the spines on her back are part of a curse-transformation that manifests whenever she uses her magic. her supernatural abilities were thrust upon her by an uknown deity (against her will). the more she uses her magic, the faster her "affliction" takes hold: she is transforming into a fish/deep sea creature. it's like a disease. her body succumbs to the infection while her mind remains awake, aware of every change and mutation, yet ultimately unable to stop the process. she's a witness to her own transmutation.

So I carefully combed through Wyll's backstory dialogue because I need it for a fic I'd like to write. (I know, I know. But I mean it this time I really will do it!)
Anyway, it's interesting to see that if you ask Wyll to share the story of his pact with Mizora out loud instead of through the mind meld, Gale has a special comment: "Orbs of dragonkind. Could it be? I thought only three were left."
Yeah, obviously I went to look up what the hell an orb of dragonkind is. And damn, these things have some pretty interesting lore! Same goes for the Cult of the Dragon as a whole, actually.
Like, Wyll really is Lore Georg of Baldur's Gate. I want an expanded backstory comic or novel for him so bad...
Also I'm now 100% convinced how that his backstory was planned to come up at some point in-game during development. Because during Early Access there were robes with the Cult of the Dragon symbol on them, never implemented but in the game files:
