As someone who has written academic papers about the role of disguise and deceit in the Odyssey â Nobody is so damn important.
Prior to this point, when Odysseus tries to exercise Xenia (ancient Greek guest rites/hospitality code), he did what he was supposed to do. (Well, we think so anyway â notably, the most famous books of the Odyssey are told by Odysseus, who isnât exactly a reliable narrator.)
But when Polyphemus kills and eats some of the men, the game changes. The Cyclops makes it clear he has no intention of abiding by Zeusâs laws, and will cannibalize the lot of the men. So, Odysseus responds in kind â he breaks Xenia and lies. He introduces himself under a false name as part of a trick. Polyphemus then breaks Xenia again â he tells Nobody heâll be eaten last, and that is the Cyclopsâ guest gift to him.
Odysseusâ transgression is clearly the lesser one. The Nobody trick works. It gets Odysseus and most of his crew out of the cave alive.
But, crucially, before leaving Odysseus sheds his disguise. He admits his true identity, in detail, so he can boast of his achievements and add vanquishing a Cyclops to the list. And it bites him in the ass spectacularly.
The only reason why Polyphemus can curse Odysseus, can bid his father Poseidon to curse the man who blinded him, is because he now knows who did it. If Odysseus had kept his mouth shut, he might have safely made it home from there. But while a big part of why the Nobody disguise vs. real name reveal is showing Odysseusâs hubris, itâs not just about that. Itâs also about the start of a pattern that hurts him more than it helps him.
From this point in the Odyssey on, Odysseus lies about his identity constantly. And sometimes it protects him, but more often itâs a detriment or at least unnecessary. Heâs lying about his identity primarily to people who are on his side â a kindly loyal swineherd, his son, his faithful wife, his ailing father.
The last one is especially damning, because happens when Odysseus has already killed the suitors and returned home and reunited with the rest of his family sans disguises. He knows from everyone else that Laertes never betrayed him or his legacy, but was mourning his son and heartbroken for almost a decade. Odysseus has publicly declared his return to everyone else â his father doesnât know because heâs living in squalor remotely. But Odysseus doesnât tell his father who he is. He makes up a fake identity and tells a story implying Laertesâ son is dead. And when Laertes bursts out crying, then Odysseus drops the charade and finally admits who he really was.
There was no utility to that lie. No loyalty to test. No hidden threats to worry about. But Odysseus still instinctively lies to his beloved father about who he is, only dropping the charade when he sees the damage itâs doing to his relationships.
Because at this point, lying is pathological for Odysseus. He canât seem to stop doing it. Because with Polyphemus, a lie protected him and the truth hurt him. That is the point of the â Nobodyâ disguise.

paying off build-ups on character arcs isn't filler
having a season that's lighter on the main narrative to focus on the fallout of an intense arc, and ultimately reiterate and reconstruct the core themes of the show isn't filler
none of it's filler by definition because RWBY isn't an adaptation of anything - filler is specifically added material to pad for time so an adaptation doesn't catch up too quickly
it speaks to an incuriousness and dismissal towards the setting and the characters to dismiss everything volume 9 was doing as filler. this is a character driven show
rwby makes me want to cry so bad. imagine being created with the budget of a nickel and two toothpicks. the map of the region was a stain on a napkin. the creator wrote out to the ninth volume but died before the last of the third volume. but his friends kept the show going, kept true to what he wrote. the show survived the shutdown of the parent company. had crossover movies with wb and was dropped by them as well. got picked up by yet another studio. has been in hiatus hell for 3 years but is confirmed to continue. this is insane and unheard of for this type of show. also the core message of the show is to not give up, to keep going even when the going gets tough, never give up. rwby is not giving up. rwby, monty, you will always be famous <3

Right, so this is a thing Iâve been doing in private for a while: assigning the characters of whatever fandom a musical theatre song that reflects their personality. Today, Iâm going in depth on TADC in this fashion as a sort of send-off to my latest greatest hyperfixation. Putting it under a cut because this is a long one.
Caine: Razzle Dazzle, Chicago
In TADCâs infancy, I put this here as a placeholder until we got more than âoverzealous ringmasterâ from Caine. Episode 8 seemed to cement âThe Pitiful Childrenâ as a more fitting pick, and I was happy to let it be so, until episode 9 put the kibosh on that. After agonizing way too long on the integrity of my self-appointed project, I found âRazzle Dazzleâ was the true answer all along.
Think about it: What are Caineâs two defining characteristics? His showmanship and his lies. âRazzle Dazzleâ combines those without the villainous connotations of âPitiful Children.â Oh, itâs definitely there, but itâs there in a way that feels true to Caine. I hope you see the vision here.
Pomni: Watch What Happens, Newsies
Itâs hard work being a protagonist. Everything happens to you and youâre expected to just keep going. At age 25 youâre already struggling to find your footing in the wider world; the last thing you need is to be shanghaied into a Harlan Ellison story. And you definitely donât need to accidentally become the leader of a ragtag bunch of misfits who have their lives together even less than you do somehow.
Anyway, hereâs a song that combines the competency and the restlessness of Pomniâs leadership era. Because sometimes itâs not about overcoming anxiety, itâs about letting it spur you onward.
Jax: No More, Into the Woods
I had âFreeze Your Brainâ from Heathers here for the longest time, and I do still stand by that as an accurate representation of Jax and her unhealthy way of coping by freezing everyone out. Iâd even written out a whole paragraph explaining it in depth. And then episode 9 happened. And those last momentsâthat swirl of conflicting emotions, that bitterness and remorse and despairâmade me change it to this.
Into the Woods as a whole is a metaphor for life, and âNo Moreâ is an argument: why not run away from adversity? Why not hide from what you know will bring pain? It presents these questions and offers no real counterpoint, because there is none. In the end, you make the choice to face life or not. There is no better pick for Jax.
Ragatha: Sugar Cloud, Ride the Cyclone
Oh boy. Knowing this fandom, whatever I say here is going to piss somebody off. Itâs a good thing I donât give a shit.
Ragathaâs defining character trait, in my opinion, is her relationship with positivity. All series sheâs been trying to be this beacon of hope for everyone while clearly lacking positivity herself. Itâs a lie, until it isnât.
In the monologue just before âSugar Cloud,â the singer (who is dead, by the way) describes the moment she realized the beauty of life. It was the last moment before her horrible death. âIt took a horrible accident for me to realize how goddamn wonderful everything is,â she says, and thatâs Ragatha. Learning how to be positive because of trauma, not in spite of it. Truly, thereâs nothing wrong with being the nicest girl in town.
Kinger: Relativity, The Theory of Relativity
Oh god, Kinger. Itâs weird to say, but have you ever wished a character werenât so complex? Itâs almost like they werenât meant to have their entire being shoehorned into a single song. Seriously, if I could put just the legacy monologue from âThe World Was Wide Enoughâ here I would, but thanks to the restrictions placed on this project by myself I cannot pick and choose. Itâs the whole song or nothing.
The Theory of Relativity is a lesser-known musical about relationships of various typesâhow they form, how they feel, and why we need them. Of all the songs I considered, it felt the most true to Kingerâs âThe worst thing you can do in this world is make someone think theyâre not wantedâ philosophy. I really hope you can see my vision here, because I canât really put it into words.
Gangle: Die, Vampire, Die!, [title of show]
âWhy this song, Angel?!â you cry. âWhat about this song screams âGangleâ to you?â The simple answer is that I want to give this poor girl a happy ending. We know Zoey eventually found the confidence to publish her work online, so why not use that and Gangleâs self-esteem struggles to inform my decision? This oneâs veering into headcanon territory, I admit, but look me in the eyes and tell me Gangle doesnât deserve to murder some inner demons.
Zooble: Who Iâd Be, Shrek the Musical
If youâre not a theatre fan, it may surprise you how many songs about dysmorphia I had to pick from. âMy Bodyâ from The Life was an early contender, but it conveys a level of self-confidence that Zooble just hasnât achieved yet. Maybe Riley has, but not Zooble. So with so many queer anthems to pick from, it may surprise you that I ended up going with none of them.
Thing is, a character has dysmorphia; dysmorphia does not define the character. What defines Zooble is their desire to make a mark on the world, and their implication that they donât think they can. Thatâs what âWho Iâd Beâ is about: the hero you wish you were that you donât realize you already are.
Bubble: Youâre Nothing Without Me, City of Angels
Bubble was the hardest of the main cast, becauseâŠitâs Bubble. Even with their role in Caineâs Ep 8 crashout and the Blue AI implications, itâs still hard enough to find enough of a personality to make a good match. So I took that one scene from ep 8 and went with that. A song about a creation telling their creator how much they suck seemed appropriate. Iâm not entirely happy with my choice, but I tried.
Scratch: The Break, Next to Normal
Because you donât create a digital escape from your physical body if you havenât been burned by doctors before. Itâs not one-to-one with Scratchâs situation (or what little we know of it), but the frustration of a million different people telling you a million different things are wrong with you still shines through. I think. I hope.
Kaufmo: Edges of the World, Fun Home
âWhat do we know about Kaufmo that you could funnel into a theme song?â Well, Iâd be lying if I said it was easy, but hereâs a song where someone looks back on their life, realizes the futility of it all, and abruptly dies. Not bad.
Queenie: Cut You a Piece, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition
I set this one after episode 3 came out and it hasnât changed since. The story of losing a loved one and having a piece of you die with them turned out to be more and more relevant. I donât think I need to say much more.
Ribbit: The Tree on the Hill, The Lightning Thief
Ep 9 gave us some great insight into RibbitâŠbut to be perfectly honest, I already knew what her song would be long before that. Even when all we had to go on was the effect her abstraction had on Jax, I had already matched her with the ultimate song about survivorâs guilt.
What Ep 9 did give us was glimpses of Jax and Ribbitâs deteriorating relationship, and while it didnât change my mind about her song, it did recontextualize some lines when imagining them put in Jaxâs mouth. Specifically the lines âMaybe doesnât let me go back and save her/ Maybe doesnât make it alrightâ

Honestly, this was fun! Knowing I had to justify my choices to an outside audience made me really think about them. I might do this again for other fandoms if anyone thinks thatâs worth reading.
