Nope. All animals take time to form a bond. Before modern medicine even people sometimes wouldn’t even name their babies until they were a year old because infant mortality was so insanely high and emotional investment was risky. Take a calf away from a cow within a half hour she won’t remember she even calved, even if it’s a beef cow. Often animals will just walk away from weak offspring because they aren’t worth the investment according to their instincts. Bonding isn’t instant or automatic.

Aren’t Quokkas and Kangaroos basically infamous for throwing their babies at predators so that they have a chance at saving their own skins? Bear moms will just fucking abandon one or more of her cubs if she happens to have too many at a time. Pretty sure that harp seal moms just up and abandon their pups after two weeks or so, leaving them to starve on the shore while they fuck off to find a new mate.

And that’s all without even touching on the numerous mammalian examples of filial cannibalism. 

To say that non-human mothers “love” their offspring is nothing more than anthropomorphism on its most naive level. The fact that so many anti-animal ag folks base their entire argument on this kind of nonsense is exactly why no one takes them seriously.

I don’t understand why veg*ns think that they’re proving something by saying ‘you won’t eat a dog’, when some people (including me), would eat dog meat. I still oppose the ‘dog meat festival’ in China due to the horrible conditions the dogs are kept in, not because they are eating dogs. The only reason most people don’t eat dog is because dogs are useful in other ways and because we have an emotional attachment to them. Most people don’t eat sheep because they produce useful wool.

This is not exactly relevant to the article, but you have to see the scene late in the film where John Hume (the rhino breeder) is talking to Born Free Foundation about legalizing rhino horn trade.

It is hair-tearingly frustrating.

Animal rights activists - who I still like to call “anti-animal”, because they have only heart for animals, but they don’t want to do anything to actually help them.

They are against zoos, they are against breeding, they are against conservation-based legal hunting, they are against everything which involves the animals being touched or handled or “exploited” by humans in any way.

That is impossible. That is not the world we live in. In today’s modern world, the only way to solve an issue is to find a way for people to make big money on a solution. The only way.

They are even, as that meeting showed, against animals being kept in huge, open-range farms, to have the horn removed painlessly every two years, even if that will save the species.

It’s the “no, not that” meme.

Animal rights: We have to save the animals!

Zoos: We can breed them in zoological institutions to keep a gene pool for future release, and raise money through zoos to help wild populations.

AR: No, not that.

Hunters: We can let hunters spend insane amounts of money to hunt a select few animals that are no longer breeding, and let the money go back to buying more land for animals, and funding anti-poaching.

AR: No, not that.

Hume: We can mass-produce rhinos in vast, natural landscapes, harvest the horns painlessly and keep the animals alive, selling the horns for millions of dollars, which will keep the rhino alive.

AR: No, not that.

Zoos, hunters, and Hume: THEN WHAT DO YOU WANT?! Suggest SOMETHING that will actually make a difference!

AR: *Crickets*

They are all about feels, hugs and talk, and meanwhile, they will love these animals to extinction, by banning everything that has a snowball’s chance in hell at saving them.

My understanding is that they still think it's exploiting the animal. Even though the eggs get made regardless of eating them. And the hens only care about taking them if they're broody. They also think it will cause more egg laying hens to be produced, and so, cause harm to things like male chicks.

Additionally, most carnivores will not go for domestic cattle bc they're not as nutritious compared to wild prey. Most zoos don't feed their big cats beef except as a treat bc it's considered junk food. If a predator does it's because they're starving and desperate for food. So those ranchers are just full of shit and looking for an excuse.

Predators do kill and eat livestock. Wolves and cougars kill cattle. The only reason they don't do it more is because people to measures to protect their animals. And adult cattle are too large for some cougars and small wolf packs. But they sure as shit still try to hunt them and often kill the calves.

-say animal welfare doesn’t matter in agriculture

-say the way an animal was raised doesn’t matter if they later die, regardless of how they die

-want domesticated species to go extinct

-think domesticated or tamed animals should be released into the wild

-oppose zoos and their conservation programs, regardless of the treatment of their animals

-force your carvinorous pets to be vegan or support others who do

-support PETA, who routinely kill healthy, adoptable animals

saw some vegan on twitter claiming that keeping ur dog outside is animal abuse. thoughts?

Depends a lot on the situation. Unless the dog's needs aren't being met I wouldn't call it abuse. But working dogs, like guardian dogs, herding, or sled dogs can live outside 24/7 until the day they die and be totally happy. I'm fine with that. But throwing a pet outside and only throwing food at it twice a day seems like a shitty life. Still not abuse. Just neglect. I didn't get why people own dogs just to feed them.

I get that y'all are against trophy hunting and all but you have to realize that its typically the biggest source of revenue for most conservation areas and genuinely helps keep other animals safe. Yes its sad but in capatilistic areas, its necesssary in a lot of countries, including the US, to financially support what their governments wont fund

The issue with the duct tape is that it will hurt when it gets removed and the dog can't regulate it's temp by panting, eat or drink. It was left unsupervised in a garage like that. A muzzle would be a closer comparison to a flash. I'm sure if someone duct taped their horse's mouth shut and left them unattended people would be pissed. But the horse just has a strip of leather on his face while being ridden. It will come off when they're done. Chances are the horse won't have the option to eat or drink during the ride anyway so it really isn't missing out.

- ha no. Turkeys want murder not pets. If they let you pet them they're trying to lower your guard. Run.

- They just want food.

- That isn't a good reason to trust them. Conservative Republicans also have a variety of personalities. But yet they still all suck.

- Wild turkeys can like up to 10 years. Broiler turkeys don't. Selective breeding has made them grow similar to broiler chickens.
