Annex Cat Rescue is once again participating in Canada’s annual day of giving back to the community, GivingTuesday. It’s a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others. More than 4,200 Canadian charities and businesses have joined the movement so far.

This year we’ve decided to focus on the gift of Time — YOUR Time. We hope you will join in!

Share your story on social media! Why do you volunteer with Annex Cat Rescue? What is the role you play? Have you adopted an Annex Cat Rescue cat who you love to bits?

You have something valuable to share. Talking to others about why you do what you do will inspire others to help Toronto’s homeless cats.

Today we encourage you to take an #UNselfie. It’s really easy to create one. Here’s how: 1) Take a piece of paper and write “Annex Cat Rescue” and something you love about the work you do as part of ACR to help homeless cats in Toronto. 2) Take your picture (or even better your cat’s picture) holding up the piece of paper in front of you. 3) Upload the photo to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media channels and be sure to include the hashtags #GivingTuesdayCA and #UNselfie

Walk or Run for Annex Cat Rescue on October 16!

On Oct. 16, 2016, Team ACR '16 will be participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Half-Marathon and 5k while raising funds for Annex Cat Rescue.

2017 will mark Annex Cat Rescue's 20th anniversary, which is an amazing accomplishment for a charity that began as a few neighbours getting together to help some homeless cats. This success is due to all the many committed volunteers that we have working with us as well as the generosity of our supporters.

This year we face extraordinary challenges as we are helping more street cats than ever before. And many of those cats come to us needing the usual spay/neuter and vaccinations but also expensive medical procedures such as dental work, diagnostic tests, or medications for diabetes and hypothyroidism. We have 13 feral cat colonies under our care and work closely with our neighbours to trap-neuter-return or take in other tameable cats as we can.

Please consider making a donation - any amount helps! THIS YEAR, ALL DONATIONS UP TO OUR GOAL OF $15,000 WILL BE MATCHED, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, by a very generous and longtime friend of Annex Cat Rescue. All donations will receive an official electronic tax receipt.

Our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude for our wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly and with passion. Wimpy's story is a triumphant one, and his very kind, patient and encouraging fosterer and socializer, Tara, has helped him reach a new chapter in his life.

"The team at Annex Cat Rescue has done an incredible job rescuing cats off the street and socializing them to become adoptable indoor cats. There are so many moving parts to rescuing and socializing a kitty so that they can live safe, comfortable and happy lives indoors. I'm so happy to have been able to be a part of this kitty's journey, Wimpy. Last summer he was hit by a car and left for dead. We had little hope we would find him and trap him because he hid somewhere for months in some serious pain. Well, we did. And look at him now! He's at his second foster home (the cat whisperer at Annex Cat Rescue, Jacqueline) and happy as can be! What a success story!! His growing trust in humans and the techniques used to get him there just blow me away. It's amazing."

And, guess what, folks? He'll soon be up for adoption!

Start spreading the news... this Saturday we'll be at Pet Uno on College St for our next Adoptathon and we may, just may, have some female kittens, if we can get them vetted in time. Of course, not everyone wants a crazy baby cat that they have to keep an eye on 24/7 so we'll be bringing some other cats equally deserving of a good home. We hope to see you there!

They call me RILEY.  I was abandoned when my owner moved out. Now I was somewhere new and was very frightened. I hid for 3 days but THEN I realized that things may not be so bad. On day 4 I came out to see what was happening and I sat on the couch and in the window. On day 5 I jumped up on the bed with my foster mom, rolled around like a little kitten and gave myself a bath. On day 6, I jumped up on the bed and I even let my foster mom pet me a little....with some caution on both our parts then I fell asleep up against her hip. By day 8 I was loving the love, rolling around for major belly rubs and sleeping in the bed with her for naptimes and night night. Now I love everyone who comes to see me. Hi , my name is Bailey. I'm looking for my forever home with a loving family who will provide me with pats and plenty of treats. I've been told I look like a cute little Panda Bear but I'm just your everyday handsome tuxedo cat. I love to cuddle in laps and get scratched in my favourite spot behind my ear. 

You might catch me purring after dinner or when I'm curled up in my warm bed cause life is so much better after living on the streets. I'm quite the entertainer and will do tricks for Temptation Treats, just like the cat in the TV commercial. I was thinking I might audition for the next one. 

I was told I have FIV, but you would never know it because I have so much energy and I love to play. I have one unusual quirk: I drink water by scooping it up in my paw and I have been known to play and splash it everywhere. When Miss Kitty my girlfriend comes to visit, I'm a bit of a show-off and toss my favourite toy in the air in hopes of impressing her. I can't really tell if it's working but I keep trying. 

I get excited sometimes when playing and have accidentally scratched but I'm still young and learning. If you like to see me in action, just call 416-410-3835. I'd love to meet you.

SNORLAX -- a big girl with an even bigger heart! Named after the Pokemon Snorlax, she shares his love of long naps, his rounded shape and she snores pretty loud! She's rarely more than a few feet away from her foster mom and if she's lying beside you she'll always keep one paw on you to claim you as hers. She loves having her belly rubbed and will roll back in forth in ecstasy if you'll brush it for her. After you brush her she'll clean you too as a thank you (or maybe just to keep you from getting her dirty again). 

While she loves humans most, she is also friendly to other cats as long as she gets to keep them clean! She likes to spend her days getting cuddled by humans, her evenings chasing various mouse shaped toys and her nights sleeping against your back. She also has the most stunning eyes you'll ever see on a cat, green with a thin strip of neon blue around the pupil. Snorlax is the biggest sweetheart and only needs a few minutes to charm anyone's pants off.

Meet Lilybelle, today's Feral Friday cat. Lilybelle lives in one of ACR's managed colonies. In this video, sent in by feeder Rondi A., she has just eaten and at the end of the clip, she smacks her chops. Yum, yum.

It's hard to believe that LENNY TABBITZ has yet to find his forever home where he can purr up a storm and give his lovin' all day long. Lenny was originally a street cat, found outside a music club in Little Italy in Toronto, but those that took him in saw that he really loved his indoor life. His handsome face and friendly nature had won his rescuers over in a heartbeat.

Winter was left out in the cold in a box outside of a veterinarian’s office. He was in bad shape and wasn’t expected to live. Barely more than skin and bones at the time, he had a number of medical problems including early renal failure, lymphoma, and kidney issues.  After a successful social media campaign, we were able to find him a wonderful palliative home. 

Winter is an old boy and while he doesn’t run around so much, he still likes to play with catnip and other toys. “Everyone that meets him adores him,” says his mom Melissa. “He has a life that’s full of love!”

The year 2016 is off to a very good start for this special boy named Wimpy. Within the last few months of 2015, the members of ACR decided to search for Wimpy and pull him off the streets after he was noticeably losing weight and looking sickly. Wimpy was also hit by a car that left him with a broken femur. After 4 months of efforts, Wimpy was trapped on Christmas, and he soon found himself in the good hands of the caring and reliable folks over at the Roncy Village Veterinary Clinic.

Full examination and assessment showed that he is FIV+ and one scared little guy. Learning to trust again, Wimpy is now in loving socialization foster care. ACR is learning that he loves getting his ears rubbed and enjoys a good old fashioned petting while his body heals. We are so happy Wimpy is getting a chance to get some much deserved relief and proper care. Stay tuned for more stories of progress about this brave and wonderful boy.

Sassy, formerly Checkers, was adopted after spending a year in foster care. When Kelli read about Sassy on the ACR website, she knew she had to give this grumpy-faced sweetheart a chance. Checkers was renamed Sassy due to her sassy meow - which came out especially when she wanted food! Sassy developed a special bond with Kelli's three year old daughter, and could often be found at the end of her bed. Sadly Sassy passed away in June, but she was dearly loved and is very missed. Kelli wants to share her story and shine a spotlight on senior cats who often have a much more difficult time finding a home. Buck is one very unique kitty cat with an amazing story of survival and perseverance. After being hit by a car and sustaining multiple fractures on his leg, which the doctors then had to amputate, Buck can now run and jump on three legs while adjusting to his life indoors. Buck is an FIV+ kitty, and is also affectionate, inquisitive, lively and personable with a thing for nuzzling in blankets. Did we mention he is also very talkative?
