yknow i originally shipped shadowstarion as a 'haha the bitchiest couple in faerun! they're both wine aunts ahahaha' but now it's not a joke fuck man
I am SO fucking normal about this dialogue option. So normal.
true though
tired of people who don't play D&D saying that Gale is obsessed with his ex because he talks about her and/or still has his matching earring with her.
In D&D a LOT of magic comes from worshipping a god. opposed to clerics, wizards don't have to draw their power from the gods but they certainly can. It's clear that Gale has a relationship with the weave that goes beyond study, he worships it, he worships the god who made it.
His earring is simply her sigil (simplified to work for an earring, but her sigil nonetheless.) Going back to wizardry in 5e, this could also be his arcane/spell focus. It isn't uncommon for wizards to have something related to their god as their spell focus if they draw their power from their god. If this is the case, he wouldn't have his power without it.
It isn't as simple for him to go "oh we broke up time to stop worshipping her" because he can't just let go of all his power and of the weave. If he were to stop he may have to relearn how to wizard with drawing his power somewhere else. BUT even then, to give up Mystra is to give up the weave which isn't physically possible for a wizard because they use and manipulate the weave.
Regardless, even if it wasn't as simple and not deep as I've made it out to be, remind me again how any of that would be his fault? You can write paragraphs and build up universes in your mind where Astarion gets a happy ending and is cured, but a healthy relationship between Mystra and Gale that is purely professional, that's where you draw the line? D&D gods are fucked, they take, they abuse, and they are still worshipped regardless because they are needed. Like fuck, did you miss all of Shadowfell where you see the Shar worshippers do insanely fucked shit and Shadowheart still has big ol' heart eyes? Even though she was also abused and used by her god? Not to mention I'm pretty sure she still technically worships Shar until you finish her companion quest in full, so that means everything happens with the Nightsong and she still is drawing power from Shar. If you can resist victim blaming Shadowheart, I don't see why that compassion doesn't extend to Gale.
TL;DR Just because he's not as charismatic and likable (in your opinion), doesn't mean you have to burn him at the stake for doing something completely normal as far as D&D 5e is concerned.
Gale Dekarios discussion:
One thing that’s bugging me is that people are dragging his character - listen when I started BG3 mid of August last year I did NOT like him he annoyed me to the point where he would speak and I would tell him to shut up but that was my reaction to Astarion and Shadowheart too but! they all grew on me a lot over the time of the game.
What rubs me the wrong way is when people hate traits of his that resemble a person’s with nerudivergent ones- we get it you hate autistic people wow so original- as someone who is sure they are both Autistic and has ADHD - and getting assessed pretty soon - it irks me because it brings up the past of me masking to fit in and it still not being enough and people disliking me or hating me.
Also people complaining that he’s not over Mystra - Mystra knew him from when he was 8 years old and later in his life used and abused (groomed ) him and he’s working through it in the game and he mentions her because she’s the reason for her magic.
I just love that Gale's romance scenes are like "How to Land the Partner of Your Dreams while Honoring Your Autistic Hyperfixations: Parts 1-3. By: Gale 'of Waterdeep' Dekarios".
autistic wizards just hit different
yknow, some people think im boring for shipping astarion/shadowheart bc theyre a m/f couple, and i could go into that particular can of biphobia, erasing their bisexuality just bc eww m/f ships, as well as just being an immature take, but no, my only justification is that i myself am a bisexual disaster and they have me in a chokehold. i would let them do things to me that could manifest the devil himself to tell us to knock it off. i am smooshing them together like barbies bc i am not pixelated and cannot be inbetween them. die.
yes shadowstar has the potential to be a stereotypical and boring forced hetero pairing but god. they’re genuinely so complex i can’t get over them. there’s something sooo poetic about two broken people who are trying to hide/ignore/diminish their suffering crashing together and exploding into a million pieces
astarion helping shadowheart see that her devotion to shar is hurting her, that she’s running herself ragged for a goddess whose gifts are few and far between, that she’s lost her sense of self to her faith and deserves to be a person of her own design rather than just another cleric
shadowheart helping astarion see that he’s more than an object, praising him for his skill with a bow and his wit and intelligence and everything but his body… and of course, shadowheart is well-versed in adoration, she has the words astarion needs to hear to feel wholly loved
freeing one another from their mental/spiritual prisons and dragging each other out regardless of the effort it takes. they’ve been through the fucking ringer, what difference does one more round make?
relationship complexity aside i just can’t fathom them as that “stereotypical straight couple” in the slightest either. you can’t tell me that shadowstar haven’t experimented with gender presentation and neither of them fit the stereotypical mold in the slightest. if anything astarion is the flirty little thing batting his eyelashes for shadowheart’s stoic and reserved intensity

I legally have to reblog this every time I see it
contrary to popular belief i think a ladybug dakimakura would he where chat draws the line. yes he can have a shrine for her in his bedroom but a daki feels inappropriate.
so obviously ladybug responds to this discomfort by personally designing and gifting him the most outrageous ladybug dakimakura. and like. what is he meant to do. it's a gift from his lady. he accepts it but he refuses to make eye contact with it ever.
im sorry but i got such a visceral image in my head of this and i couldnt shake it
"Lesbian means exclusive attraction to women!"
"No, it means non-men exclusively attracted to non-men!"
"It actually means queer attraction to women!"
"Lesbian means women and nonbinary people being exclusively attracted to other women and nonbinary people!"
Lesbian is a multifaceted label that can describe many different experiences. There is no one perfect definition of lesbian that will encompass the entire diverse experiences that lesbians can have.
I'm personally a genderqueer woman who's exclusively attracted to other women, but the lesbian next to me might be a transmasc lesbian who loves all genders except for men. And the lesbian next to them might be a bigender lesbian who's both a girl and a boy, who's exclusively attracted to women. Our experiences can all be described by the term lesbian if that's how we wish to describe it, but we might define it differently based on our own experiences. And guess what?
None of our definitions are wrong, but none of our definitions will encompass every other lesbian's experiences. A word can have multiple definitions without any of the definitions being wrong. And those definitions can be very vague or very specific. Labels are made to fit us- we aren't made to fit labels.
People who may have a different experience with the lesbian label are not your enemies. People in lesbian spaces who aren't exactly like you are not your enemies. The problem comes when you try to force one singular definition on every single lesbian. THAT is harmful. Sending death threats to other lesbians because they don't have the same experience as you is harmful. Not another lesbian having a different experience from you.
GET URSELF SOME COMICS! HELP OUT SOME PALESTINIAN FAMILIES!
Hello, I have put together a bundle of comics to raise money for those affected by the ongoing g3n0c1de. There are some really really wonderful comics in here by so many amazing artists and 100% of the proceeds go to palestinian gofundmes. The comic I have contributed is a 50 page comic I made in 2019 about starman's daughter and her human boyfriend called A Really Big House, which you can currently ONLY buy through this bundle. So get at it.
I made memes for the first time last night after Misha Collins came out as a zionist who denies textbook genocide
We're on a roll and are thrilled to announce that the Raffle for Palestine will be extended until May 31st, 2024! Thank you to everyone who has donated and everyone who will donate. If you haven't entered the Raffle yet, head on over to the link in our bio to check it out!
