It started off innocently enough.

John would travel to the beach every morning– the small secluded offshoot that no one else seemed to bother with, preferring the long stretch of clean sand about a mile down the shore– after his mother had passed away, scanning the horizon, the gentle waves, for…

Well, he wasn’t sure what exactly. All he knew was that the dark chasm in his heart felt almost unbearable sitting at home while his father oscillated between mourning and overcompensating with his work, so he sought refuge in the one place that had always been there for him. The gentle waves that he and his mother used to splash around in when he was just a child. The one place where he was allowed to just be, despite all of life’s expectations.

His father never came down here anymore, but John didn’t mind. In fact, it was assurance that his reflecting wouldn’t be interrupted by the sharp stab of guilt he always felt when he saw the pain in his father’s eyes. Convinced he wasn’t doing enough.

One day, while he was staring out into the distant waters, he noticed something staring back.
