During the reign of Alexander II, while Finland was still a duchy of Russia, the tzar elevated Finnish to a national (or, at least, duchy-wide) language, equal to Swedish. He did this to decrease Finns' cultural ties to Sweden and therefore weaken the still-strong Swedish influence in the region. There have been some great fics here that have addressed the language shift as a sign of Finland's increased autonomy. THEREFORE, it is obvious that we need to have grateful! but culturallyindependent!Finland and smug!(sane! ...?)Russia getting together and making with the lovings, with jealous!Sweden hanging out at the edges. Or possibly even Sweden/Finland/Russia. Yes?
