SUMMARY,
trigger warnings â homophobia/lesbophobia mention, bullying, anxiety (society anxiety), mental health, true crime mention.
The daughter to a lesbian couple, Anne-Louise grew up incredibly loved and protected. To the point of detriment. Hilda and Pauline knew about the dangers of the world and wanted to save Anne-Louise any of the heartache that came with it, but it gave her heartache in other ways. It made her a timid girl, deathly afraid of her peers, and an easy target for bullies. Suburban Illinois in the early 2000s was a different place, and with two moms, some of her classmates used that to ostracize Annie. She had friends and was generally liked by most of her peers, but there was a subset that found it was incredibly easy to rile her up and used that to their advantage all throughout grade school.
It wasnât always terrible, though. Again, she had her friends, and her teachers always commented on how well-behaved she was. Her true sanctuary, however, was her home. Anne-Louise never felt better than when she was on the couch with her moms, or curled up on her bed reading a book. It made her moms happy, too, to know her whereabouts at all times. The Oosterhuis family spent their holidays and weekends together for nearly every minute, often watching true crime documentaries, which did not help young Annie-Louâs anxiety. Hilda and Paulina, but Hilda especially, were needlessly strict with their daughter when she never really craved more leeway; she was much more interested in playing The Sims than talking to weirdos on the internet, and she never wanted to go anywhere alone. She had never been the type to roughhouse, and no one in the world would've described her as daring.
Her love for art started at a young age when she learned how to knit her first hat at an afterschool program (her mothers both worked, Hilda as a Nurse and Pauline as Physics Professor at BHU). She found a peace in the focus it took to not drop a stitch, or to make sure she sewed in a straight line. Her affinity for fiber arts developed into a passion for all art, which she majored in at BHU after fighting with her parents for a long time about itâthey wanted her to go down a more practical path, but Anne-Louise rebelled for the first time by compromising with them. Sheâd get her BFA in order to start working as an art teacher. Working in a school, the place that she hated for so long, was reclaiming her power.
Which led her to teaching art at Blue Harbor Elementary. Of course she wouldnât stray far from her hometown, feeling no desire to venture out of its confines. Her familyâs in Blue Harbor, so why would she ever need to leave? However, she did need some independence from her parents, so she moved out of her momsâ house in Laurel Villageâa little too late according to some people, already twenty-seven and a few years into teaching, though Annie claims she just wasn't ready yetâinto an apartment in Weaver Ridge, much cheaper (and shittier, naturally) and closer to her other job.
Her other job? Bartending. In college, Anne-Louise started working at OâSheaâs Irish Pub, owned by family friend, in order to help her social anxiety and make some money. It was only supposed to last until she graduated, but with how little she came to find out sheâd be paid as a teacher, Anne-Louise returned to OâSheaâs begging for her old job back, which her boss David was more than willing to give her. She works part-time there now, taking random evening shifts and working every weekend and holiday to supplement her income. Now that Leonâher former childhood crush, turned mortal enemy due to a dating mix up that left her staying up all night for him to take her on a date when he he had already left town earlier that dayâowns the bar, however, sheâs constantly rethinking her employment.
Sheâs settled into a pretty comfortable routine, but still regularly suffers from anxiety. Still, her life has much improved from the scared, nervous little girl she used to be. Her moms are still heavily involved in her life, so sheâs often still trying to gain independence from them and finally feel like a real adult, but their protectiveness is comforting and always readily available. Her passion for art is growing every day, and while she will always prefer quilting, knitting, and sewingâart that feels more tactile in her handsâthere is never a time in her adult life where sheâs not overcome with appreciation for art and beauty. And thereâs nothing that makes her life worthwhile more than sharing that appreciation with her beloved little students!
PERSONALITY,
Anne-Louise is an all-time, infallible, notorious Good Girlâą and constantly competing against Phoebe Yates and Rachel Han for the Nicest Woman In Blue Harbor Award. That last part is a joke, but she does have a reputation around town for being incredibly sweet and always happy to help⊠AKA a total pushover. This is mostly a defense mechanism stemming from the bullying she suffered in middle school thatâs lasted her whole life, but sheâs (usually) genuine in her efforts to be kind to everyone. Unless youâre Leon Wozniak, or a few other choice people around Blue Harbor. Her dislike comes out either as passive aggression or childish insolence. She has a hidden vindictive side that rarely gets to come out, so when she truly doesnât like you, her efforts to express it are backhanded and sneaky.
A knitting and sewing hobbyist, Anne-Louise shows her love for her family and friends through handmade gifts. She regularly makes quilts and knits various items for special occasions and gift-giving holidays, even if people donât ask for or want them. She sometimes sells her creations on Etsy, but sheâs not really consistent with it due to lack of time with two jobs and her beloved dog, Sally. (She made a quilt for Leon to give to him during their date-that-he-didnât-know-was-a-date which she never gave him, and it still haunts her from the top shelf of her closet to this day.)
Anne-Louise is a whimsigoth queen that loves celestial prints, velvet fabric, and (work appropriate) witchy clothing. Ever since she saw Practical Magic when she was seven, sheâs wanted nothing more than to live in that movie, or be a witch herself. Her parents love the aesthetic as well, so her childhood home was basically the house from Sabrina The Teenage Witch but if the aunts were wives instead lmao. Sheâs also Kate Bushâs Number 1 Fan, having fallen in love with her when she was gifted a copy of Hounds of Love on CD for Christmas in 2002. Though she loves Stevie Nicks and Tori Amos almost as much.
Due to her severe anxiety and living in a house obsessed with true crime, Anne-Louise is an adult virgin. Itâs her biggest secret and most painful source of shame. She developed a fear of intimacy and men in general as a teen, after hearing plenty of horror stories of the terrible things that can happen to women on various true crime shows. Her mothers didnât help in this regard, always warning her of the dangers of the real world. Sheâs gotten close a few times throughout the years to losing her virginity, but sheâs always chickened out at the last second. Sheâs built it up so much in her head that she fears the real experience will never match up to what sheâs imagined. Since she feels such shame about it, only a select few people in her life know the truth; sometimes sheâll lie and say she has had sex if anyone asks, usually by claiming she had a one-night stand with some guy passing through Blue Harbor at OâSheaâs. The older she gets, though, the less she cares about it not happening for her yet.
Because of her fear of intimacy, she tends to gain crushes easily and build them up in head, only to have said person never live up to the pedestal she put them on. Anne-Louiseâs a bit of a romantic, despite only having a handful of boyfriends in her timeâusually they end up dumping her after they get tired of her seizing up any time they get even close to having sex together. Sheâs still waiting for that one Romantic Comedy Love thatâs sure to come her way (despite the fact that sheâs too afraid to actually try and really put herself out there).
CONNECTIONS,
specific connections,
HER MOMS / Hilda Oosterhuis and Pauline Thornton-Oosterhuis, her mothers are Anne-Louise's best friends. They are her biggest supporters in her life, but their overprotective parenting and constantly sheltering has left her with some anxities she can't seem to fully overcome. / wc here!
HER ADOPTIVE OR MATERNAL HALF-SIBLING / Hilda and Pauline had a child before Anne-Louise, either by adopting them or using a donor like they had with Annie (it's up to you!). Like with Anne-Louise, they were fully enmeshed with their parents, but it became clear that she was the golden child pretty early on. Still, they're all very close to each other. / wc here!
HER PATERNAL HALF-SIBLING(S) (0/3) / Hilda and Pauline used an anonymous donor (with Hilda carrying her), so Anne-Louise knows nothing about her biological father or if she has any biological siblings. Recently, she's joined a Donor Kid facebook group that's convinced her to get a DNA test behind her mothers' backs. / wc here!
HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER / Since her moms used an anonymous donor for her, Anne-Louise knows nearly nothing about the man that supplied 50% of her DNA. She's always wondered about him, only knowing that he's white, was in his early to mid-twenties at the time of donation, and he lived in Chicago. Having recently ordered a DNA test, she's hoping to find her biological father; even if they don't develop a relationship, she'd still like to know his name and what he looks like. / wc here!
HER ROOMMATE (1/1) / The person she lives with currently, they share an apartment in Weaver Ridge that's within walking distance to O'Shea's Irish Pub. They're likely good friends, but we can plot some coldness between them if that's what we feel like doing! Anne-Louise currently has a Bernese Mountain Dog named Sally, but they could own the dog together. / @micahweissberg
general connections,
FRIENDS / Anne-Louise is a generally affable lady, so she's known to make friends wherever she goes (she forces herself to be sociable in order to get over her anxiety, to varying degrees of success). Once she knows you, she can talk for hours about anything, and she's very generous with her time and with homemade gifts. Basically, as long as you're cool, she's cool. / @dahliayoung, @lewysstone
BEST FRIEND (0/1, 28+) / This person is her bestest bestest bestest friend of all time... besides her moms, of course. They spend a lot of time together, and they're constantly in contact via text messaging or FaceTime. She'll support them through anything, and they're one of the few people in the world she's trusted with her secret about her virginity. This muse could try to help her lose it, or maybe reassure her she's worth more than whether she has sex or not. Perhaps both. This connection could also be merged with the Roommate role!
ENEMIES / Anne-Louise doesn't have many, at least not that she didn't develop in middle school, but there are some people in Blue Harbor that she cannot stand. With most people she dislikes, she's somewhat adept at hiding it, but a select few in town set her off for some reason or another. We can plot why she doesn't like them, or if it's mutual! / @leonwozniak
CO-WORKERS / Calling all Blue Harbor Elementary School teachers! Or just faculty of the Blue Harbor School District in general. Anne-Louise is generally easy to get along with, but maybe there's tension for some reason? Perhaps they don't like her approach to teaching, or a misunderstanding? Or maybe they're good buds that eat lunch together and hang out outside of work. Anne-Louise also works part-time at O'Shea's and has since she was 20, so if your muse works there or has worked there in the past, they definitely know her in some capacity. / @damianesco (school), @leonwozniak (bar), @clementinebriar (bar)
HER STUDENTS' PARENTS / Got a kid in elementary school? Then it's likely their art teacher is Anne-Louise. She's a very empathetic teacher, and she likes to share her passion for art with her students. However, there's always going to be some parent that has to make a fuss, so perhaps they're not impressed by her teaching or they think art is a useless subject. Most of the kids love Annie, though.
REGULARS AT O'SHEA'S / Again, she's worked at O'Shea's for fifteen years, so if your muse comes into the bar with any regularity, they know Annie. Now working in a part-time capacity since becoming a teacher, she mostly works on a random weeknight or on the weekends/holidays, but she switches to full time during the summers and winter break every year. Maybe your muse doesn't like her, maybe she's their favorite bartender, etc. / @mohanmax, @lewysstone
EX-BOYFRIENDS (0/3, m/nb, 33+) / Though Anne-Louise is basically deathly afraid of intimacy, she has tried on more than one occasion to put herself out there and start a romantic relationship. Usually these relationships don't last more than a few weeks, as she's too scared to be vulnerable and tell them the truth over her virginity, or for another reason we can make up. I'm envisioning her having a high school boyfriend, a college one, and then one in the last few years, so evenly spread throughout time. Each one was doomed to fail, however. :(
HIGH SCHOOL BEST FRIEND (1/1, f/nb, 34-37) / This person is different from her current best friend, because they had a falling out with Anne-Louise at some point after high school graduation. Typical of high school girls, these two were basically attached at the hip, and there were rumors of them being in love with each other all around school. They always denied them, but they were indeed half-in love with each other and were lowkey very possessive of each other. Likely, their falling out happened because they were way too enmeshed with each other and things just blew up between them for some reason or another. Either they've recently reconnected, or they're still cold to each other. / @mayanoelle
CHILDHOOD BEST FRIENDS (0/2, 33-37) / These muses were either separately friends with Anne-Louise, or they were the three musketeers throughout their childhoods. They might have all lived in Laurel Village together, or were in the same class at BHES. Over time, however, they grew apart from Anne-Louise (we can make up a reason why) and after a few years, they became just faces in the hallway to each other. They can be friendly or recently reconnect, or there could be a lot of awkwardness between them. Up to us!
FORMER BULLIES / Anne-Louise was heavily bullied in middle school and the first few years of high school. She was quickly identified as an easy target because of her shy nature and having two moms, so a few kids in her class made life hell for her. Anne-Louise begged her parents to let her be homeschooled, but they refused and she was forced to stay in classes with kids that hated her. Maybe your muse regrets being mean to her back then, or they think they did nothing wrong? Or maybe they were friends with her biggest bullies, but had no problem with her personally; they just didn't do anything to stop her main bullies. This is a sensitive topic so we can plot this out heavily together!
ROMANTIC INTERESTS (28+) / Just because she's afraid of physical intimacy doesn't mean that Anne-Louise doesn't get crushes! In fact, she tends to fall in love easily with people, build up a whole fantasy of them in her head, then get her heart broken when they don't live up to her expectations. There are many avenues to go with this one, so let's plot! / @mohanmax (crush, flirty)
(EVENTUAL) SEXUAL INTERESTS (28+) / Again, just because she's afraid of physical intimacy doesn't mean she doesn't feel sexual desire. She's just too hung up on her insecurities and anxieties to act on it. I mean c'mon, she'd have no problem pulling hook ups if she wanted to. I imagine at some point in play Anne-Louise will open up sexually with someone, either losing her virginity or fooling around, but it will take a lot of trust and time for that to happen. We'll plot it all out together my loves!!
and anything else we can think of! you know my discord y'all <3
