All in all this is just a really awesome piece that I could deconstruct for many days. You present a beautiful faithfulness to Inferno, The Lesser Key of Solomon, and related works but you're not afraid to take things in a bold new direction. You're easily on par with some of the most notable demon related authors on the wiki. A piece of Lilith embedded itself inside Arthur. She definitely went with him.
Idk, maybe I’m tying this into my theory that Nyarlathotep and Lilith are Arthur and Faroe after having been transmogrified by their time in the Dark World. But “sewn into him in a way I didn’t know was possible” sounds a lot like the relationship between a parent and their child.

Remember back when Lilith was going through his memories? Arthur was sobbing because he was enjoying the freedom now that Faroe was gone, and he was racked with guilt, because he thought it meant he might be happy that his daughter was dead?
Like he loved his daughter but also resented her a bit? Like maybe he would enjoy his life if didn’t have to live with the pain? Like maybe he could just enjoy life if there was no suffering? And his daughter was stopping him from experiencing that???????
When he is stripped of all of his humanity, Arthur is Nyarlathotep.

My reaction to Lillith’s death
No but like guys. This episode made me like. 20x more insane about Kayne. He’s so fucking delusional. I want to shake him around and study him in a sterile environment and run experiments on him. He is soooooo unstable and i am sooo not normal about it
It’s 4am and tonight’s epiphany is that KAYNE WAS RIGHT. Lilith IS fucking with him. She is fully capable of controlling Arthur and making him do her bidding. It’s a bit convenient that his solution for Scratch was to send her back to Lilith, isn’t it?
I think Kayne is actually incapable of controlling him, or affecting his timeline outside of fixed, predestined events, and that is something that’s never happened to him before.
Also, there is at least one very good potential reason that Kayne can’t see his future.
It’s 5am, and having listened to episode 47 I have some new pet theories.
The first is that Kayne had some kind of bet going with Lilith to see if he could get Arthur to the Graystone before she could free Scratch and become whole again.
My second theory is that this was a gambit, and that Kayne is now fucking with her. Having lulled Lilith into a false sense of security, Kayne made a second bet with her: a race to retrieve the Blackstone, one involving his ability to manipulate Arthur, potentially without her hypnotic powers in order to level the playing field.
My third theory is that Frank, Henry and Roland pulled off some time fuckery, launched the stone to 13th century England, into a different dimension, and hid it from the elder gods so that only another human could find it. It’s quite possible that the man with the stitched mouth is one of them. I don’t think John knows what any of them look like.
Arthur is impervious to attempts by the elder gods to exert brute force in order to enact their will. It’s almost like he has his own little Hand of Malevolence protecting him. (I can only assume this little hand belongs to a particular tiny human. This is extremely cute, Harlan. 10/10. No notes.) It’s possible this is why Kayne single-handedly decimated the city of Carcosa: half to intimidate an unpredictable being immune to his violence, half out of sheer fury at his inability to control him.
If it’s true that controlling Arthur becomes more difficult the more you try to exert brute force, and that only a human can find the stone, then someone who can control the one human capable of thwarting elder gods is the biggest threat to Kayne’s efforts to retrieve the stone, even if she was trapped in the dark world. If Scratch was the missing piece that would make Lilith whole again, it was probably only a matter of time before she figured out how to untie him anyway, break free and learn the truth for herself, so Kayne had to think fast. True to his nature, Kayne opted for a deal, albeit an extremely risky one.
But he has faith in our boys; we’ll see how that works out for him next month I suppose.
WAIT SHIT NO ITS ROLAND.
ROLAND IS THE THING OBSCURING THE BLACKSTONE. AND ROLAND’S LIGHTER IS OBSCURING ARTHUR.
Ok now I’m really going to bed
I can’t fucking believe I missed the most damning bit of evidence for my theory.
I missed it between the cute banter over John not knowing what a wheelchair is, but Kayne never tells them what the wager is, or with who.
And since Yorick confirmed that Lilith got there just before Arthur and John, it’s not hard to assume that Lilith and Kayne have coordinating something around finding the Blackstone, even if they’ve pitted themselves against each other.
The fact that this theory still has legs is bringing me so much joy.
