An eventful day! Location scouting in Atlanta.
What had happened was: We were location scouting and got turned around. Pulled off a main road onto a residential street in front of a house to check the map on my phone. Took maybe 5 to 7 minutes to locate where we wanted to be, and drove the street to turn around, and not in someones driveway. Turned around and went up the street. As we were back in front of the house we were previously, we noticed people wearing police on their chests, so we slowed down. One officer was flagging us forward more, and one flagging us to stop. So we stopped, and put our hands where they can be seen. A female officer approached me and asked me to put the car in park and turn it off. She then asked what we were doing at this house. We both replied that we were not there for the house, we were simply looking at a map to get where we're looking for. Then, she asked what we were looking for. We quickly explained what we were looking for. (A location for an upcoming photo session with a band, and we're looking for an urban area with the right character for the image we need to portray) She then replied "I ain't buying it!" I wanted to reply "well, thats good, cause I ain't selling it!" But did not see it fit seeing the circumstances and all. She asked, why do you look nervous if we were doing no wrong? That's just not something easily explained when you have officers surrounding your car, READY! At this time, an officer approached Emerson and asked him to put his hands on the dash. Then, immediately asked him to step out of the car. Emerson's seatbelt was on and asked the officer if he can remove it or if he wants to remove it. The officer was reaching in to remove his belt then stepped back and said "You remove it." The officer asked him to put his hands on his head and step towards him, then "patted" him down. As Emerson was being dealt with, I was continually interrogated on what we we're looking for. As the story never changed, she asked me to get out of the car, and here is where things may have gotten tricky! I then acknowledged that their is a firearm in the car and where it is located. Another officer came up behind me and asked me to step aside with him, then asked if he could "patt" me down and if they can search the car. At this time, I looked around and seen at least 6 or 7 plain cars that weren't there a few seconds ago and at least a dozen or so officers. I went ahead and gave up my right, and let them search. Whatever was going on here, we wanted and needed no part of, and wanted to be on our way ASAP! I am not sure what happened with Emerson while I was being dealt with. I kept getting interrogated, and never changed my mind on what we are looking for. We were asked to sit down on the curb as they ripped through our belongings and the car, interrogated more and more. "Why are you so nervous, where we live, who do you live with. What we are looking for, roll down your pant legs, do you know who's car this is (red car sitting in front of the house), what were we looking for, your not going to find what you are looking for around here, I have been doing this 25 years, and I ain't buying it, etc....." I was asked to step aside with an officer who then asked me some questions, how I know Emerson, how long have I known him and why I know him. Then asked to explain why I am there. I continued to tell the same story. He then asked me to go back and join him. (Emerson on the curb) They took our information and photographed them with "the phone." Surely they will dig into our lives. So, then we confirmed what we were looking for, and they confirmed we can't find it around there, and undetained us. My guess, we pulled in front of a house the FED's are selling drugs out of, or they have been planning a bust, and thought they had someone possibly connected (probable cause), or being busted. Officers were crawling all over that house. They were checking the windows with crowbars and others in through the front door. I mean, we have all seen this kind of stuff on cops! I can see how suspicious it may seem for a caucasian man and a black man with dreads, riding in the same car, pull in front of a house under surveillance known for drug activity by the FED's looks. Only they know why they detained us. We can only suspect! I am thankful that things were finally understood (or not), and nothing bad happened to us. It could have ended completely differently! End of the day, who else can say they had a run-in with ATF, DEA, Department of Justice and Atlanta PD all in the same day? These two, thats who! Guess that one can come off the bucket now!
