STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS 1x10 “A Quality of Mercy”
you know what we all moved on from too soon? the emotional implications of dana being fully aware the only person robby really listens to is jack and that the truly hard, painful truths ✨have✨ to come from jack to even have any chance of making it through to robby.
dana, who loves and respects robby, who robby clearly loves and respects right back, who robby can't fathom running the hospital without, but even through all that mutual adoration and affection there is still a final mile between them, a wall dana simply can’t breakthrough, one that robby is stubborn and steadfast about maintaining. whether that’s because of some kind of internalized bias or some misguided sense of responsibility or just sheer stubborness on robby’s end, who knows, but the cracks dana sees in robby are in spite of his effort, things robby is trying and failing to hide, rather than because robby lets her in to see him. robby trusts dana so much, but clearly still needs her to see him a certain way, to be the fearless leader, her partner in crime, someone who’s strong, the carer and never the one who needs care. if i had to guess i'd say at least toward the end of s2 he’s self aware enough to know dana has seen past that smokescreen, but even still at no point does robby ever let himself open up to her. he resists up until the very end and what he does reveals is reactive, almost out of his control, never meant to be shared except the veil is too thin and he is too tired to hide behind it.
with jack, robby still gnashes his teeth, but he’s doesn’t lie to him. it almost feels like he can’t, that he doesn't want to. oh he'll try to distract him, try to deflect so he doesn't have to give in, or he'll avoid him so he doesn't have to confront it, but when jack really really steps up to the plate and confronts robby directly it's almost like it's the secret code for robby's brain to shut up and listen. when jack point blank asks, robby answers. he hears him, even if he doesn't always believe him, even if he can't, and as far as we've seen on screen, it works. jack knows robby doesn't like to to listen because this is a song and a dance they've done before. when no one else can make robby even begin to listen, they look to jack to cross that line because it's a line he's been able to cross before.
and dana knows this, has clearly witnessed this enough times that she is fully aware that robby will defer to jack and listen to jack, especially when he will not listen to her. when jack can not read robby, he goes to dana, and when dana can not reach robby she goes to jack. dana is the sentinel, the watchful eyes and jack is the cavalry, the big guns, the hail mary when it comes to robby. dana is the brains and jack is the muscle and robby is the heart, and right now the heart is broken. the history that must exist between the three of them for both dana and jack to know this between them, to depend on one another to keep robby afloat. i imagine COVID pushed that to it's limit, and adamson's death pushed it right over that. years, maybe decades, of an unspoken rule that while robby tries keeps the hospital upright, dana and jack will try to keep robby upright and in the past year they've had to acknowledge it out loud twice now. dana knows that if robby is beyond her (and i imagine it doesn't happen that often), he is not beyond jack, and maybe up til now that has never ever been the case, but at the end of s2 it was so clear to me that dana was terrified they were there. jack spent that last hour watching robby, but dana spent that last hour watching jack, because dana knew that if robby was truly beyond them both, that was a robby they would lose forever.
Alright! What the hell?
THE PITT — S01E15 "9:00 P.M."
The way Becka regarded Agnes as a goddess after her patricide.
She took off the robe, showing Agnes the proof of her devotion. She said "He cant hurt you anymore." searching for her approval. Then she stripped, completely bare and vulnerable before Agnes, important detail in a society so afraid of the "power" of the female body. Then Agnes bathes her, similar to a baptism. Becka says something like "I committed divine justice... and for you" as if Agnes is more important than the lord she has been told to revere. "I would do anything for you, Agnes."
Becka came to Agnes as a disciple proving herself worthy to worship her, and Agnes was just afraid.
straight vs queer ships in shows are always like….omg girl and boy shared a lingering glance once? that must mean they’re in love?…versus i killed my father because he dared lay hands on you. when i was doing it i felt like the divine light of justice and my love for you felt pure and clean and holy because i rid the world of evil in devotion to you.
EMERY WALSH — S01E14 "8:00 P.M."
Aziraphale and Crowley did NOT get a happy ending. Let that sink in.
After everything they'd gone through together, all their history, their love spanning 6000 years, they literally vanished into dust.
Their "human versions" are not them. They met each other in their 50s? 60s? and will get like 30 or so years together.
No sticking together for centuries despite being from opposite factions in an eternal conflict, no developing their rivalry, friendship, and eventually love throughout the ages, no having each other's back despite the dangers of doing so, no bickering, no rescuing each other, no "you go too fast for me, Crowley", no 'our' Bentley, no "angel" as a pet name, NO THEM. At all.
This is my worst nightmare I'm going the fuck back to sleep.
Of fucking course he said this. Y'all can't even handle the complex characters of day shift. What makes you think you can handle the complexities of people who knowingly chose to work nights? Those characters aren't gonna stay the cool, calm, collected people you think they are because those are all surface-level qualities. You don't actually want night shift, you want the ease of not having to watch characters actively go through a mental health crisis.
y’all only like night shift because their flaws have been exclusively implied in very missable throw away lines (and towards people y’all don’t sympathize with anyway).
ellis told trinity nobody gave a shit how tired, traumatized, or exhausted she was when trinity was on the fourteenth hour of her twelve hour shift. a season of that, to more universally sympathetic characters, will NOT be palatable to a lot of gen z. ellis doesn’t care if junior residents are overworked, she doesn’t coddle or encourage. she is a tough love, ‘put me in coach,’ rub some dirt on it kind of person, and the gen z viewership will become overly critical of her life philosophy that demands a lot of grit.
shen is insensitive and detached. robby was wondering where his step son was, there was a mass casualty rolling in, and shen was relaxed enough to sip on his dunkin. he was bothering robby about if he could get thanksgiving and christmas off that year. shen’s blasé attitude will start to grate on people as he extends that lack of fucks given to more patients and coworkers than just robby.
jack is not the woke guy everyone projects him to be. i believe they kept him far away from the ICE episode because the writers had no truly satisfying answer to how jack’s character would act in that situation. this man participated in imperialism for free college and healthcare (or for valor which is even worse). he continues to listen to police scanners and joins SWAT. he is on the side of the establishment as it relates to exerting force. he may have unpacked some conservative values, but there will be nuance there that will make black and white thinkers very uncomfortable.
the night shift doctors characterization is much less developed, but the seeds of complexity are there. ellis hates whining, shen is largely emotionally removed from any patient outcomes, jack is a mess of contradictions. people just can’t pick up on that because they watch the show while scrolling through their phone.
you. don’t. want. night. shift. you want to know less about the characters so you can continue to project your values onto them.
this is very true for most people. unlike ME, who wants those fuckers and their big fat ugly flaws on blast. give me more mentally ill assholes doing mentally ill asshole things. so i can write fanfiction making them even worse. i deserve it.
Unpopular opinion time but I don’t particularly care for Medschool Rabbot. I understand the appeal of the whole lifelong soulmates thing, but to me it’s so much more romantic that Jack and Robby found each other later in life.
Like these are two men in their late forties/fifties who have already survived so much grief and guilt and loss between them that it’s practically calcified into them. Their lives are already fully formed by the time they meet. Entire histories exist before Jack or Robby even enters the other's picture.
And then suddenly they meet, and it changes the entire cartography of their lives.
That’s what gets me about them. Not that they were always destined to be together or that they're bound to one another because they've known each other for decades, but because of the fact that, after the tragedy has come and gone, they still have one another to look forward to, even though they don't know it. Jack, who has every reason in the world to retreat into himself, will still allow Robby close. The fact that Robby, who carries so much grief and self-recrimination, will still let himself be softened by Jack anyway.
There’s something profoundly hopeful to me about the idea that your life can crack you open fifty different ways and love can still arrive afterwards. That desolation is not the end state of a person. That love does not become less meaningful because it came later; if anything, I think it becomes more meaningful, because they know exactly what it costs to keep living long enough to reach it.
not to be talking about avengers (2012) in the current year (2025) but tony stark walking into a room full of spies and government agents, planting a hacking device on one of their computers, starting up a little hacking program on a giant screen in full view of everyone present, and then exiting WITH NO ONE NOTICING simply because he is THAT good at misdirection and running his mouth. what the fuck. icon legend media trained at the Maria Stark Public Appearances Bootcamp at age 4 guy who crowd worked his way out of a senate hearing they do not make them like this anymore
i really love the way jack and robby worry about each other, because the way they both express it is so completely in character for both of them and manages to build so much history between them with very little exposition.
jack seems to understand how far is too far with robby intrinsically, that if he wants to get past robby's own stubbornness he needs to tread lightly. jack doesn't push with robby until he has to, until there is no choice, until robby has forced his hand and he's out on the ledge a little too close to the edge. before that it's soft, non-confrontational offers of implied care, not 'don't go' but 'go, but call me if it gets dark', it's watching him to figure out where his heads at and knowing when to tell him to take a break or to keep him busy, it's checking on him but never directly, it's sticking close and keeping him level. until all of that fails. the direct confrontation is always plan c, the break-glass-in-case-of-emergencies option, the one that always feels a little off-kilter because jack's never really ready for it, but once he's there it's direct in your face rambling mixed metaphors about bees and the beauty of life, it's eye contact and physical touch and telling robby to his face that he is good and cared for and that nothing his head is telling him is true, that he didn't break and even if he did it doesn't matter, that the hospital needs him, that he needs to come back.
meanwhile robby never worries about jack out loud and certainly never to his face. he holds the worry close to his chest, and he just tries to fix it. he talks jack off the ledge but he doesn't face the why head on. instead he's passive aggressive about his worry, joking about nightmares and suicidal tendencies and oh so casually patting jack's bullet wound (that jack didn't tell him about, mind you). it's not till he's frustrated with jack, till he's cornered and his emotions have no where to go but out, that it spills out of him and then suddenly all the things he's tucked away are out in the open. he can't help it, because it's always been there, and yeah jack, getting shot at by choice is fucked up, and yeah jack, you are also working yourself to death and i've noticed these things about you too okay? robby is so quick to volley back, it's almost instant and sure, part of it is robby being an asshole to get jack to leave it alone, but it's also so close to the surface robby doesn't have to reach for them. kind of a "you're a hypocrite, because i'm worried about you too but you don't see me bugging you about it".
it is just so clear they know each other well enough to anticipate each other and have such clearcut ways they handle one another. dana tells robby that abbot had a rough shift is getting air, robby knows he's on the roof and goes to get him. dana tells jack robby isn't doing well, so he watches robby like an apex predator to confirm it with his own eyes, and after he knows, jack tries to ground him in the work by pulling him into cases he thinks will show robby how essential he is.
their dynamic is just so endlessly fascinating because there is just so much lurking beneath the surface and every crumb we get just makes me more and more curious about their history 👀
don't even get me started on the emergency contact of it all, oh man
the art of the (not) touch
you know what is so funny about this picture? Both of these bitches are going THROUGH IT one of them is actively suicidal and the other has a scalpel in her pocket. and yet they stay silly.
