Fun fact:  The rate of forcible rape has actually declined dramatically since 1979–by OVER 80% (in fact, ALL violent crime has dropped dramatically in only the past two decades).  Here–have yet another source on this decline.  And, mind you, this is while the willingness of victims and others in reporting instances of rape has actually increased.  The “statistic” being passed around regarding rape is not only false, but completely and utterly outlandish.  The woman who conducted the original surveys the “1 in 4” nonsense came from did so with a very extreme bias, and disregarded the actual feelings of the women she questioned.  Not only were consensual one-night-stands that the subjects later regretted considered to be “rape”, but this article notes that even a kiss was classified as “sexual assault”.   Interesting how the decline in rape coincides with the increased availability of pornography that came with the wider distribution of home video devices.

As for whether or not pornography has any kind of negative psychological impact that contributes to the creation of rapists, let’s examine the idea scientifically.  Acts of violence (including sex crimes) are not a product of any singular aspect of our culture - they are a product of a lack of function in the brain, particularly the pre-frontal cortex.  No amount of pornography is going to damage a person’s brain. You could bombard a man with violent imagery of rape and murder, but mere image and suggestion is not going to disable the functioning of the pre-frontal cortex.  This area of the brain is responsible for controlling our impulses.  For most human beings, this keeps us from acting out against what we’ve learned to be the appropriate behavior in our society. Time and again,  science has shown us that the brains of violent criminals are not the same as those of the average person. 

The people that commit rape lack the empathy to connect with their actions towards others. They are more than likely already well aware that what they’re doing is wrong.  They simply do not have that little voice in the back of their head that tells them not to actually do it.  What they AREN’T, however, is a product of watching pornography.  The kind of people with the capability to commit rape are not going to be dissuaded from doing so if they’re separated from viewing pornography. 

On top of the differences found in the brains of convicted criminals, there is also the fact that male and female brains are not wired the same.  There is a part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres  (the corpus callosum) that is smaller in boys than in girls.  Now, studies have frequently shown that violent criminals are also usually the products of broken homes, and childhood abuse.  Such abuse actually reduces that part of the brain even further in boys, while such an effect is not shown to occur in girls that endure abuse at a young age.  It is this part of the brain that effects how they cope with stress and trauma at their earliest points in life. 

Violent criminals are not manufactured by pornography, or even by society.  They are manufactured by THEIR OWN, PERSONAL HISTORY AND BIOLOGY, and–like it or not–there’s not a lot that can be done to prevent such damaged individuals from being created.  

There will always exist circumstances under which future criminals can be manufactured, because no matter how advanced we are, and no matter what higher levels of existence we attain, there will always be bad homes, and bad parents.

The higher level of normality the situation has, the more likely we are to deny or justify other peoples assualt, or the innapropriate reaction from the people who witnessed it.

Children In Tears As Audio from a Porn Movie Plays Over Target PA System

A routine errand got rather inappropriate for customers who visited supermarket store Target in San Jose, California on Thursday, when audio from an adult film started playing over the PA system.

One mom, who was shopping with her 3-year-old twins, recorded the incident and shared the video with NBC.

Gina Young says when the audio started playing, her twins started crying and she asked herself, “What is going on at Target right now?”

In a Facebook post, Young details how other customers tried to help with her children and how Target employees responded.

“People offered to help me cover my twins ears. Others threw [their] stuff down and walked out. Employees were running around everywhere. Picking and hanging up phones, which worked … for about two minutes before it started up again.”

She adds, “People were screaming at employees, video taping, some laughing some disgusted. It was terribly awkward.”

According to NBC, the shopping center where the Target is located was hosting “mommy and me” day, making for huge crowds and a packed store when the audio started.

Another shopper, Bethany Curran, said that the audio – reportedly filled with racist and sexist language – continued in every aisle for about 15 minutes.

“I just kept looking around and seeing all these employees laughing, getting their phones out, not doing much,” Curran said.

A Target spokesperson tells PEOPLE in a statement that complaining customers received an apology and the incident is being investigated “to better understand what happened and to help ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

When porn has to move beyond physical degradation.

In our society, women with mental health issues and trauma are frequently sexualized because of the perceived vulnerability and powerlessness that we associate with mental illness(in women). The reality of course is different, which is that mental health problems and trauma are experienced in a multitude of ways.

In pornography–similar to youth–mental illness is sexualized and depicted as something that makes some easier to take advantage of and control. What is even more sinister is that mental illness is also used as something to further mock and degrade women. Think of the mental health issues that our society often associates with women–eating disorders, panic attacks… “daddy issues”–which is a disgusting term to begin with, but the way it’s sexualized is even worse. 

Below are a couple examples of the sexualized misery seen in porn. Porn is all about encouraging people to get off on the suffering of women.

Children In Tears As Audio from a Porn Movie Plays Over Target PA System

It went on for 15 minutes

A routine errand got rather inappropriate for customers who visited supermarket store Target in San Jose, California on Thursday, when audio from an adult film started playing over the PA system.

One mom, who was shopping with her 3-year-old twins, recorded the incident and shared the video with NBC.

Gina Young says when the audio started playing, her twins started crying and she asked herself, “What is going on at Target right now?”

In a Facebook post, Young details how other customers tried to help with her children and how Target employees responded.

“People offered to help me cover my twins ears. Others threw [their] stuff down and walked out. Employees were running around everywhere. Picking and hanging up phones, which worked … for about two minutes before it started up again.”

She adds, “People were screaming at employees, video taping, some laughing some disgusted. It was terribly awkward.”

According to NBC, the shopping center where the Target is located was hosting “mommy and me” day, making for huge crowds and a packed store when the audio started.

Another shopper, Bethany Curran, said that the audio – reportedly filled with racist and sexist language – continued in every aisle for about 15 minutes.

“I just kept looking around and seeing all these employees laughing, getting their phones out, not doing much,” Curran said.

A Target spokesperson tells PEOPLE in a statement that complaining customers received an apology and the incident is being investigated “to better understand what happened and to help ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

You can't combat the porn industry with female pornographers: A Lesson In Patriarchal Pressure & Porn Culture

Women producing porn does not stop the industry from being violently patriarchal, (x), (x), (x),  just like how having feminist women in the economic upper echelons of society does not stop said society from being capitalist.

To focus on the porn industry’s tendency to enact and reenact into innumerable oblivion rape and abuse as a selling point for their content even through female pornographers (Who are elevated by pro-porn liberal feminists as evidence that the porn industry is not misogynistic and male-dominated) means also addressing the myth that everything a woman does is feminist.

To debunk this myth in context of porn culture (the frontier in which straight, male determined standards of sexuality is imposed upon themselves and others, such as non-dominant oppressed groups, in a way that functions to uphold white, straight, male privilege. For further details on this specific argument, research pornographic racist tropes and pornographic racist caricatures of people of color - for example - “the demonization of black sexuality”(1),“the demonization of black sexuality”(2), as well as the fetishization/sexualization of slavery and representations of sexualized violence, male dominance and male violence in pornography). This post will be analyzing specifically how a female presence in pornography does not actually detract from pornography’s misogynistic, abusive state (both in acts committed vs. acts depicted, although this dichotomy is not entirely applicable because depictions of say, rape is sometimes actual documentation of the act of rape being committed, if accounts from former porn performers is to be taken into consideration - which they should be).

The research source for this argument comes from the PhD. Department of Psychology University of Rhode Island Chafee, featuring researchers Chyng Sun, Ana Bridges, Robert Wosnitzer, Erica Scharrer, and Rachael Liberman. Their research reveals that:

“Commercially successful female pornographers…appear to have learned the tropes and conventions from male pornographers. Perhaps confined by the industry’s formulas and market pressure (Taormino, 2006) and informed by their own sexual proclivity (Angel, 2006), these female directors have created a pornographic world that is remarkably similar to that of their male counterparts. Furthermore, while working in male dominated fields, some women would display hyper-masculinity to earn respect and gain favor from their male supervisors and peers (Wong, Kettlewell, & Sproule, 1985). This phenomenon may help explain why women directors depicted significantly more female to female aggression- how best to demonstrate one’s allegiance to masculinity when one denies one’s female gender solidarity and can violate another woman even more severe than a man can do. It is also important to note that this current study does not claim that our sampled female directed pornographic videos are representative of all female directors’ pornographic work. We simply demonstrate that in a capitalist economy, when the consumer base of pornography is mostly men whose sexual imaginations are shaped in an arguably male dominant society and one wants to become popular and mainstream in order to maximize profits, the gender of the creator may be irrelevant.”- (x)

Women in pornography does not stop pornography from being patriarchal. There is pressure in the industry to sell-out because what is being demanded from the male dominated consumer base is material that feeds into male sadism and male dominance over women. In order to be successful in the porn industry or specifically in order to gain recognition from the men who run the industry, replicating the violent, hyper-masculine model of sex is the route to go.

The one noted difference researchers were able to distinguish between male pornographers vs. female pornographers is that female pornographers feature more representations of women as perpetrators of violence especially against other women (which feeds into the male gaze-centric/androcentric pornographic representation of [faux] lesbianism: in which “lesbian” pornography is made with primarily a straight male consumer base in mind).

“When examining aggression in female- and male- directed scenes, verbal and physical aggression rates were similar except that female directors were significantly more likely to show women as perpetrators of aggression, most of which violent actions were directed against other women.

Regardless of director gender, women were overwhelmingly the targets of aggressive acts and almost always showed pleasure or indifference towards aggression.

We suspected the differences between female and male directors’ depictions of sexual acts and aggression may be due to female directors including significantly more female characters in each scene, so we hold the ratio of female vs male characters constant. Almost all the differences disappear but female directors still depict significant female to female violence than their male counterparts.

Contrary to the hope and idealism among some pro-pornography scholars and activists who assumed and predicted that female directors would produce more sensual, egalitarian and “women-centered” pornography, the study at hand found that directors of the top-renting videos depicted a pornographic world in which some of the women, like most of the men in such films, are aggressive and dominant; moreover, the majority of the women are portrayed as masochists who actually enjoy the degradation and violence that is inflicted on them.

This message is particularly illuminating when women are aggressing against one another without any males around to do the dirty work. Evidently, the ideals of some female pornographers, such as Candida Royalle, who are celebrated by pro-pornography scholars and are awarded for making “feminist” pornography (Agrell, 2006), have not been effective in changing popular mainstream pornography toward less misogyny.“ - (x)
