In anticipation if Chapter 2 coming soon, I'm posting a look back at Chapter 1 of Not Like This:

Aleksander cannot remember the last time he summoned so quickly, so furiously, so desperately. The beating sound of his stallion's hooves striking the forest floor, branches fwacking back at him, at his arms, his shoulders, his legs.

They cut into his face.

Something is ripping at him--tearing at him--from within. If it's in his mind or truly in his chest like how it feels, he cannot say.

But he knows.

With unwavering certainty, he knows.

Not like this. Not Like This.

She was supposed to be safe.

This entry from last year imagines a scenario where Alina and Mal had left the Little Palace hunting for the stag and then… encountered some druskelle. Aleksander of course is hot on their heels, stomping through the snow in the cold, icy Northern winter, desperate to find his sun summoner, but will he arrive in time? 

This story deviates at this point and has a bit of angst and panic, sneaky druskelle that are trying to destroy Aleksander’s plans, and (maybe) a tiny bit of tragedy. If this is something for you, have a look!

The real reason Nikolai was away from Os Alta: General Kirigan was keeping him safe. Nikolai was smart, clever. He'd taught the boy to control his shadows as soon as he discovered them--as soon as he felt the familiar shadows pluming within the boy. It wasn't much effort at all to convince the Tsar that it would be a good show of patriotism for the Second Prince to serve Ravka in uniform. It would keep him safe from the threat of discovery, vile disregard for Grisha, and insidious plotting that rotted the foundations of Os Alta. Afterall, Aleksander Morozova would do anything to protect his son.
