like i know that jaeyi’s dream of drowning is a suicidal fantasy but it’s still, to her, a tangible out, and water does play the role of setting her free, to the point that it removes inhibitions from her relationship w seulgi. seulgi first talks about going missing in jaeyi’s bedroom, which is the underwater simulacrum she has made for herself. this is also where jaeyi confesses to having mr. woo’s phone, where seulgi learns that jaeyi knows about her past (which is an involuntary revelation. an honesty that jaeyi wouldn’t offer but that is necessary to level her relationship w seulgi). the only honest moments between seulgi and jaeyi after jaeyi retreats into her final plan happen at the pool, particularly after seulgi goes underwater without knowing how to swim. seulgi’s lesbian dream takes place in the bath. jaeyi tells seulgi about taejun’s involvement in her father’s death while they’re standing before a fountain of sorts. a lot of these have to do with seulgi rather than jaeyi herself but they drag out something out of her she’d be loath to proffer otherwise. water is the locus of jaeyi’s vulnerability and also the only place her father can’t access and surveil, which endows her some degree of strength. of course she fantasizes about sinking forever. but the symbol transforms & when she practices holding her breath, she’s resisting the weight of her armor. she actually has a way to change her circumstances and the shell around her heart is not heavier than her.
