look at him finally, your eyes sunken in and teary. "for what?" you get up from the booth, crying and distraught. what hurt finn the most was you wouldn't tell him anything. weeks went by, almost a month.
you hadn't been to work in forever. too busy crying in your apartment about what you'd done. you always did this. you got attached and when you didn't get the attention you wanted, you distanced yourself without reason.
you've been sitting in your apartment. confused. crying. contemplating. finn was sitting in his condo, trying to drown out his feelings with weed, alcohol, anything he could do to numb the pain. he couldn't do this to himself. you didn't like it when he'd drink, or smoked. you always lectured him about how it "wasn't good for him." and threatened to tell his coach on him.
he would text you at least once a week, a "hey i miss you." or "saw lilies today, your favorite right?" he sat and waited, the messages not delivering. you'd blocked him. finn started to wonder if he saw something that was never there.
soon, the championship game came, it was raining. finn hadn't posted on instagram since that night at the restaurant, his media presence dwindling over the past thirty or so days. from the moment you walked into the stadium, you saw his face. cold and emotionless, you couldn't believe you let yourself do this to him. to someone you love.
the 3rd inning. you were in the stands, hair completely soaked, your shirt wet, and the only thing shielding you from the elements was the brown leather jacket finn gave you after it started to rain during your walk home from your date.
the 7th inning. your eyes are locked on finn, lost in your own thoughts. his eyes found you in the stands, fuck. he was supposed to be hitting the ball. he tears his eyes away from yours, hitting the ball. you shiver from the cold rain, eyes filling with tears as the crowd erupts in cheer as he hits a home run. maybe this was over.
the 9th inning. both teams are tied. finn is batting the winning ball of the game. he's in position, ready to hit the ball. your eyes lock again. his stance falters. he tries to focus up, but the constant screams of "hit the fucking ball wolfhard!" from his coach aren't helping.
he hits the ball, you hold your breath. he's running for home base and your heart is racing. your breathing intensifies as he nears a home run. the moment his feet plant on the platform, you exhale. his teammates rush at him, praising, and crowding him.
you stand up, heading to the spot in the lowest stand where you and finn would always meet after practice. you stood there waiting for him, he runs to where you stand.
you immediately apologize. "Im so sorry i just- we never had a label, a hug, a kiss or-" his eyes search your face before he kisses you. you freeze up, you feel like your on cloud nine. you don't remember how to do anything but kiss him back, his hands cup your face.
the crowd erupts in screams and cheers as the stadium shows you on the kiss cam. you finally pull apart breathless, he smiles to all of the audience, pulling you close to him.
"i love you." he whispers, you smile."i love you too finn." maybe this photography job payed off better than you thought it would.
