Solange : A Seat At The Table

I have finally got round to sharing my latest album artwork for another beautiful release: Solange’s A Seat At The Table. I have been listening to this album non stop for the past week and, along with Bon Iver’s latest release, I really do think these albums will be the sort I cling on to for years to come. 

Im not sure what it is about this album that makes it so fantastically wholesome, perhaps its the spoken interludes that make it so very personal, or maybe the beautiful slow funk beat which seems to pay tribute to Prince. Either way I love it. It almost serves as an autobiography and statement of the history of the black woman in America, its a story, a document, an ode to the struggles and and problems that are faced by hundreds today. The almost meditative affect of the harmonies, rhythms and lyrics make this album impossible not to like. 

I have once again tried to keep my design minimal yet using a palette of dirty sorbets combined with washed back textures and patterns to reflect the underlying funk at the core of this album. When I listened to this album I instantly thought of Neapolitan ice cream (don’t ask why) so wanted to layer bands of colours to reflect this. 

I feel this album ties in beautifully with the Hygge phase that is going around at the moment. This trend obsession with the Danish state of Hygge seems to be the new cool expression to live your life by these days. The term itself doesn’t really translate to anything in english, some say its a sense of cosiness and closeness, others say its a state of mind. Really though its that true sense of home and comfort achieved when around loved ones. Although, just to confuse things, it doesn’t even need to happen at home, Hygge could be achieved in a nice restaurant with good food, around a camp fire, or even in this case listening to Solange’s new album. In some ways this actually relates to the romantic sense of Dwelling that I studied for my final year dissertation, this again is a feeling that cannot be defined and is unique to all, but when a house becomes a home, it is then your personal Dwelling. A sacred place for you to feel completely at ease, relaxed and ‘at home’. It’s not really something Danish at all, the Danes just have a special word for it. 

Anyway personally  this album can be put in my special collection of things that make me Hygge. Along with lots of candles, a good book and a glass of red wine.
