"You're the Chief of police!" He very nearly yelled. "And you want to sit idly by and just... do nothing?" Alexei stared at him with wide eyes.
‘ do you really want me to go in there ? me ?’ hopper was sure that if alexei really knew what he was like, not just chief-of-police-jim-hopper-hero-of-hawkins he’d rather have anyone else investigate. ‘ i can barely string a sentence together when it comes to things like . . . that. feelings. ’
Alexei ran a hand over his face, exasperated beyond his crippling fear of the man.
"I understand that, but this is your daughter, and isn't it your duty as a father to console her no matter what the cause of her tears may be?"
He peered into the other room at the curled up figure on the bed. Perhaps Joyce was better suited to this. He had just come over to report to Jim his most recent findings about the cracks when he, inevitably, got caught up in this. Now, he was invested.

Now Alexei was very much confused. If this man really was one of the people he was running from, he didn’t think they’d have got so far in a conversation. He’d have probably been either dead or captured, at the very least, before that. So, it had to be ruled out. Who was he, then? He wasn’t really buying the ‘immigrant’ story. No town-folk in his time here had ever called this place ‘nice’.
“Clearly, you’ve been misled, my friend.” He gestured to the scene in front of them: at the gaping crack and the dead plants and trees around them. “This town is many things. 'Nice’ is rarely used to describe it.” He scoffed, putting away his pad.
“If I were you, I’d consider leaving as soon as possible. You’ve come at the wrong time.”
Maybe with this friendly warning, he might discover what actually brought this Russian to America. He held a grave look on his face. This man looked tough, yes. But he guessed that he might not have had dealings with other-worldly creatures before and it was best to not involve any more people in this mess.
“Well, when it was described to me, I was not told about the crumbling buildings, fires, and cracks in the ground. So, you are right. I have been misled.”
In some sense, at least. The way Hopper had talked about the town back in Russia, the rush to get back to help their children, he had assumed there was SOMETHING about the town. He just hadn’t been expecting to see the town looking like it had just barely survived an explosion, if that. Still, despite the somewhat deadpan humor in his tone, he remained fairly serious.
He wanted to HELP, but it was clear he might not know enough about the situation to be useful in a way that mattered. Dmitri had barely escaped that pit with Hopper, then the prison itself, and now? He didn’t know. So, the advice this stranger offered up wasn’t lost on him. Still, he couldn’t just up and leave. Not when he knew the prison in Kamchatka was trying to keep these creatures so what happened in Hawkins would happen there. Or whatever use his government had for keeping these creatures around, but it wasn’t too hard to figure out.
“I have friends here,” he replied, settling on that vague reply, “I want to help them. I will move on after, I have no plans of staying. Though, thank you for the WARNINGS. You have habit of standing by disaster sites and drawing them?”
His lips quirked up slightly. This man was funny. He was also chivalrous. Alexei, on the other hand, wouldn't mind a one-way ticket out of here. Maybe he'd travel to some country far off in the east; change his name; create a whole new identity for himself. He might even get to work on that novel he'd always wanted to write.
"What? This? No, I think the whole thing is just very aesthetically appealing. Makes a great picture to hang over a fireplace, don't you think?" He pretended to consider it deeply.
Call him gullible but he was ready to trust this man. He hadn't outwardly displayed any signs to suggest otherwise. And... he liked him a little. It would be nice to have a friend from his country. At least, they could share the same disdain for certain things about it, if not anything else.
He sighed. Here goes everything. "I'm sorry. I haven't been completely honest with you."

"You know! Is that not enough?" He honestly couldn't believe he'd managed to keep it from a lot of people for so long. He was always on pins whenever he was reading through an English book or watching American TV channels. He'd told the ones he trusted enough or the ones he knew would find out anyway. (Nancy definitely fit in the second category.) Things were good. There was no need to go about upsetting that delicate bubble.
