One of the most inspiring talks I went to at PQ'15 was Chance Magazine's "All design is chance: reinventing theatre photography and journalism"
Why do people not read theatre magazines like art magazines and fashion magazines? Why is theatre always portrayed in such dull ways? Why aren't fantastic costumes given the praise they should? and fantastic sets? I bought all 4 issues on the spot.
Chance has moved away from photographing theatre in the traditional archival way. You are allowed to see the photographers subjective view of the costumes, sets and actors, and its a very refreshing point of view indeed. Details are visible and explored...emotions, backstage, angles you would never see from the audience. Pieces that might have been unsuccessful performance wise but not design wise come into their own.
Chance is also not afraid of the crossroads between fashion, film and theatre which I find hugely refreshing and I've discovered many practitioners that neither fashion or theatre magazines would traditionally cover.
Visual focus aside there are also many great and detailed interviews with directors, composers, designers, performance makers and theater companies.
I hope Chance Magazine will open up theatre and performance for people who otherwise wouldn't see it, or have strong conceptions of what it might be and look like. It definitely shakes the dust off the word "Theatre".
