The term brony was generally gender neutral back in the origins of the fandom. There have been polls and census conducted that indicate most fans viewed the term as such.

“Brony” is literally a portmanteau of “bro” and “pony”. It came into use specifically to describe the presence of men in the fandom. 4chaners coined it themselves.

Wanna bet the same folks who insist “brony” is gender neutral are the same dudes who whine that feminism should really be called humanism because the “fem” in the word is icky and totally excludes their manliness?
