Barricade Day in Real Time: June 5, 11pm

The second attack. Jean Valjean sits thinking outside the Rue de l’Homme Armé apartment. Gavroche spies a second assault on the barricade, and recalls the rebels (including all Amis save Feuilly), who were paying respects to Mabeuf’s body in the basement room. Bahorel shoots the first soldier over the barricade at close quarters, and is killed by the second’s bayonet. Marius arrives, killing in two shots the guardsman menacing Gavroche, and the one threatening Courfeyrac. With the barricade 2/3 overrun, Marius grabs a powder keg and threatens to detonate it, forcing the guards to retreat. Éponine takes a bullet aimed at Marius. Jean Prouvaire is captured and shot by Captain Fannicot’s company. Mme Hucheloup, Matelotte and Gibelotte hide in a cellar. Éponine gives Marius Cosette’s letter, then dies of her wounds. Marius attempts to save Gavroche by sending him to deliver his farewell note to Cosette.
