another scene from pez dispenser debris by thepolysyndetonaddictsupportgroup
this is... probably too long for this blog, but the whole scene is HILARIOUS and it JUST KEEPS GOING
Fave of course is Uraraka's saying with utter disgust "You two know nothing about breaking the law."
pez dispenser debris by thepolysyndetonaddictsupportgroup is one of my new favorite fics in this fandom for several reasons, but this headcanon about All Might's relationships with America is alone enough to cement it's place near and dear to my heart

I donāt know much about xianxia or wuxia but am in LOVE with these tags š
fic link ā n.b. this oneās rated E. Iāve read the first few chapters and found the characters quite compelling, have been meaning to get back to it!
update: I read the whole fic sometime over the past 1.5 years and it absolutely SLAPS. Maybe i'll go back and post quotes from it.
"almost no raccoons" is a much funnier tag than simply "Raccoons", it really paints a picture

Chapter 1: a great, complete one-shot.

English and English-adjacent people -
How is "Dorchester" pronounced? Does it rhyme with Worchester? And if not -
why not???
"Dorchester", I'm sorry to say, is just pronounced "daw-chester" (or "door-chester" - I pronounce those things the same way, don't know if you would).
Gloucester is "gloster"
Worcester is "wuhster"
Bicester is "bister"
Leicester is "lester"
Towcester is "toaster"
I think the -chesters and -casters are more likely to be pronounced in full than the -cesters. But there's Cirencester which is pronounced "siren-sester". Maybe that's just because "sirenster" is actually quite hard to say?
I full-on wasn't realizing that the -cesters and -chesters were different (as you can see from how I misspelled Worcester and Gloucester).
Are the -cesters, -chesters and -casters regionally disjunctive? They look like they must have the same etymological source. Maybe the -cester dialect underwent reduction and the others didn't?
I wonder if it's significant that in Cirencester the first element is bisyllabic instead if monosyllabic
They're 100% all from Latin castrum (for army camp). But I'm as interested in learning why there are three different versions as you are.
Ah ha! I knew it ought to be something like that!
Wikipedia has this hard-to-read map of the distribution:
The -cesters are all in the West Midlands, more-or-less.
Wikipedia also claims that "The pronunciation of names ending inĀ -chesterĀ orĀ -casterĀ is regular" but that's not entirely true, some people pronounce Godmanchester as 'Gumster', though that pronunciation is dying out.
So -xeter in Exeter and Wroxeter is the same root? FASCINATING.
Hang on though Exeter is on the River Exe, I assumed that's where it got its name
I wonder if it's significant that in Cirencester the first element is bisyllabic instead if monosyllabic
Cirencester also used to be super ellided but the spelling pronunciation gained favor in the early 20th century: see here (and previous comments).
I'm not an expert, but given that we have two clear examples of pronunciation shift in the past 100 years I wouldn't assume that current pronunciation reflects historical etymological or linguistic differences.
map
Link to source page of the wikipedia map -- it's easier to read when you can mouse over to highlight town names. Also it has a key:
interested in learning why there are three different versions as you are.
@marietheran the red dots kindof line up with Norse dialects in England in this map ("in the tenth century") -- but I can find other maps of the Danelaw or Danish Mercia/Viking settlements that don't line up.
The blue cluster might line up with Mercia/Mercian dialect of Old English? Again, not entirely, the "East of England" (that's what wikipedia calls it??) area with only green dots would also have been Mercian according to the map in the last link. But maybe some sort Mercian heartland/the spelling conventions held on longer in the west??? Other people in this thread know more about Old English than I do maybe they can say if this hypothesis makes any sense.
we're all right there with you, Iroh

and i think to myself
what a wonderful world
(since saving this to drafts a few months ago, I have since tracked down the fic and honestly? It's a hoot)
bonus comment from Iny on discord:
yeah, if Star Wars universe had Splinkedin (Space LinkedIn) that's exactly how Anakin would post on it lol.
fic is the incredible ForTheRepublic.mp4 by lesbianpadme, which is basically the James Somerton scandal transposed to the Star Wars universe: Spacebomberguy publishes a video expose revealing that Palpatine is Darth Sidious.
ID: Screenshot of the notes section from AO3, which says: if you pay attention to all my carefully planned foreshadowing, you may be able to tell I had no idea where I was going with this story the entire time. End ID.
just saw a āonly one bedā fic with the major character death warning
#i guess thatās one way to solve that problem
āThis bed aināt big enough for the both of us.ā
I donāt really read in this fandom, but I really think Gintama fics tend to have the most fun titles ā probably fic authors are inspired to live up to the episode names!
One of my favorite titles of a Gintama fic (And a good fic too) is
Serious Question (Time-Sensitive): Should You Still Trust Your Gut If Thereās A Sword Stuck In It?
I Can't Believe This Isn't Already A Gintama Episode Title
