◎ If you had the option to see one thing for a day, what would it be?
Oh, hello, Luxe! What an excellent question.
I believe I would like to see the faces of my friends and loved ons, of course.
Hiya, babe. You're so sweet, I missed that.
Follow-up question, how would you take it if that was possible but you found out that my playing with your hair, was me actually running chalk dye through it?
You just want to do that because my hair will likely take to color extremely well.
What color?
Absolutely! Mmm, I think a nice pastel. Maybe pink or blue. Oh! Mint would compliment very well, or sea foam... sea foam fits you I think. I think about it a lot. Maybe give the family some choice too? A lock of whatever? Only with your say-so.
I think the family would find putting color in my hair to be amusing.
You may try it if you wish. Next time you visit.
We needed more family oriented activities. If it goes well we can make it a common thing. Maybe see if we can get Cas in on it. Thanks, Ang.
How have you been though? I know this visit is long overdue.
Are you saying you’re going to try and convince Casimir to let you dye his hair? Good luck with that, Luxe. If you couldn’t do it forty or even twenty years ago, I doubt you’ll be able to do so now.
Ah, I’ve been well. I recently had a nice picnic with a good friend, and I may have also met someone? I am unsure how that will go.
◎ If you had the option to see one thing for a day, what would it be?

I simply try to be kind, unless I am given reason not to be. I missed you as well.
You just want to dye my hair because it is white and will take to any color…

“I would prefer to not be ill at all. Far too messy. Our bodies are not meant to consume such things, not anymore,” he said with a shake of his head, his brow furrowed. Angelus really didn’t look too keen on the idea of attempting food again. Once had been enough to not only slate his curiosity, but thoroughly stamp it out. He knew very well what his body could and could not tolerate.
“Actually, the last time they were both here, and I had gone out for a hunt, the two of them had a little argument on whether it should be just called dinner or…I believe they used the words ‘fang time.’” Angelus looked a mixture of fond and exasperated as he told the anecdote. “Ah…Petra may enjoy such things. Fair warning to you, she asks a lot of questions.”
Angelus had bore his soul to her in the minutes it had taken him to explain why he had no fledglings and likely never would. And now she was hugging him. Tightly. Whereas some may have tensed at the embrace, he did not. Instead, he softened into it, eyes closing as he leaned into her touch. Her words of comfort were a balm, and when he did respond, his own words were quiet. “It is alright, Rose. You have had your own life to enjoy, and I would not be a very good friend if I kept you from it. I will do better at reaching out as well; I have this problem where I always believe I am intruding.” A small laugh escaped him. “You do not always have to visit me here. I can always try and come to you, if that is something you would like? And as for finding my…person, I hope you are right.”
Angelus smelled of clean, salted sea wind, wild mountain sage, and olive wood smoke, but underneath was a trace of something sharp, old, and undefinable. As her lips unexpectedly pressed to his cheek, the ancient let out a happy, affectionate laugh. She certainly was a wonder.
He was about to thank her for her kind words when she began to ask what his type was and offered to set him up with someone from her coven. Angelus blinked several times before he started to chuckle. “Ah, hmmm, Hektor, Petra and I had a similar conversation the other day. Appearance preferences vary, as I see that by…touch, not by sight. But, I really like a deep voice. And as for personality? Intelligent, passionate, fun…According to Petra, I like nerds, apparently.” He seemed amused at the prospect of having Rose look out for him in this way. “You are an excellent friend, Rose. Thank you.”
Her laugh at what Hektor's mortal children called Angelus's is loud, but she has does think they have a point. "From the mouths of babes. And she can ask as many questions as she wants when that day comes. I look forward to it."
Rose had met Hektor once he was already well established as Angelus's human liaison, and though she was friendly with him, they hadn't established a true friendship on their own. If she intended to live centuries, as close to forever as she could, then it would be good to know the next in line before they took over. Rose can't imagine not being friends with Angelus ever in future.
"Maybe once I have a permanent residence in Europe I'll invite you. I have a few properties in North America, but that would be far too long of a distance to make you travel. And you could never intrude on my life, Angelus. If I've got stuff going on, I'll tell you I need time, but that's about it."
She meant it, and she hoped he believed her. As he speaks of his preferences she runs a hand over her own face, aware of how the contours of a face could be felt. She giggles at his like for nerds before remembering the blood jellies, "Open your mouth." Rose fills the spoon with several tiny blood gels, each no bigger than a single drop of blood. The spherical shapes are easy to chew, and she feeds him before eating a mouthful herself. "They sometimes pop and you get a surprise! If you're into nerds, I do know a single one, but I don't think his voice is very deep. I'll keep an eye out for you."
Warmed by his words, she pats his hand before holding it within hers, interlacing their fingers. "As are you, Angelus. You're making me feel brave tonight, and I'm grateful." Rose doesn't want to dwell on why, but focus on, what is considering, a highly successful picnic.
At the moment, it was hard for Angelus to imagine his life without Hektor liaising, assisting, and just generally being present in his life. Once he began training and working with whoever took over his spot—Petra was the current assumption—Angelus would see the man less and less, until he only saw him socially until the day of his death. That was another thing that Angelus tried very carefully not to think of.
“I do not mind traveling. That is all I used to do, before I settled here, but it was much more difficult then…and I was more reliant on strangers than I would have liked. Hektor can easily get me on a plane, so long as there is someone waiting when I get off,” he explained with a smile. Angelus wasn’t completely helpless. He just struggled with modern transportation and modern technology in general. He could get around in a new place fairly easily, after he was given some time to acclimate. “I have only been to America once or twice. I have a few friends who live there, actually. But I would be happy to visit you wherever you are, Rose.” He nodded at her statement of him not intruding. “That is good to know. I look forward to visiting one day.”
At being told to open his mouth, Angelus blinks several times in surprise, brow furrowing with slight caution. Ah, but of course, this was Rose and they were having this little picnic. Obviously she had one last thing for him to try. So, Angelus complied, and soon his mouth was full of several gelatinous somethings. Angelus was so surprised, he didn’t do anything for a moment, but just kept his mouth slightly open until he heard her start to chew. A little ambivalent, he started to do the same, but very gently, as Rose spoke, only for his eyebrows to shoot up as one of the gels popped in his mouth and there was a rush of liquid—blood. Angelus’ expression went from slightly confused and concerned to actually delighted very quickly. “Oh!” He exclaimed. “That is quite something! Rose, I do like this one as well. I haven’t chewed anything since I was a very young man. What a treat. And as for this nerd you speak of, I’d be happy to meet anyone you might like to introduce me to. Worst case scenario: I make another new friend.”
Angelus gave her hand a squeeze when she laced their fingers together, smiling very gently at the gratitude. “I am making you brave? Is something making you…scared, Rose?” He asked out of concern. She had heard his story tonight and comforted him. The very least he could do was offer the same. She did not have to explain if she did not wish to, of course, but he was there regardless.
Send a ◎ and a question and my muse must answer, even if it’s a secret.
What friend isn’t answering?
Oh, my good friend Casimir. I have heard from him, thankfully.
I hope he will not mind me saying this… But, he appears to be going through a very tough time emotionally at the moment. He was not ready to talk to me about it just yet, especially not over the phone, but I hope he will soon.
I worry for him. I have not heard him this morose and irritable since he visited for the Ifestia Festival in 1992.
He’ll be fine. He’s grappling with some…complex emotions that I believe he tends to compartmentalize away.
Lestat, I didn’t know you were acquainted with Casimir! What a small world we live in sometimes.
Yes, while he is excellent at his job in helping others, he’s not always so good at helping himself. I’ve never met a man more self-deprecating.
-laughs-
We met over my refusal to go to therapy. We have been working at a friendship, though I'd be lying if I didn't tell you I find him endlessly attractive, both physically and intellectually.
Mm. I haven't met as much of the self-deprecation, except when it comes to his endless guilt regarding his family. This, however, was regarding his last love affair, and the grief he holds over it.
Oh, how lovely! Not the refusal of therapy, though. Not everyone wants to do that. He’s really very good at it, though, but he is an even better friend when lets himself have those relationships. He and I have been friends for about…40 years now?
-grins and laughs at Lestat’s admission-
Oh, that’s delightful, Lestat. He is quite the charmer when he likes someone, friend or otherwise. I’m sure he likes you just as much.
I see him more as a…sibling, but I can understand his appeal.
-his smile disappeared at the mention of his last love-
Oh, that…makes sense.
I am aware of what happened with that, at least his side. Casimir has some…issues with obsessing over his work. He’s always liked to figure things out, but apparently that has…compounded a bit for him as a Vampire. He admitted this to me. But, I believe he has put in quite alot of effort to change since then, but between you and me, sometimes I think he overcompensates and the opposite occurs.
Yes, he seems fairly heartbroken. I believe he was pushed to violence by an antagonistic acquaintance of mine who insisted that Reese deserves better. Played right into those insecurities.
You might get him to chat with you about it.
Oh. Yes, that would do it.
Did he injure this other person fairly badly?
I will call him again. I will also invite him to stay for a few days, perhaps. The sea air might do him good.
Eh, he's almost three hundred years old. He can take it. He's alive, anyway.
And yes, do. He also found out that Reese is more...actively around that I think he was prepared to discover, so that didn't help.
Angelus, I don't truly know. Try reminding him that no one ever really hides from us forever. Eternity is long.
I am glad he made it through the encounter.
Oh, I see. While I cannot relate to the level of regret he feels nor that feeling of a great love lost in such a way, I do understand how lonely he must be sometimes. I think he’s been burying a lot of that for a very long time.
I will do my best to coax him out of whatever hole he’s dug himself into.

How have you been, lately?
I am fine. Nothing too exciting to report, I am afraid.
I an worried for one of my friends, though.
He did not pick up the phone the other night when I tried to call. He never does that.
".... thank god nobody questions my relationship preferences."
“Be careful; I thought the same. Then they descended upon me.”
"Yeah, you know, it's not like I don't think it could happen to me, but you're a vampire though. You've got the fangs I don't, and for whatever reason when you get the fangs you see everyone wants to know your business... and I think they think once you've got them instantly you're expected to sleep around or something. That somehow anything you kept of your humanity is stripped. It's really fucked up. It really is. I get it you're all predators, but you were human, you have your preferences and underneath everything you still are with all the positive and negatives that come with that."
“I will not deny that when I was a much younger Vampire I spent many a night in the arms of others. I know now it was driven by the desire to be close to someone, anyone, and now I am much more…discerning,” he said with a shrug. “I think for others perhaps, it is the first time they can do perform such activities with reckless abandon without being concerned for the more severe consequences, aside from the emotional ones. Mind you, this is not an excuse, just an explanation.”
“Yes, am still just man who was once human—perhaps a bit more than human in my case, but I’m also a monster, Vincent.” He shook his head. “Monsters have preferences, too, I suppose. And unlike many of my…peers, monogamy is one of them. But though I keep some things more close to the vest, I find being honest to be rather exhilarating.”
...I'm also a monster. Of all the lines Vincent despised to hear, this was one of them.
"Don't call yourself that Angelus." The witch's words are quick to retort. "I get it I don't know about you well. I don't know how you feed, but I've known monsters, and you don't feel like one. If you needing to live off human or having a body that works different you're no more a monster than we are to cows and pigs. Then the hawk is to the hare. That's natural. You're natural. You're vampire and that's it."
He paused for a moment then sighed. Angelus didn't need him to tell him this.
"Suppose I was the same once I realised I was free of my curse, you know. I was a bit wild there for a couple of years, but I was also scared or something and I think I just wanted to be with someone. Made bad choices. Hurt some folk because I couldn't accept some things or be what they wanted me to be. Does that make me a bad person?"
Angelus’ blinked at his quick retort, staying quiet as Vincent spoke of why he wasn’t a monster. He didn’t know if Vincent would be saying these things if he knew what Angelus actually looked like and how he used to be. “I have known monsters, too. My Sire was one in both senses of the word. I have done my best not to be as he was, though I was not very successful at that as a younger Immortal. I don’t require much blood. I can subsist on a few mouthfuls every so often. Usually taken from blood bags, or wild game.” He paused to smile a little. “It is nice to hear someone jump so quickly to defend that I am…a person, despite what I am.” When Angelus called himself a monster, he wasn’t really saying that was who he was…but just what he was. Monsters were people, too. Mostly. At least the good ones were.
“You have not told me about this curse of yours,” he admitted before he shook his head at Vincent’s question. “I do not think so. Bad people generally do not show much remorse for their actions. Whereas good people…good people can do bad things, but what makes them good is recognising the bad…and striving to change.”
