Pluribus season 2 predictions:
- The "hive mind" communicating through electromagnetic fields is essential to the plot.
- The reason why the hive mind emphasizes the importance of hydration is because hydration is essential to human electromagnetic fields (ie: electrolytes).
- The virus likely could have originated from some form of sea or aquatic life.
- Before reaching earth, the virus came from a water planet. The giant satellite the hive mind is attempting to build to replicate itself will be designed to try to reach another water planet.
- The purpose of the atom bomb is to act as an EMP that will disrupt the electromagnetic field that the hive mind uses to communicate. Deploying an EMP device will be essential to the plot.
- The hive mind is essentially a virus and must be understood as such. A virus can't "lie" (it's not an alien or a parasite) but it can mimic the host's protein structures. In Pluribus, all cultural activities by the hive mind are mimicry/performative. The hive mind has no need for human language, art, literature, music, clothing, etc. Carol is correct in asserting that the enthusiasm for her writing is purely a distraction tactic. The virus can also "lie" by error of omission (ie: not telling Carol that they are actively working on turning her without her consent).
- The way the virus works is by hijacking the CNS of the host and affecting the uptake of key neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin creates the perception of happiness, and dopamine is an important modulator of locomotor activity--which is essential for the virus to control physical movement.
- Drugs & alcohol interrupt neurotransmitter pathways and reward circuits by binding to the same receptors in the brain. This is why Zosia's virus lost control when drugged. Zosia was only pretending to drink alcohol.
- The abandonment of pets and domesticated animals proves that the hive mind is not loving or empathetic. It protects its own existence.
- There is some significance to the "pet" animals being black and white, but I'm not certain what that is yet. Could be purely aesthetic.
- Laxmi will return for season 2. I think the fate of her son will determine what side she's on.
- Starvation will be an important plot point. Viruses aren't sentient creatures so they can't care about survival, but they will reproduce and destroy the host given the opportunity. Viruses are opportunistic and will exploit resources at their disposal.
- There will be characters with damaged or missing clothing, since the hive mind can't harvest and clothing is deemed not essential.
- The hive mind doesn't intend to occupy earth long term. As a virus, it knows its time is limited and that it will quickly starve to death. Its primary goal & biological imperitive is to self-replicate and spread. The giant satellite that the hive mind is building will be an essential plot point in season 2.
I am still absolutely obsessed with the slur song. Some poor HR manager in Aotearoa has no idea they inadvertently created the gay pride banger of the century. It's everything "Born This Way" was trying to be.
Of all the enemies to lovers arcs, Australia and New Zealand joining forces to create one of the biggest club hits of the year out of a workplace training module about slurs was certainly not on our 2025 bingo card

You don't get the right to be critical of a system that you personally benefit from. You have absolutely no right to critique a system that puts food on your table every day if you're not willing or able to do the dirty work or improve that system via realistic, practical means (not standing around with a home made sign, whining and complaining). This includes vegans, because "vegan organic" farming is 100% a scam. Living creatures died for your monoculture crop that is 50% covered in pesticides. Sorry, not sorry.

So I'm reading for an art history class, and Baudrillard is talking about the trends in colour usage from generation to generation (mostly in interior design, but there's definite spillover into fashion, architecture, etc.), and how every new colour movement is a direct rebellion against the previous one, like how the bright colours of the 60s/70s were a direct response to the austerity and seriousness of the WWII/postwar era, and how a shift back to organized, moralistic neutrals were a direct rejection of 60s/70s gaudiness, etc., and that all makes sense, people find their parent's style tacky, sure
But he goes on to observe how we've now been stuck in a lull of pasty tones and naturalistic finishes for some time, and I'm thinking yes, he's so right, but that's weird, because its been hanging around for so long, like what is it rebelling against anymore? What is it answering to? Well all I had to do was be patient because lo and behold, Baudrillard provides the following sentence, which caused me to completely wig out:
"...except of course, for the spheres of advertising and commerce, where colour's power to corrupt enjoys full rein"
And I'm like ooohhhhHHHHHH, so this colourless minimalist wasteland of a design principle:

is assaulting all of our eyes, inside and outside of our homes, every waking second, and is tainting the very concept of colour into something we can't relax around in our living spaces.

In the age where you can pay to get rid of ads on youtube etc, having a commercial-free surrounding is a sign of wealth and privilege.
Part of the minimalist trend in housing is flip culture. Colour preference is subjective. Someone is less likely to buy your house if the interior is gaudy. Same thing with cars. Which is why manufacturers limit vehicle paint colors, to make them more appealing to a broader audience. Bright, pop-y colors are also associated with youth & children's toys. A limited colour palette is more sophisticated and mature. Which is a result of pigments being cheaper, allowing them to be used to sell cheap commercial goods. This is different from the baroque period, where ostentatious decor was the privilege of the rich. Trends percolate from the rich and get copied by the lower classes, so the rich change their look so they aren't associated with the lower class. Ie: Rich people get dark wood decor, so manufacturers make dark wood furniture for the lower classes, so the rich convert back to light wood. So in summary it's class warfare that helps dictate changing tastes, driven by commercialism & our advertising hellscape. Which is also thiqq/thin culture revolves in cycles so companies can sell celebrities & consumers alike more products & new clothes, but I'll save that rant for another day.

“Cow’s Skull: Red, White, and Blue,” one of O’Keeffe’s most famous works, is among her earliest studies of a single animal bone isolated from its natural environment. Despite its Southwestern subject matter, the painting was most likely done in Lake George during fall 1931. The cow’s skull was one of several bones O’Keeffe had shipped East the year before, with the intention of painting them. The interesting shapes and textures of the bones and their natural play of positive form and negative space repeatedly inspired her to depict them. She saw in their jagged edges, worn surfaces, and pale color the essence of the desert — a beauty that was enduring and untouchable.
