inspired by that bit in Home when Scully tells Mulder that if he had to do without a cellphone for two minutes he'd go insane
joy saying she wants to go into pathology is actually everything to me. of course she does, of course she wants the part of medicine that can’t betray her.
in episode 5, we finally see the structural rot behind her distance: her grandma didn’t just die of leukemia, she died uninsured. it wasn’t a medical failure, nor a matter of doctors not caring; it was a death by bureaucracy. it was the violence of a bottom line. that kind of trauma doesn’t just make you sad, it induces a permanent moral injury.
her ‘apathy’ isn’t boredom; i’d argue it’s not even solely because of ogilvie. it’s pre-grieving in a sense. every time she looks at a patient in the ER, she isn’t just seeing an illness: she’s seeing a replay of the moment medicine turned into paperwork, cost, and inevitability. joy keeps her distance because she’s intimately aware of the reality of medicine; she understands that the diagnosis is only half the battle—the other half is whether access allows the cure.
so of course she wants pathology. she isn’t chasing ‘medical mysteries’ solely out of curiosity; she’s chasing a world where the truth actually wins. under a microscope, the body cannot lie and insurance cannot interfere. there is a mercy in that. the diagnosis is final, objective, and solved—something her grandmother likely never got because the tests she needed were probably too expensive or denied until it was too late. in pathology, she can just be with the science, solve the puzzle, and know the answer will hold.
pathology is a refuge—the part of medicine where the disease is the only problem she has to face. she can confront what’s in front of her without watching the system decide who gets a shot at survival. she isn’t choosing distance from humanity—she’s choosing a version of care where the answer is enough. where knowing the truth doesn’t mean watching someone lose for reasons no one should have to endure.

Santos is one of the angriest people you are ever going to meet.
no cos baran starting her first fucking day by bringing in bagels for the entire department and leaving alone and crying in her car I am going to punch God.
“No, you are not fully capable, and you know it.”
Girls who are gonna be ok <3
how i sleep knowing javadi finally found her purpose, mel is reclaiming her identity outside of becca, santos let someone else in, langdon finally got to speak his mind to robby and be heard, whitaker is off somewhere funking it up with lil’ theo, digby is watching the fireworks with the er’s true diva, and robby saw a younger version of himself in baby jane and showed himself the kind of kindness he hasn’t been able to in years
my sweet beautiful angel hasn’t been this happy since she found out the nun had gonorrhoea in her eye
and to think im never going to see the lesbian avengers assembled in this line up again
the fact that this was mostly unscripted and Isa and Gerran broke for real makes Gerran trying to keep it at a "jeez" but breaking and dragging it out into a "jesus christ" so funny
Platonic here, inappropriate there, no but actually the funniest thing about the Whitaker-Amy situation is that these two pictures are just ten months apart. Amy lost the "love of her life," had a baby, and is at risk of having to sell her home, but ten months of hanging with Whitaker was enough to transform her from a devout, staid woman in the most unflattering 1970s maternity blouse into a fashionable smiling young person with a proper haircut. She even dyed her hair! She lost the cross necklace! That's the power of vintage funk! The avocado diet glow-up! Listen, I don't know if this is Whitaker stealthily queer-eyeing his new friend, or if his dick is truly magical, but either way this woman is living her best life.
