i don’t think anyone fully understands how iconic of a film the princess diaries truly is. everything in that film is iconic. the apartment/firehouse. the scooters as a method of transportation. “get off the grass” in 4 languages. “please don’t crush my soy nuts.” the mustang. the weird neighbor who writes poetry. the m&ms on the keyboard and the pizza. “it’s a wango?” lily’s otter backpack. the whole paolo makeover sequence. every foot pop. stop me i could go on forever the princess diaries is so iconic it’s on the same level of iconography as star wars (1977)

Remember and know that the inaccessibility of Pride events is not your fault and should not be made to be your responsibility. You deserve to have event organizers consider disabled, chronically and mentally ill community members with priority and care. You deserve to not have to advocate for your inclusion at every turn. You deserve to be understood. You deserve to be able to connect with others who share your experiences.
God said “i love lgbt jewish people n muslims” because the first day of pride is both laylat al-qadr and shabbat can i get a mashallah

do u guys understand how creepy the pledge of allegiance is though like every day when ur a kid everybody just chants how great america is every morning it’s creepy
You do that every morning???
EVERY MORNING.
wait
wait
is this a real thing i thought that was just in the simpsons
Wait, other countries don’t do this.
*whispers* Not even Russia
I remember when my dad had a conversation with me
because I asked him what the Austrian pledge of allegiance was (because he’s from Austria)
and he said “we don’t have a pledge of allegiance”
and I said “why not?”
“honey, think about what training your children to mindlessly pledge to a flag, without really knowing what they’re talking about, sounds like to Austrians”
“oh. hitler.”
“exactly”
RE FUCKING TWEET
you literally don’t have to say it though
you can just sit your little self down or eyeroll the whole time and a common thing is for people to say it wrong or replace it with other shit for shits and giggles
only as a result of a fuckton of lawsuits where children didn’t say it and got punished, and even those only legislate that it’s legal to not say it, whereas actual schools label you a “problem child” or try to sic classmates on you and so on
You aren’t told you can opt out, even though you can and I eventually did. You are told to say the pledge, and it sounds like any other teacher order and there’s no sign that it’s less authoritative than when you’re told to line up to go to lunch.
I’ve been on the internet a heck of a long time and yet somehow I haven’t truly grasped the pledge of allegiance thing on an emotional gut level, it still sounds fake, I don’t think I’d really internalise it unless I sat in on a classroom for a day or something.
@ these people going “you don’t HAAAVE to say it”… I got yelled at by two teachers and kicked out of school for a week
Yeah. When I was a kid I stopped saying it for a really long time in middle school. I was a little shit back then too, and after my parents did the “We are Jewish and now I think you are old enough for us to tell you about the reason why we cannot answer questions about any grandparents past your mother’s great grandma (hint, it was the Holocaust)” talk, I stopped saying the pledge because I learned that the US refused a ship of Jewish refugees.
My teachers all yelled at me when I refused to stand. One sent me to the office. The Principal told me that technically he couldn’t punish me, but gave me a lecture about disrespect. I started standing again- until high school when the real wave of “fuck this and fuck you” hit.
But yeah. They don’t tell you that you don’t have to stand, they will still yell at and berate you if you don’t stand and say it, and it is frankly a horrifying thing that we pledge ourselves to a scrap of fabric and a country every single fucking day.
characters that serve as externalizations of all your trauma and flaws and problems are all well and good but rebuilt confident characters that are the sort of person you want to be/would be if you were healthier and more secure in yourself are rad as well bc you will love them and have to get into their head to write them and if you genuinely aspire to self-improvement they will rub off you
in my personal experience, at least, it was never enough to simply torment my characters, and let them wallow in that misery - it can provide catharsis, this is true, but it’s a relief that often proves temporary. the bad feelings are let out in that moment, but inevitably, i’d have to go back and do it again. there’s nothing wrong with vent art, but that is what it is - the blowing off of steam that’s built up, and still has a source inside.
i started to get real catharsis, lasting catharsis, when i decided it was less about projecting my pains onto these characters, and more about having them bounce back in the ways i wish i could have, to keep going on being awesome heroes despite the hell they went through, or were still going through. and to write that, i had to sit down, and think how they would think, puzzle the motivation they needed to do this, to achieve this, how they would get themselves to do this. and in time, i became more able to emulate the same tenacity i gave to them. and that is some good shit right there.

little folklore things
in some english folklore there is a belief that the first soul buried in a new burying ground will be tasked to haunt the cemetery forever helping souls move on to heaven and help them to avoid the devil and witches, to avoid this fate there is some customs of burying a dog or some other animal in a new cemetery, it is called a church grim, and unlike other black dogs, which are often harbingers of death, it is a benevolent spirit meanwhile in scottish folklore there is the belief that a person will haunt a cemetery until another is buried there to take their place and so on
in breton folklore it’s believed that if you find yourself on the sea on halloween or all soul’s day that the spirits of the dead lost at sea will try and call your name to get you to carry them back to land so they can be put to rest properly
among the numerous beliefs of the origins of the selkies, one in shetland and orcadian tradtion is that selkies are the souls of drowned sailors who can return to human form once a year to visit their families
it is believed that the seventh son of a seventh son (or seventh daughter of a seventh daughter) who has red hair will be born with the sight to see the fairies
it is believed unwise to wear too much green as it is a fairy colour and might attract them to you
that’s all i got for now, feel free to add ur own fave little folklore things
if your hem is turned up, kiss it and make a wish before you fix it (Appalachian, my mom taught me this one)
if you walk backwards up stairs on Halloween in the dark holding a candle and looking over your shoulder with a mirror, you’ll see your future spouse’s face in the mirror (Victorian, origin uncertain)
counting crows/magpies/ravens/jackdaws/blue jays:
1 for sorrow
2 for mirth
3 for a wedding
4 for a birth
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for secrets never told
(there are many variations on this; I believe it comes from England?)
A hag stone is a stone with a natural hole in it. It’s said that looking through the hole in a hag stone let’s you see into other worlds. It’s also said that looking through a hag stone will let you see through glamour and see the truth. They’re also called adder stones, witch stones, and serpent’s eggs. I used to collect these when I was a child. You can find them along the beaches or riverbanks, as the water will often bore a hole through a smooth stone. A cat sneezing is lucky for brides. I’ve never been aware of an explanation for this though. While in British folkloric tradition mermaids are often seen as unlucky and bringing disaster, in the Caribbean they grant wishes to sailors. A penanggalan is a ghost/vampire native to the Malay peninsula. They are vampiric creatures with a women’s head, detached from their bodies, and trailing their entrails as they fly. Tradition generally states that they were once beautiful women who either does from child birth, made a pact with the devil, or were cursed for using black magic. Similar to the Filipino manananggal, although the Filipino versions can be either male or female, whereas the penanggalan are always female. You can escape one by scattering thorny leaves from a specific plant and protecting your house with these plants as well. Penanggalan can appear as normal, usually very beautiful, women during the daytime. Because of their association with women who died in child birth there are a lot of stories of them working as midwives, who might later feed on the mother or come for the child when it is born. You can defeat them by either waiting for the head to detach from the body and filling the empty neck with glass or by destroying the body. There is also a more humorous way to identify a penanggalan by flipping the body over so that the head will reattach backwards in the mornings.
